Gender Correction Surgery will continue to be paid for in the Province of Ontario, Canada, by the provincial medicare plan since the Liberals won the last election last night. A slur against gays and trans people, in connection with educational materials in the schools, backfired in the urban ridings, for the Progressive Conservative leader, whose party came in second.

The procedure for applying for GCS in Ontario is cumbersome and unnecessarily slow, yet it was reinstated after the Liberals won over the Conservatives several years ago, the Conservatives having eliminated that pre-existing coverage for ideological reasons. when they were in power. Strong support for the socialists, the third party, would seem to ensure a trans-positive response from the government in Ontario, into the future.

Since the GCS operations are conducted in Montreal, another Province, in a private clinic, the option for residents of Ontario to pay out of their own pocket to speed up the process remains.

Medicare does not cover cosmetic surgery and on that basis, breast enhancement is not funded for trans people in Ontario, through medicare, but must be paid for out of the individual's pocket. Supplementary medical insurance coverage is not permitted, in order to keep the public medicare system strong.
