Well the first thing you want to do is use a trimmer to get the long hair off before you shave. if you don't have a trimmer then use nair or some other hair removal product.

As for shaving after the bulk is removed I just shave in the shower. I lather my legs with soap and go by feel. I generally shave the thigh first then the calf. Then switch and do the other leg. Before you get out of the shower, put a leg up on the side of the tub and look it over real careful. Switch legs and check the other one. There are bound to be places you missed. After a few times you will notice the areas you are missing and will pay more attention to those spots while shaving.

After shaving use body moisturizer on your legs. Offsets the soap lather method and leaves legs silky smooth.

Katie gave you some good advice, so I'll just add that it's good to apply some hair conditioner to the places you're going to shave and let it sit about 2-3 minutes. The moisturizer in the conditioner helps soften the hair, which makes shaving easier, in fact I use it instead of shaving gel.

As Katie said, you'll miss spots the first time, so once you've done the first round of shaving, shower off so you can find the spots (the shaving gel will camoflage them).

To avoid irritation try to avoid going over areas more than once, and be sure to rinse the razor frequently to keep the blade from clogging with hair. When you towel off, be sure to pat yourself dry rather than "sawing" the towel, and be sure to moisturize. It's also a good idea to make sure both your towels and bedding are freshly washed to avoid bacteria, which can cause skin infections.

Finally, allow a lot of time for the first time shaving. While it only takes me 10-15 minutes to do a "maintenance" shave, and a half-hour to shave when I'm going out, I'd probably allow at least an hour or two to do it your first time. Part of that will be the time needed to use the trimmers first, and also you're shaving will be slower, since you'll be figuring out the movements needed.

Enjoy!

I am a competative cyclist and I shave about 4 times a week. I have shaved for about 3 years continously... I also love smooth legs. I agree that the conditioner works real well, it should take about 19 minutes max to do your legs and my stomach for myself (special need, darn androgel). I don't have some special "going out", nothing is really special, I go out as myself when I go out, whether it is some light makeup or a little more. It helps that i have no facial hair growth though!

The best advice I can give you is to have a beautician wax your legs! The results are to die for and you stay hair free for alot longer than shaving! Overtime with regular waxing, hair regrowth becomes thinner and alot less hair. hugs Amanda

I have shaved my legs a few times a few years ago. How long does it take for the itching and chaffing to go away? My legs itched about 24 hours a day until the hair grew almost all the way back, and it was especially bad when it first started growing back. Plus, when I would wear jeans it chaffed so bad it was hard to work in.

Jennifer,I agree with Amanda with one exception. You can easily wax yourself and save some money and time.
Casey you will find there is no itching and chaffing.Try it,you will love it.:D
