I just got my first pair of heels and I'm learning how to walk in them, doing pretty good but I have little stumbles once in a while. I started out with a low heel, about the same height as my cowboy boots. I think it is because my heel can move around is causing me some problem.. any suggestions

Are they slingbacks? I have some 4" pumps like that, and I really have to focus on keeping my heels over the back of the shoes. Sux, but I've observed GG's walking the same way.

I've found that when walking in heels it's important to put the toe down first and then the heel. Also, take only small steps and learn to shift your weight from one foot to the other. Good Luck! and remember, the feeling of walking in heels is Heavenly!

they are slingbacks. I do pretty good in them but they try to migrate to one side after a few steps, then I have to adjust. I'll get good at it ,, it's just going to take time and thanks for the help

I have the same problem with slingbacks, I've almost given up on even trying I just get pumps with ankles straps I like the look better anyway.
I do know the correct size shoe makes a ton of difference though, the first slingbacks I had were a tad too big for my foot and I couldn't walk in them at all.

I do not know if you are wearing nylons or if it is bare skin against shoe but I spray a little hairspray on my heel to make them slightly sticky. Depending on the fit and style there are inserts also available to help hold your foot in position. A low heel is a wise place to start. Also the wider the heel base the more comfortable and stable, quarter inch points take time to master and only good quality shoes will be comfortable with this small of a point in my experience.

I come down heel than toe but it is almost instantaneous because if to much time elapses between the time that the point of the heel hits followed by the ball of your foot than the chance of the heel sliding out on you goes up dramatically and gravity will insure your butt hits the floor. Ouch!

Also this stresses the heel if it makes contact with the floor at an angle, the heel must come straight down to avoid it slipping out from under you but the foot is naturally angled to the horizontal surface so it is a matter of learning to change the angle of your foot a fraction of a second before the heel point makes contact with the floor. Looking down at your feet will also throw you off balance, your upper back should be straight with a slight curve at the base of your spine, shoulders back, no slouching, and head held high. ( Be proud ) Probably giving you to much information but when you master it you will understand what it means to glide across the room. The sound of heel than toe when well done sounds very assertive because the full weight of your foot impacts the floor in a staccato of sound Click Clack Click Clack...., and it rings out for all to hear. Very satisfying

Treat walking in heels as making music, use your ears to guide your movements

Walking in heels is a whole body experience and when you get good at it you will find that even out of heels you are more graceful. IMHO

I never realized how important it is to have a pair of shoes which fit well until I started wearing heels. It is so easy to get away with loose-fitting shoes as a man that I really didn't pay much attention to how well the shoes fit my foot when I bought my first few pair of higher heeled women's shoes. It's so hard to find sizes above 11, and I take an 11.5, that I was just grateful if I could find a pair of shoes which didn't cause my toes to curl up and get blistered. As a result, I got several pair which were too large or wide. Wow, when your foot slides around in a pair of three inch or higher heels all sorts of weird things can happen, and none of them are pretty or graceful.

That may be OK for low heels, Stefanie, but NOT for hi heels! All mine r 4"+. The ones that feel loose over spiked heels I consider to be Death Shoes! (I even write that inside them so I won't forget!) I only wear them for shoots at home where I have to walk no more than 50'.

Try taking up yoga, or Pilates, or some other stretching regimen that will strengthen your ankles and focus your balance. It helps, even with loose shoes.
