I said I wouldn't post one of these again until after I came out to my oldest son. I traveled from Seattle to Fort Bragg to let him know. He has been in the Army for a year and a half and recently got married (6 months ago). He also found out his wife is 6 weeks pregnant last week. Needless to say, he Has a lot going on.
I picked him up at his apartment and drove to a park a few miles away. I started blubbering right off the bat and told him my plans. He said "ok." I also told him I was scared of his reaction. He said "it is up to me To tell you how to live your life...did you think I wouldn't still love you?" at this point I was shaking and it felt like a huge weight lifted off me. I told him he was going to have to come to terms with what this means to his new family and what interaction he wanted with me and his wife and child. He said "don't be stupid. I am not going to keep my family away from my dad regardless of how he is living."
Aside from some pronoun training later he did so much better than I could imagine. We drank some beers and played an old knife game I learned in the Marine Corps called Mumbly Peg. I then took him to pick up his wife and we spent that evening and the following morning together talking and getting to know each other better. It was a fantastic trip.
