I am trying to figure out exactly where I fall in the whole scheme of things, and would love to talk to a gender therapist and see where things go from there. The problem that I am having is that I live in Southern Idaho, and can not seem to find any close to the area that I am in. Any information that the ladies here can provide will greatly be appreciated.

Hi Maria Ann,

I know how hard it is to find reliable resources. I don't really know Idaho but I did find these listings. Of course, I don't know if they are valid yet:

Leslie Pederson, M.D.
1015 W. Hays, Boise, ID 83702
Phone (208) 343-4884

Dr. Dave Sanford, Ph.D.
1064 N. Cole Rd., Boise, ID 83704
Phone (208) 377-5720
Gender Therapist

You might also be able to find more references through local chapters of Gemini or Forge, gender support groups.

May I also add;

Scott Woodhead, LCSW
788 Eastland Dr.
Twin Falls, ID. 83301
Phone : (208) 734-1281

Listed on Laura's Playground as a gender Therapist.

Thank you Stephanie, the two that you named are quite a ways away from me. And thank you as well Julia, I had seen his name on a web site, but was not able to find anything else on or about him.I was planning on calling his number on Monday.

You also might be able to link up with a more distant therapist by phone or Skype.

Some therapists do phone counseling too and I suspect if you live in Idaho almost everything is a good ways away. I live in North Carolina and have to drive an hour to see my therapist.

Thank you Tammy for that information.

Maria I didn't check for your area on this site, but it is the one I used to find mine in Kansas. If you go to the left side of the page after doing an initial search in your state you will see that you can narrow the search by the specialty you are looking for. Click more under sexuality and gender and you will see a field for transsexual issues. Click on it and it will let you see therapist that list it as a specialty or at least an issue that the are willing to address. I recommend that you look at their treatment approach and other information to help you make your choice. Best of luck!

Hi Maria, I have just started with a gender therapist (two visits) and it has helped me considerably. If you can find a therapist that you can see in person I would highly recommend that method first. To me it is much more personal if you can sit face to face with a therapist when you open your heart to them. I was fortunate in being able to chose whether I wanted a man or a woman therapist and I felt more comfortable with a woman. My therapist wasn't listed in any of the internet resources and many others may not be as well. If there is a regular therapist, counselor, etc in your area you may want to call them and see if there is anyone in your area that they would recommend or that they refer people to for gender issues. I was fortunate and had a cousin who worked in this field for many years so she knew who to recommend. Even if you have to drive some distance I would still recommend a face to face meeting to start with and then maybe you could do therapy over the phone, at least that way you know who is on the other end. Don't feel alone Maria, there are others of us out there who are asking the same questions you are. I hope you find the right therapist for you.

Thank you Pam, I was kinda thinking the same thing already about the face to face meetings.
