You just have to see them. You can get round trip to Thailand for ~US$950 on China Airlines. They are everywhere and widely accepted.
Though I've been in Phuket now for almost two years, I still don't understand the differences between Thai and western xdresser/TGs. Having been in one and casual encounter with another two, it's scary being in relationship with them because of the prostitution aspect (they still do it, cuz there's good money in it), but I hope to someday make some friends who are Thai TGs.
Neat book for those interested, "The Third Sex, Kathoey - Thailand's Ladyboys" by Richard Totman. Very quick read, very surface, but still interesting.
