View Full Version : How many here are the first child or only children, and how many are not?

Hearing a piece on NPR about first born and only children this morning got me thinking. Not something I do very often! Which led me to the query in the title of this thread. I'll tally the answers when the thread starts getting cold.

My thinking is that possibly as only children we had way too much time on our hands to fantasize, experiment, and dress up! And that's the cause of our wonderful malady!

I am the first born child.
But I am not the only. I have two other sisters. On born a year after me. The other, two years after me. So. In a nutshell.
When I was 3. My middle sister was 2, and the youngest was 1.

My mother NEVER gave me any form of girly clothing or anything girly.
But, being with two girls that WERE getting the girly clothes, etc. I am sure that contributes to my desire to try wearing their clothes.
I did, and the rest is history. (With A LOT of speed bumps!)

Only child for the first six years and yep, had plenty of time on my hands. Back in those days, parental involvement meant feeding me when I was hungry and that's about it. At 4 I was walking to kindergarten alone on the sidewalk about half a mile. As they say in that song, not only was it a different time, it was a very different world.

Started dressing back when I was 5 and I can still remember the day it all happened. You know, that ... wow, I've got to wear that pink dress of my neighbors. I know, at 5 can you believe it? But it's true. Later two siblings came along but we were so far apart in ages by then, we didn't do anything together.

I'm the oldest surviving child, mom had triplet girls three years before me, but they were premature and died within 24 hours of birth. I have one brother, 6 1/2 years younger. I spent almost my whole childhood from birth to about 4 or 5 without close friends and had to play by myself most days until then. When I was 4 or 5, people with young kids moved in next door and I then had someone else to play with. I definitely wanted to be a girl by then because I remember dressing up with the neighbor girl who was about my age.

My brother is fourteen months older. My sister is twelve years younger, so I really grew up in the formative years as the second child. After having a male first my mother wanted a girl. Surprise! I've always wondered if that desire had an effect on me. Maybe transmitting that desire to me when I was in her womb?? Some say a child may favor foods the mother ate during pregnancy. Music mom may have listened to. Maybe the idea is not as far fetched as it sounds?

Hi gurls, thanks so much for participating.

In 3 days, with 85 replies, I calculate 56 only or first born, and 29 with older siblings.

There was a bit of a rush of older siblings towards the end, and as Karen claims maybe only and first borns may be more inclined to reply. I really don't see why that would be true. What difference does it make. Are the only children and first born so vain that they would be prone to bragging about it. Hard to imagine.

So with the results almost 2 to 1 in favor of the only children and first born, I'm inclined to feel that our time alone allowed us to explore our own sexuality a little more than the other group, and of course the internet opened up our closets.

I had a feeling that the results would be something like this. In fact, I thought it might even be weighted more heavily towards the only and first borns.

Middle child with 2 older brothers and then younger sister and younger brother. Today only my next oldest brother and my youngest brother are alive. My sister died with brain cancer about 12 years ago. My oldest brother died on July 4th this year. My dad died when I was only ten and my mother died when I was only 16. I was never close with any of them other then my bext oldest brother that lives only 10 miles away. But have not talked to him in over 3 years since I foolishly told him I was a CD. His over the top religious beliefs would not allow someone like me in his life. And he calls himself a Christian? Glad I'm not like him. Sorry got off track.
But I can tell you this...My mom definately favored me and came to me with family issues before she would ever talk to my older brothers. She was a remarkable, strong, brave woman. I often wondered if my being transgendered made her and I closer.

It is the way you posed the start of the question. "How many here are the first child or only children,". After seeing how responses go on this forum, the fact that there are people who skim the subjects means that those that seem directly addressed in a question are more likely to answer. It is kind of like if you say "CDers only" in a subject would probably make others pass even reading it unless they read everything.

Then you have the issue of what is the standard. If you had an even distribution, all of the only children will be first born (duh), half of those from a two child family, a third of those from a three child family, and so on. So your results just from that will be heavily skewed to the oldest.

But so much for being a wet blanket. These kinds of "surveys" are fun because there are always some interesting and creative responses.

So with 6 additional replies in 4 days, we are at 59 only or first born, and 30 with older siblings. This only further reinforces my previous conclusion of a 2 to 1 ratio.

I have no idea what real significance there is to such a survey, but I do find it interesting. The NPR program stated that only and first born children normally have IQ's higher than normal. With all the talented CDers that I meet on the forum and socially, this would definitely seem to be the case.

Another only child here...and also lacking an extended family because my father was an only child himself.

We emigrated to North America when I was 5, and gradually lost touch with our relatives overseas, so except for some childhood friends, I grew up pretty much in isolation from that perspective. I was also a latch-key kid from an early age onwards, which gave me ample opportunity to experiment with my mother's clothes when I came home to an empty house after school.

I have two main regrets about this which impacted directly on my crossdressing:

1) I never had an older sister whose clothes I could try on as well, as they would have been more age-appropriate than my mother's - although she had a great sense of style herself and loved to wear high heels.

2) My grandparents came to live with us for a brief period while I was between the ages of 11 - 13, so they were always around even when my parents were at work. This also happened to coincide with the "sweet spot" during which time my mother and I were approximately the same height and her clothing and shoe sizes were identical to mine. Talk about enforced missed opportunities - Aaaarrrrrgh!!!!    :thumbsdn:

No one regonised that I was not a girl in those days when she took me out shopping etc. I wore my mothers nightie and corsets too secretly. My mother was a fashionable woman. I began as a Cd after I left home and began buying my own feminine clothing. I know now that my mother would have rather a girl baby than a boy !:battingeyelashes:

Third son, four and two years junior, with very butch sister 13 months younger. Mom had a fifth child who died shortly after birth. I've seen some interesting data about second and third sons having TG/gay propensities, and more regarding how the brain gets wired for such things as gender identity and sexual orientation. Basically, misdelivery of crucial hormonal cocktails to the fetus at crucial times. Too much to elaborate here, but fascinating in the way it potentially explains every gender variant, from hyper-butch gay men to lipstick lesbians to folks like us...

Lynn Marie, I commend you for tackling this project, doing the work, and for reporting your results to us. You didn't say why, but I guessed that you were looking for a trend, as many others have done in the past (were you raised only by your mother, are you left-handed, parents divorced, play the guitar...etc...). If only it were that easy to figure out why we crossdress. I'm not a statistician, but I think to draw any valid conclusions, we would need to know answers to the same question from the general popluation (and maybe, of just men, although a few gg's may have responded). Interesting, though.

I am a first born as well, I have one younger sister and she is a year and a half younger than me.

I don't know if she was the primary reason I started dressing, I just know that I started off wearing her outfits when I was 4 or 5.
So I can honestly say without the inspiration of her clothes at least I may not have started dressing.

Still don't know what made me want to start, I have just always found it interesting to dress.

1st born with sister a year younger (the source of my early female clothing), and a little brother 5 years younger. My sister, who was about my size, was the unknowing provider of a tutu (first female clothing worn), panties, tights, and leotards for my early fore into cross dressing.

Thought this thread was dead yesterday!

Okay, my latest tally is:

76 for the first or onlys.........and...........39 for the older siblings

Still pretty close to a 2 to 1 ratio

This is not statistically significantly different from the prevalence of first born children in the general population, given modern demographic trends toward small families. And since small families tend to correlate with affluence, if you controlled for the typical income and education level of the participants here, it might even be a little bit less than you would expect from chance.

About 60% of ALL children in the First World are first borns, as well as about 80% of the students at Harvard.

An only child.....and my mother always used to tell everyone she wanted a dughter, not a son.....

...and does she now know that she did get her daughter after all?:heehee:

As the ancient Chinese curse puts it: "Be careful what you wish for - you might just get it!" :heehee: :D

It would have been interesting to combine this poll with one asking how many of us were Geminis as well to see the degree of overlap. I would suspect a strong correlation between the two...

I, for one, am both a Gemini and an only child. Needless to say, my fate as a transgendered individual was sealed form Day 1...  :heehee: :D
