As the title states has anyone been successful in getting a NEW Social Security Number after transitioning?

I have had my new name and gender marker changed with the social security administration but they kept my original SSA number the same.

I would sure love to get a new number...anyone successfully changed their SSA number?

Hi Traci,

I didn't know you could do this so out of curiosity I went to the SSA website. It looks like they let you do it for identity theft and if you are the victim of domestic violence. Transition isn't clear????? Here is what they say for identity theft:

Should you get a new Social Security number?
If you have done all you can to fix the problems resulting from misuse of your Social Security number and someone still is using your number, we may assign you a new number.

You cannot get a new Social Security number:

To avoid the consequences of filing for bankruptcy;
If you intend to avoid the law or your legal responsibility; or
If your Social Security card is lost or stolen, but there is no evidence that someone is using your number.
If you decide to apply for a new num*ber, you will need to prove your age, U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status and identity. For more information, ask for Your Social Security Number And Card (Publication Number 05-10002). You also will need to provide evidence that you still are being disadvantaged by the misuse.

Keep in mind that a new number probably will not solve all your problems. This is because other governmental agencies (such as the Internal Revenue Service and state motor vehicle agencies) and private businesses (such as banks and credit reporting companies) likely will have records under your old number. Also, because credit reporting companies use the number, along with other personal information, to identify your credit record, using a new number will not guarantee you a fresh start. This is especially true if your other personal information, such as your name and address, remains the same.

If you receive a new Social Security number, you will not be able use the old number anymore.

For some victims of identity theft, a new number actually creates new problems. If the old credit information is not associated with the new number, the absence of any credit history under the new number may make it more difficult for you to get credit.

They only issue new numbers when yours has been lost or stolen. At that point both old and new numbers will be forever linked to each other in your file. When you receive a report from SS both numbers will be shown. At least this is what happened when I reported my purse stolen a few years ago and my SS card was in the purse.

Traci I have done the same as you with the name and gender changes but why would you want a new number? It would be more confusing when you retire and trust me it is confusing enough.

Yes that would be an issue to address when it comes time to collect SS. But my reason for wanting a new number is so that I don't have to explain that I was once a male or have that info come up and bite me in the butt.

I too went to their website and found nothing that addresses changing gender and a new number assigned.

Traci,
Yes a new number can be assigned but they do need to be linked. If they aren't you lose all your records prior to the new number. A gender and name change will let you get a new one with court record. Ther really is no need for a new number after you get name and gender change with them as all any one can pull up is current info from ss admin.. the past only comes from credit reports for 7 years.or people who know your previous life as a male. I did get min3e changed in2001 but it is linked to old number..

I wouldn't do anything that could possibly screw up your retirement. Dealing with SS is confusing enough already!

Hi Tracy,

The SSA releashed a statement sometime this past summer saying that they would no longer respond to inquries concerning gender. They would also not raise flags for #/gender being inconsistant.

Once you get the SSN changed to female, you won't have to worry, those records will report back female. No gender reveal issues ! Birth certs can be a different matter. I was born in Hawaii for example. Even after showing surgical change, they issue a new birth certificate, with a gender change: but with the reason for the gender change recorded on the birth cert ( revised vs changed ).

No more “gender no match” letters from SSA to employers effective 09/24/2011. See NOTE in link below:

http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/ssnvshandbk/return.htm

I guess that's cool... but I didn't have any problems changing my gender associated with my SSN.

A related question for you all. Just to be sure, one has to have completed SRS to change ones SSN correct? As of now at least. I hope we can change this.

That is what the rules say ... but many people manage to get it changed without SRS letters. Often they take in a letter from their therapist. The SSN offices are not consistent about how they handle this change.

I went to change the info attached to my SIN on Wednesday (the canadian equivalent of the SSN). The number stays the same for us, but the name and gender associated with the number changes. I lost my card at 16, so here was my opportunity to get a new one 29 years later! It was very easy to do and the agent was very respectful. In Quebec, SRS is required to obtain the gender changed on the SIN file.

I already had my name and gender changed on my social security records and got a new card. My question was about getting a NEW NUMBER to replace the original number.
