Well, I finally did it... I ventured outside! After several weeks (months?) of putting together the perfect outfit, building the wig, practicing proper posture and walking in heels, I figured I was ready. My friend from MAC came over and did a great job on my face, I climbed into my various layers of clothing, then pounded back some liquid courage to get myself out the door (vodka).
Walking into the bar was blindingly intense. As soon as I headed up to the door girl, it seemed that all eyes were focused solely on me - even though it was drag night. Getting a big smile and a "good job" from the bouncer helped a bit, as did the shots of tequila offered at the bar for $2.50. There were several other queens there in different styles of dress and attitude, none of which were gothed out as much as I was. When I walked up and said hello to my friends that didn't know about this part of my life, they FLIPPED OUT. Good flipped though; flipped as in "Holy crap! You're hot!"
Random people began floating towards me and asking 'So when are you on?', 'What song are you singing?', and several other questions probing into when I was going to head up on stage. After informing them that I wasn't going anywhere near the stage that night, I was hit by a barrage of shocked and surprised looks. The real kicker was telling them that it was my first night out dressed like that. There were plenty of 'ooohs' and 'ahhhs' to pad my ego.
The crowned Ms. Gay Edmonton was MCing that night, and took a moment to engage me in conversation. She loved my outfit, and wanted to make sure that I would come out to the next drag night dressed up. Other queens also began striking up conversation with me, making me feel quite at home. Even some of my friends that weren't "in the know" expressed interest in dressing up sometime, to which I advised "I have plenty of clothes".
The next few hours had many a compliment, double take, free drink, etc flying in my direction until we decided it was time to grab some sleep. We headed home and I started the painstaking task of removing my makeup. Mac Fix+ is a must have for keeping your makeup sealed for long lengths of time, but is a very frustrating thing in the clean up process (completely waterproof, drips of water will bead on your face). Getting out of the corset was a huge relief, and sleep came rather quickly after a short moment of reflecting on the amazing experience that I had... and how I can't wait to repeat it.
Here's a couple pics from the night!
