It may vary from doctor to doctor, but how soon can one swim in the ocean after SRS? I had my surgery on February 21st and was planning a trip to Maine in August. I am meeting Dr. Brassard on Monday (June 20th), but would appreciate receiving info from other sources.
Thanks

Frances, I would think you should be fine by now. Dr. Bowers recommends no swimming until post op 6 weeks, but that is a pool.

I don't know (pre-op), but I will send a msg to my soon-to-be surgeon. When I get a response, I'll pass it on here.

I wanted to know anyway, as I love to swim ! Especially in Maine ;)

i am not a Dr and did not stay in a Holiday in last night.
but i would think the worst part of post surgery would be for the mussels inside to heal up right, as the skin works like magic and seals up very fast.
after a lower belly surgery, (different item) my Dr had me doing nothing for two months, so inside would heal right. but after six or more months most all would be good, just take it slow and easy at first.
but yes talk to your Dr before doing any real hard endurance swimming. aka:just play around in the shallow end for now.

i had surgery last year Frances and Dr Meltzer told me i could swim in the ocean whenever I wanted too.. I had surgery last June and spent the week at a shore town in New Jersey one month later.

I would think that as long as you are healed (no open wounds) and have regained your strength it would be ok. Keep in mind that there may be riptides that will make you work harder than in a pool. Please do ask your doctor because I would like to know his answer.

I do not intend on swimming in the ocean as much as body surfing. I spent every summer of my life in southern Maine until the age of 25 and I would like to go back. I like to ride the waves over and over again. I can do it all day. I guess I want to know if the force of the wave (or the salt or the sand) is dangerous, and if the waves will force things into me that may cause problems. I have been fine since my post-surgical infection was treated, but I had a little blood this morning on my first two dilators. I miss the ocean so much!

Swimming in salt water should be perfectly OK. Vigorous exercise may be a different matter. I was climbing on the roof in October, four months after my surgery. But it was not comfortable. I would talk to Brassard. I am going for a F/U appointment on 27 June. If I can remember, I will ask him. I'll call you when I get to Montreal, hon. Maybe we can get together.

Lovies,
S

And if you get to Maine and don't call Maureen, she will be PO'd.

Frances, Being an island girl I find that salt water heals nearly everything!! Wounds to poison ivy the sea salt is very disinfectant
tends to dry the skin abit though!

FYI Bowers recommends epsom salt baths during healing to cleanse and draw blood flow to the area. So salt may not be bad...

You mean we won't sink with that "extra" hole? :)

Sorry if I offend, it is not my intention...

Unless you intend on skinny dipp'n, I do not think that much sand will get where it should not ;) I too adore swiming in Maine, my experiences were as an adult, in waaaaaaayyyy northern Maine (about 45 min from Calais on the coast). SUCH a beautiful and peaceful place !

Brassard was also my doctor. I suggest just following what ever he tells you. Each of us is different so only he will know what is ok for you. I have gone swimming in a pool after about six months and had no effect. Except that my suit fit better then before surgery. I don't know about in the surf.

It's so funny to hear people talking about my backyard. I live about 12 minutes from one of the more popular beaches with the Quebec crowd. I adore body surfing but the "brisk" water is starting to bother my joints. I've actually wimped out a few times and worn a short surfing suit. If your worried about any body issues you might consider one of those. It pretty much seals your body away from the water.

If you feel like dancing some night and don't feel like Ogunquit give me a PM and you could try my group in Manchester,NH.

Either way, enjoy Maine. The Way Life Should Be.
