When you dress, how much weight do you give to the age-appropriateness of your clothing? Do you present yourself as a woman of your own age, or someone younger?

Although I look and drull over what the younger gg are wearing, I know they wouldn't look nice/approperiate on me. There fore I only wear things that are age appropriate and look good on me.

I still think I've got the Legs to pull off a Mini skirt, and some styles, though a little young for me I still love to wear, but their mainly worn at home,When Im out and about I would say I probably dress my age.But still stylish, the frumpy or dowdy look though isn't where I see myself

Going with the age appropriate now. To the point that I just ordered my first gray wig. Figure the hair needs to match the wrinkles. The wig is only 50%gray/50%brown. I'm guessing my own hair has more gray than that. So a little trying to look younger even now. LOL

I am told when dressed it subtracts like 10-15 years so maybe not what a teenager would wear, but definitely younger and not "old lady-ish"

Hi Dawn, Getting old is mandatory but dressing that way is optional.
I have a wide range to choose from I can dress my age or much younger.

I pretty much dress as I like, according to whatever fashions are available to fit me!!! I don't dress too young (Id' look silly), but I don't dress what one would consider to be age appropriate (which is a very vague term that doesn't mean much to me). If I like the fashion, and I think I can pull it off, I'll go for it. :)

I refuse to dress age appropriate..... Male or female! Not that I dress like a teenager but i color what little hair I have left and will never buy a grey wig...... That's what cosmetics are all about!! I refuse to look like an old lady or an old man! I'm almost 60 and still play ice hockey a couple times a week... I will never get old as long as I can still buy 5-hour energy!! Lol.

So what does this question really mean? Do I buy short dresses that are clearly to be worn by teenagers? Well, no. Why not? As an inverted triangle I would look absolutely silly with a strapless dress that displayed my broad shoulders and well-developed arms. So that's out. Women of every age are not above showing a little cleavage, so that's not an issue. Do I wear clothes that are shapeless? Well no, I am working on an evermore shapely body and I see no reason to hide it at any age.

So that comes down to legs. My entry into this world was spearheaded by "legs that won't quit" according to my wife. The skirt she first purchased for me is a flouncy little black number that stops mid-thigh at the lowest! I have tunic-length sweaters and tops that are even a bit shorter, all of them made to show off my legs in black stockings or thigh highs. Would I ever wear these out? Probably not, but I would add leggings or leather jeans and then it all works for any age.

It's a matter of body constraints and working with what you have, hiding what you want hidden, and being fashion concious as any GG would.

I try to wear clothes that are attractive, stylish and appropriate both to my age, the season and the setting I'm in. So, if most women shoppers are wearing shorts or capris and tank tops, that's what I'll be wearing. And of course, I do what I can to distract attention from my arms/shoulders/hands and like Tina, emphasize the legs a bit more.

My GG girl friends keep telling me to dress younger and call me 'soccer mom,' but I already think I dress younger than my late 30s chronological age. I don't want to get into being a caricature and there's no way I can pull off 20s, so dressing in the Juniors and too young looking stuff just doesn;'t sit right with me.

I wear what I like and it is usually age appropiate for someone a few years younger than I am. Once in a while I will wear something that is totally wrong for my age and a bit ****ty. But, that is only for wearing at home when I'm alone. After all, I do want to have some fun.

what age you talkin' 'bout? The stone age? The age of reason? Rock of ages?

So, we argue and fight over the right to wear what we want, then we start deciding what is appropriate for some of us? What and when is the age thing? Is there a law somewhere I missed?

I wear what I like, as long as it is venue appropriate. What determines "age" appropriate? Some will become more conservative because they have children. So certain parts of their lives change because of that. I will buy that, that is how they feel. But "we" don't even get an age or life stage pass. Remember? If you ask a section of the public they will tell you anything you wear is inappropriate.

I say if you like it, it makes you happy and doesn't break any decency laws in your community, wear it. My opinion is no matter what gender or age or lifestyle we have, the decision as to what we look like is not anyone's but own. Too many lose the love of life because they think they have to grow old, Life is short, live it to the fullest. No re-rides here. If you are 21 and want to dress in sweats an a baggy top and flip flops...go for it. But I am going to be noticed and proud

I dress go clothes i like rather than worrying about whether they are appropriate to my age. Mostly i'd say that my choice of clothes is similar to my age though, due to the shops i buy my clothes from!

I try to keep it age appropriate, but at the same time, I've been told that I look young for my age.

People guess me to be in my early 20's even though I am in my early 30's. In guy mode, it's kind of annoying because in a way I guess I look less manly compared to the average guy. On the other hand, it makes me look more androgynous which I don't mind. If that makes sense. Dressing like an older would definitely attract unwanted to attention. So, I try to keep my style young and casual.

Always age appropriate. Perhaps somewhat dressier than the normal as I very very seldom wear pants. Perhaps a pants suit. But a very nice pants suit. Mostly skirts and dresses. Never above knee height.

I am 79 years old, but have not dressed my age for many years. The major reason is my legs, which my late wife always said were the legs of a much younger lady! I actually have won prizes for my ladylike legs. So I wear mid thigh skirts or dresses most of the time. Even though now, without the help of my dear wife, I do not even try to pass!! I am proud of my legs and don't mind showing them off!! I do not own any Granny clothes!!

Are there actually people here who really believe that if you wear female clothing that matches your age, the rest of society will think, 'well, he's wearing female clothing, but as long as it's age appropriate, then I guess it's perfectly fine; but if he was wearing something for a woman twenty years younger or older, well then that would be weird'. Wow.

kendra_gurl

There really is not a lot of difference in what GG's wear from their mid 40's to their early 60's as I am. Unless the ones in their mid 40's are still trying to look late 20's.

Our advantage is our ability to wear wig styles that help to take years off our apperance plus needing a bit more coverage in makeup. The main thing I try to do is only purchase one new item a month from the latest things out at Dillard's or Macy's instead of the junk on the 75% off racks that no one else wanted. As a part time CD I do not need a huge daily wardrobe so I buy quality over quantity and it really pays dividends in the form of compliments while out.

I recently purchased a new wig which I have received several compliments form both male and female total strangers. I'm convinced that the proper clothing, hair and makeup can be the focal point of the publics attention rather than reading me as a CD on first glance.

Here is the wig. Wife says its by far the most real looking I have ever worn and for $62.00 plus 15% off right now its a steal.

Wow.

NO Lexi but I do think is you wear a micro mini with fishnets and platform heels you had better look under 30 or your gonna stand out and be laughed at even if you are a GG.

I think you are missing the point. If you don't stand a chance of passing It might not make any difference but if your trying to pass or at least blend then age appropriate is a must

I suppose you would call my wardrobe "age appropriate" because I don't try to look like mutton dressed up as lamb.

With my thunder thighs, I can't wear short skirts without making other people feel ill, so I don't. That doesn't stop people describing me a very girlie.

I am in my late 50s, I play guitar in 3 rock bands... loud and proud... I also sing... I probably dress inappropriately as a guy! So as Kaz? She is having lots of fun! I am a grandfather... what does that mean in terms of 'age appropriate'? Maybe I should die sometime soon?

More than age appropiate I think I dress size appropriate. Being a size 20 or so there isn't much young stuff available my size. I like knee length skirts & dresses and colorful clothing. I don't dress old, but more in the style of a well dressed 40-50 year old woman.

Since I do not go out (yet) it really would not matter either way. But I do tend to look for clothes and shoes that are for women my age (37), and who are carrying a little (okay, a lot) of extra weight. But I do have some outfits that I wear around the house that would probably be better suited for a woman ten to fifteen years younger ;)

With the newest wig my spouse tells me I look about 45, so I would say I dress age appropriate.
It's going to take a lot to get me to go grey and dress like a little old lady...maybe when I'm 90... :heehee:

CynthiaD
08-23-2011, 03:57 PM
When I go out, I try to dress like I'm at least 100 years old. I buy old-lady dresses at thrift stores and bake them in the oven for a few hours to give them that just-about-to-fall-apart look. I also buy the most beat up shoes I can find and run them through the dryer with a bunch of rocks. As a finishing touch, I use pliers to yank a few clumps of hair out of my wig. I don't have to worry too much about wrinkles due to many years of hard living, but when I want to look really bad, I put on a layer of elmer's glue mixed with plaster of Paris.

The reason I like this look is because I can whack young smart-alecs with my cane with no fear of retribution. In fact, a lot of times they apologize to me! The other day I managed to get this one teenage wiseacre three times before he got out of reach!

Disclaimer:
Don't try any of this stuff at home!

I dress younger than my age most of the time but I think I do the same in both male and female modes - I am a big kid! I think when I finally do start stepping out of my closet more I will dress more age appropriate but there are some things like toe rings and such that I think are more personality driven the age driven - I model my dress off my SO who is the same age as me and she wears toe rings and dresses younger than her age too.

After raising a kid, I've concluded that "age appropriate" is a term that only applies up to the age of about 10 years old. After that, the only real method of differentiating children from adults is by height. :D

Since most of my public appearances typically include the objective of blending in with the rest of the fish in the fishbowl, I do consider that factor. But it is always relative to the "mission".

I also acknowledge the fact that I too am subject to the influence of self-deception and magical thinking...believing I can "pull it off" when others cannot. :)

At home...it is a "fantasy land"...

Dress freely, take pictures...ask questions later...
Better yet...Admit nothing~Deny everything!

I believe that I dress very age appropriately because my girlfriends always compliment me on
my appearance and for my eye for fashion & the way I coordinate my clothing, jewellery, use
make-up etc, even when I personally thought there was something wrong with how I looked.

Because I was born in 1962 & was most influenced by the 70s, I dress like a 60/70's flowerchild
which also fits very well with the warm tropical environment I live in. But I do really like to get
dressed up if I am going out on the town for the night. Even though I do have the legs for a mini
skirt or shorter dresses, I won't usually wear them. I do have shorter dresses which I also like to
wear black tights under because even here in the tropics, in the cooler winter months it can get
cold at night - this year we have experienced highly unusual cooler temperatures & lots of local
people have been getting the flu which I am also just getting over now.

My tattoos also play a huge part in how I choose my fashions & the way I dress as well.

I also usually wear longer dresses or shorter dresses with tights because I also have some tattoos
on my lower legs. One of those tattoos is a dagger passing in & out of the skin as a combat related
tatt with my former infantry regiment also tattooed into the design. Additionally I also have a black
panther's head & a sailing square rigger tall-ship on my lower legs as well which are all male orientated
designs. The panther's head is a cover up tattoo to cover a feminine design I got at the age of 18.
But I am having laser tattoo removal now to remove all my tattoos which will take at about 2-3 years.

Because I also have tattoos on my chest & upper arms, I cover up the tattoos by wearing short sleeved
tops & blouse. Two of my tattoos on my upper arms are cover ups I got to cover up feminine designs of
roses & a heart because I tried to proved to the world I was masculine. But I still have one of my original
feminine tattoos which is a butterfly on my upper shoulder. I never got this covered up because of what it
always meant to me. So I guess I had to always keep o something that reflected the female side of me.
So it is the only tattoo that I won't get ever removed.

The largest tattoo on my body is a large eagle with it's wings spread tattooed right across my chest. I want
it removed because I am not happy with how it looks or the reasons why I got it. But my lesbian girlfriends are
telling me not to get rid of it because it looks very interesting how the wings come up from my cleavage & then
wraps up & over my breasts. The upper part of wings are revealed if I wear a top with an low cut open front that
shows of any sort of cleavage. I have been out on the town with them revealed and noone has ever said anything
bad, the compliments have always been good. But still I am not happy about why I got it in the first place & that
was because I was trying to prove to myself & the rest of the world that I was something that I am not. So I still
would like to be free of all of that.

So I do dress age appropriately & to suit the environment or any occasion I might be attending, but I am also
heavily influenced in what I buy & wear by the vandalism I did to my body when I was a teenager & young adult.

Please, I always ensure my dresses never ever go above ankle height and I always stand in front of the spotlight to ensure I cannot see through the dress. I always wear high collars and ensure the top button is always done up so no-one can peek down the bra. Never have long fingernails, that is so demeaning, I always manage to cut them and shape them with a file and always do it in the bathroom so no one sees me. I do not allow any part of my foot show because that is not lady like for a person of my age.

That is enough. Dress as you please. I wear minis, jeans, pants skirts dresses and if they are a younger style wow, its the clothes I love not the rules that are so outdated. I leave the elastic waisted pants and over sized blouse with flats to those who like them. Not me hun I wear what I like when I like coz I hardly ever feel my age anyway. Well maybe after a 6km run in the heat. I may even go rudey nudey too at times and that is even without ironing.

I guess I would be classified as age appropriate, but I tend to bend a little younger on the fit and fabric choices I make. When I do go out (which ain't too often) I am very mainstream, since I live in the heart of that dreaded pot of narrow minded hypocrites known as the bible belt, and I need no extra attention drawn to the fact that I am who (or what) I am.

When you dress, how much weight do you give to the age-appropriateness of your clothing? Do you present yourself as a woman of your own age, or someone younger?

I dress my age when I go out, since I wish to either blend in or “pass,” but when I’m in my own space I dress much younger than my age – the latter makes me feel young. I prefer to dress like a modified schoolgirl (that’s the impression), but if I go out I will lengthen the skirt, subdue the “look” and come out looking like a time-displaced English teacher. In private, I can wear very feminine dresses with puffy sleeves and flouncy high hems, plus cute little shoes and socks, something that would attract attention no matter what gender I happened to be. I SWISH in private, but out in the world I am much more reserved…

I dress mostly to match my presentation. When I wear my wig, I dress as a woman. With full makeup (and a good nights sleep. lol) I've been told that I look like I'm in my 30's. So yes, I'd say I mostly wear age appropriate clothing for my "presented" age. As I am 57 in man years, I dress considerably younger than that!

Draw your own conclusions. http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/16108928@N07/

Hello Dawn!
When I wore age appropriate clothes I felt old and not all that pretty. I started wearing things that would be for someone about 12 years younger and surprise of surprises....started getting compliments. I'm told by strangers and people that I know that I look about 20 years younger then I actually am. I used to say and think "yea, right", but I have heard it to much not to believe it now.

I guess my wife dresses in appropriately to the situation. She wears business suits for work, can dress up or down depending on the situation, but I can't say that her choices are specifically age appropriate. They fit her build (a fit size 8) height (5'5") coloring (a freckled red-head) and personality (bright & bubbly). I suppose I emulate her to a degree in my selection of attire.

My wife and I dress differently, not so much by age, but by style. She prefers a more casual look and I a more classic look. I'm not totally skirts and heels although I do that now and then, but I am not much for t-shirts and shorts. She is more relaxed in that way...although I have been working to get her into something a little dressier now and then. I'm not out to change her style, just sort of bring it up a notch.
As for the age question...I think we both dress a bit younger, but not so much that it's really noticeable. No one is going to say that either of us is trying to dress too young, but neither of us dresses (or looks) our age.

I am very keen about age appropriate wear, makeup and hair. I really cannot stand seeing a TG OR a GG that tries for whatever reason to "appear" younger (or older for that matter) than they are. If it is what you want to do, then fine. I avoid making judgements about people, but I do choose what I personnaly like or dislike. While I dislike seeing a 65 year old woman or TG wearing miniskirts that are 2 inches below the giblets, and 4" platform boots laced up above the knee.......it does not mean I dislike you.

If I am dressing 'for me' then anything goes! I'll try all sorts! If I am going to go walkabout I need to consider not so much 'age appropriateness', as I have a problem with this as a concept (who the hell should tell me what to wear and why?), but more of acceptance. I have been obsessed with the idea of 'blending' or whatever other terms we use to describe 'getting away with it'... I think the real issue is acceptance, ie whether it doesn't matter if we are 'read' or not... we are accepted..

I post pics on this forum to check if the outfits I wear 'work' for me... I am well aware that pics are not real life, but they are a guide.

I dress age appropriate. When I was younger and bought my first wig it was blond. The next wig was brunette. Now it is grey which reflects my age. I've been considering getting a salt and pepper- grey and brown. As to clothing, I've always gone for a dress that hits just above the knee or lower. And, appropriate undergarments. Dressing like my granddaughter just would NOT make it!

I do hundreds of situps, crunches, leg presses, hip adductors, lats pulldowns and pec decks, plus hours of exercycling, et cetera, a week to keep my body looking like it's 35-40, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let a few stray wrinkles on my throat or age spots on my hands make me dress like I'm 56. My Femme Idol and Daydream are Kim Cattrall and her Sex and the City character Samantha Jones, and Kim is almost the same age as me. When she grows up, and starts dressing like a dowager, so will I, but not until then.
