The story is not complete yet, but it sounds very positive !! Check out this story about a young TS who wants to join the Girl Scouts:

I read that this morning, pretty amazing. I am so happy for her! Times are really changing. Hopefully they will be able to hold to that decision because there is going to be a lot of criticism.

Pity that the reporter couldn't be bothered to get the child's gender right

I think it is great that her family is trying for her. It appears that the Girl Scouts will allow her to join. What bothers me is the media has their teeth into the matter already.

I had not read that yet but that is exciting news. I wish my parents would have allowed me to do that but instead, I was abused for years by my parents trying to force me to be masculine and to act like a boy. It never worked no matter the degree of the punishments I had to endure. This gives me hope that future children who are transgender will not have to suffer like most of us have.

Quite frankly this is awesome. The statement is one of complete inclusiveness without jumping some test barrier.

I found the follow up report to this story to be extremely disrespectful of this child's gender identity and the reporters
and the psychiatrist to be ignorant and bigoted. Using improper pronouns and referring to this child as him and a boy
all the time. And then they are essentially blaming the parents for a child being transgendered/transsexual?
WTF?

The sad thing about this is that the Girl Scouts are years behind the B.S.A. (Boy Scouts of America). When I was in the BSA girls were permitted to join (and it was not because they were TS, either). The courts decided it was discriminatory for the BSA to not allow girls to join.

Decades later we have the Girl Scouts, who not only won't admit boys but won't admit TS. Right... Equality for all. Yep.

Fractured, if I'm reading the article right, the Girl Scouts are allowing TS folks.

The way I read the article, it took the intervention of the local news agency (by asking questions) to cause higher-ups in the organization to "correct" the local troop leader. I agree it is a victory but it is long overdue. And given the statements of the organizers it appears that they are still trying to limit the organization to girls. The BSA was taken to court because they were limiting their organization to only boys. The BSA lost - they are required to permit girls to participate. This occurred over a decade ago, and yet it appears the Girl Scouts are able to be more insular.

If the mother had referred to her as her instead of using "he" I am thinking this never would have gotten any attention, because most of what I have been reading indicates that the girl scouts already have been being fairly accommodating to transgender kids.

Screw 9News!

As usual...a rather daft remark from you. Screw 9news? really? The biggest news channel in Colorado, which is simulcast to nebraska, wyoming, utah and parts of Arizona....basically 5 states and this station is TALKING about transgender issues out in the open getting people to talk about things. Yes...the psychiatrist guy being interviewed was not respectful at all, but the news anchors were quite interested in seeing the child get INTO the girl scouts and the reporter especially talking about TRANSGENDER children and what the stance of the Girl Scouts IS. Which is all inclusive if the individual presents as female. Did you MISS that?
Umm what planet are you on?
The black gentlemen(only using color to refer to who Im talking about...not defamatory) was the one being rude. But no where in there did the Mom call the child HER. So what are the anchors supposed to call the child? It??? Please get over yourself and stop getting offended by every person in the media thats actually trying to bring trans issues out in to the public light. Jeez!!!!

I agree with the thread OP and most everyone else sees this too....it WAS a victory.

I didn't know where to put this however it seems that this as been brought to national attention as it is now being reported on CNN and omg is their story positive.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/29/health/gender-children/

however the posts about the article is really disparaging.
