What do you girls do about painting your nails and work? Do you paint them on Friday afternoon and remove it Monday morning? I would have them painted all the time but my wife thinks it would make people at work uncomfortable and perhaps lead to me losing my job.
Should I test the waters and stop if my boss says anything? Should I mention it before hand? Or should I just stick with weekends? I personally think I should make a name for myself and perhaps down the road bring it up. Oh and I'm new at this job!
Thanks girls!!

Lately I have been using a clear during the week and color on the weekends. Just finished removing my color and putting back on some clear. So far no one at work has said anything about my glossy nails.

That's a good idea, I just had mine done at a salon and chose a very light cream color. You could still see my skin underneath and the white tips. It was nice but not noticeable, so I almost don't see the point. I thought about a light pink, something close to my natural skin color you see under my nails.

I always use clear or high buff on my nails,it is so much a part of me it is a non-issue at work and to any one who knows me.As long as your not breaking a dress code(pun intended),no harm no foul.A fresh start so they don't know any better,no expectations, except for your talent at your career.Enjoy.

I've been wearing clear on my fingers the last month or so. About 6 months ago, I went to Sally's and bought some light pink to wear on my fingers. Me and the SA spent almost 1/2 hour tying to my each bottle to my natural color. I bought the closest pink to my natural color. I ended up wearing that pink every day for about 2 months before I smashed my finger and lost one of my nails.
Now for about a year I've had color on my toes. Every couple weeks I change the color. I rarely have light pink on my toes since almost no one sees them and then only the people I allow to see my toe nails. Right now I have dark pink with blue sparkle on top. The next time I change, I'm putting Midnight Blue on.
So, if you want to test the waters for wearing polish to work, go with clear first. If anyone notices, tell them it is a treatment that you are trying to correct a condition on your nails. If no one notices or says anything, try a light pink next.

I wear clear on my fingers most of the time and sometimes a pale color (pearl now). A few people notice but no one really cares. I wear french tips on toes in summer and color in the winter (dark brown now).
Clear is very easy to pass of to anyone, I go to a salon to have mine done on a regular basis. even if you dont get the full mani you can get a "color change" the place I go charges $4 to remove the old polish and do any color I like.
2 coats of a very sheer, pale pink, plus a topcoat. I've never had a single comment, and I work in a very conservative industry (investment management).

I think a lot of people notice and no one wants to broach the subject.
I have been wearing clear for a couple of years. Always seem to end up with the shiny stuff. :D. But no one has ever said a thing even though I teach on equipment so my hands are right in front of them. This week a checkout lady at the cafeteria asked me if I played the guitar. I said no, why do you ask;knowing roughly where she was going. She said she thought that because I was wearing acrylics. So I told her about the nail strengthener I was wearing and we got into a bit of a talk about nail care. No biggie (and lucky there wasn't a line).

What do you girls do about painting your nails and work?
This is what I suggested to my SO: first, practice, practice, practice so you can put on one coat of polish in 5 minutes flat. It's entirely doable.
Normally for a good polish, as you know there is a base coat, two coats of polish, and a top coat. This is designed to keep the polish on for a long time. But, if you just want to go out for an afternoon or an evening, just dispense with everything, and put on only one coat of the polish. Get a good quality polish so the one coat will still look nice. And also, choose a pale color that will be easy to take off when you get home and will not leave any stubborn residuals, like the bright reds. The fewer coats of lacker on your nails will also make clean up all that much quicker.
If you get used to doing this, putting on just one quick coat will be absorbed seamlessly into your prep time. If you get good enough, you can get all ready to go, coat on and keys at the ready. Then put on the polish, waive your hands around for a minute or two, pick up your keys and you can manipulate them gingerly without smearing anything until you are safe in the car. By the time you get to your destination your polish will have dried. :)

Do people really pay attention to your nails at work? I don't do my own nails, but do have them done at a salon every 2 weeks. My finger nails are always a pale shade of pink, and they are even feminine shaped! I have had nails like that for many years, and have rarely ever had a negative comment!! Most people, both men and women, think they look really nice. Granted, I am self employed Insurance agent, but I am out in the public calling on clients almost every day!!
My nails are like Lea's!! But my toes are bright red!!

I had someone notice my clear glossy nail polish at work in a big way. He asked me if I was wearing nail polish. I told him yes, but technically it was a nail hardener that my wife gave me because my nails were splitting. That seemed to be enough to shut him up, but I guess it could have gotten ugly pretty quickly.
I think a lot of people notice and no one wants to broach the subject.

I've gotten holiday pedis for both Halloween and Christmas, and I've started showing off my toes in Yoga class. I'm wearing bright colors, so it should be pretty obvious, but no one has said anything unless I mentioned it to them first. One Yoga instructor who I confided in said she did notice but didn't want to say anything about it.
I've also gone to massages a couple of times where they certain;y had to notice, but didn't say anything.
So, I think most people notice, but are either afraid to say anything, or disinterested.

Yes! What I've quoted is what I do ... except that at work (as others have indicated) I wear a shiny clear polish. The length of my nails are quite long (for a guy) as they are between an 1/8th and a 1/4 of an inch past my finger tips so with clear shiny polish on them they look pretty girly.
If you are new at this job then you are presumably on a probationary trial period (3 months?), where I work, any new hire can be let go in the first 3 months with no questions asked and you "don't have a legal leg to stand on" ... so at this point in time, I would suggest you err on the side of caution and stick with clear shiny during work hours.

I keep clear polish on during the week (including at work). Despite the longish and glossy nails, no one has ever said anything about them. On the weekends I add color, but I go back to clear before work on Monday. Toes of course are always painted, but nobody sees them.

The one thing I worry about people questioning is not the clear polish, but the length. I have been letting them grow out and have a nice set except for 2 (it was one until I dinged one this morning). On the nails that have grown out, I also have between 1/8 and 1/4 of white past the fingers, almost looks like French Tips when I have on the clear. My wife was giving me some tips on shaping them yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to do that yet.
I also figure that if anyone ever questions the clear, I would just tell them that I was working with some carb cleaner without gloves and it softened my nails so the wife suggested I put on clear hardener until they grew out all the way. Sounds plausible.
If you work at a large company - mine has 40,000+ people, look around. There aren't tons of men with manicured hands, but there are more than you might think, especially among the dressed-to-the-nines, senior guys.

It is a shame, with all the beautiful colors out there to hear most of us girls say, I were clear or a pale pink color at work . It does stink when we have to conform to the norm and not be ourselves. I have wore clear a few times even a color called suger bear which was a pale glossy biege, that was pushing it, and I work in a male dominated enviorment. Someday nail polish on guys will be accepted. I just saw the previews for American Idol and Steven Tyler is wereing a Black polish. Maybe we all should be old forgotten ROCKERS :D With all the girls wearing black polish these days , I figured why couldn't he wear a hot pink or flaming red. I guess wearing black polish is considered Feminine, Back in the day it was GOTH to me if I wore black and never thought of it as feminine

I knew a guy who painted his nails bright pink. He was a hippie-type guy, and I honestly don't know if he had any CD tendencies. And I don't know why he painted his nails. Maybe he just liked to. But they were perfectly visible to all, and nobody questioned them. I certainly didn't.
I think a lot of people notice and no one wants to broach the subject.Exactly.
I see people at work looking at my nails (clear polish, little too long for a man), but no one says anything. The only person who has asked me about them in the past year and a half was a friend. I said, "I like how it looks," and that was that. We were on to the next subject. And he's still my friend. ;)
Much of the world's reaction to you - in any situation - is predicated on your attitude. If you're secure and confident, people will rarely question you. If they do, just remain confident and you'll be fine.

I have my toes painted all the time these days, and have the color changed every couple of weeks.
I've been getting regular manis every week or two with usually a high buff or subtle clear. This last week I decided to have them done with 2 coats of a light pink and finished with a clear gel coat. So far, I've only received 2 comments. One from the wife about nice and shiny they were. And the other from a young girl at work who asked if I painted my nails. I told her that go in for regular mani/pedis. She loved it.
Other than that, I haven't noticed any unusual looks or heard any comments.

My nails are about 5/8" past the fingertips, pink and white acrylic overlays over my natural nails, with a shiny gel topcoat at all times (and color most weekends). I work in a pretty liberal university environment, and although my nails attract attention and the occasional comment, none of it has been negative, and I've had them looking this way long enough now that most people who know me just accept it as part of my everyday appearance. It's fun to get comments from strangers at the checkout counter or fast-food window.
I'm afraid I couldn't actually recommend others follow my example unless they work in a similarly progressive environment, though.

My fingernails are always clear glossed nowadays. Like many of you, I find that people just don't notice or don't want to comment, although I have had one or two compliments at supermarket checkouts. I suppose the girls notice people's hands more when they're taking payments. Toenails vary according to my feelings, currently a very deep, dark berry colour called 'Psycho'. The only person who has commented on my tootsies is my GP and he just said 'Nice colour'.

I keep my toenails painted all the time, usually in a vibrant glossy pink. I'd love to paint my fingernails with a clear polish, but it would have to be pretty subtle - i.e. not glossy. I'm not quite sure why I want to do this, but I've given up trying to figure these things out!

Quite often clear polish on longish nails, then a color if necessary.
The clear stops the color seeping in and staining the nails.
If you need to have them clean there is nothing worse than waiting for the stain to grow out.

I've used OPI Envy Matte. It's not glossy and nearly invisible, but not cheap either. Make sure you get the matte. The regular is more glossy.
Or try Orly Nails for Males. Also matte, but the last time I got it, I found out it had bad stuff in it, toluene, etc. Sally's Beauty Supply carries it. The SA even recommended it to me when I asked for clear nail polish for me.

I keep my toe nails polished all of the time. I go and get a pedicure and manicure about every 5 to 6 weeks. When I go the nail technician polishes my toe nails. I usually get a red color put on them. I notice some people looking at me but I don't care. On my manicure, most of the time I have her put a clear polish on my finger nails. She puts on a base coat and then a polish from orly (I get it at CVS) that is called something like - natural pink and then she puts a lear coat on top of that. This just makes the nails look good with a slight shine and the natual pink color just looks like your normal pink nails. Most people don't notice that. And very few would even guess that you have a nail polish color on your finger nails. Every once in a while I will have the nail technician polish my finger nails the same color as my toe nails. That really gets some strange looks from the people but once again, I don't care. I love it when my toe nails and finger nails are matching colors. I will get some strange looks from people in the stores when I am buying thins and a few have actually said something like that I have very beautiful finger nails. I usually will keep the colored polish on for about 2 or 3 weeks before I remove it.
I wear clear Orly "Tough Cookie" on my fingers most of the time to strengthen them. It's glossy, but then again there are men who get regular manicures. I keep them slightly long, trimmed to the end of my fingers so they look good in either mode. I've only had one person comment on them, the manicurist at the salon where I go to get my drab haircut. She said "You have nice nails."
I wouldn't wear color in male mode because of my work environment. Clear is pushing things as far as I would want to go.
When I go out, I do the whole ridge filler/2 coats color/2 coats topcoat procedure. It's time consuming, but I love the look and feel of having fabulous nails. It's painful the next morning when 10 absolutely perfect nails that a GG would be showing off to her friends have to go into the acetone. :(

I guess I am lucky as I am retired and don't need to worry about my polished nails at work. I am not quite good enough at putting on my nail polish. I am right handed and so my right hand suffers from using my left hand to polish my right nails.

During the week I just use a clear polish, but come friday night the sparkly colours come out and stay on till Sunday evening. Whilst I don't mind having them coloured during the weekend and going out in either mode and having people see, I'm not confident to have them coloured at work yet.
My nails, those that haven't broken, are normally 4 - 5 mm over the end of my finger when viewed from the reverse of my hand, which I guess is unusual for a man. Most people don't notice, though I just spent all of Christmas afternoon having my sister tease me about them. She noticed them as I was giving her a present (they've been like this for the past two years so why she noticed today I have no idea) and exclaimed they were "creepy".
Then, over christmas dinner, went on and on about how they made me look like a girly boy, which whilst hurtful (I don't esnt to be creepy), is really funny since she has no idea how close to the truth she really is.

First, I have to comment on how nice your legs and high heels look in your picture.
Your description is a lot like mine in that most of te time my finger nails are polished a clear likecolor from orly that is called something like natural pink? It actually just brings out the natural color of your finger nails. When I go out dressed up I will always polish my finger nails. I use a base coat, red polish, silver glitter and then a clear top coat. When I have my finger nails polished red and I go to different stores I do notice a lot of people looking at them nd a few have actually said how nice that they look. Some just give me a weird look. I hate it when I know someone is coming over to the house or I have to go to the doctor or something like that and I have to remove the colored polish.
Like you, I do try to let my finger nails grow out a little bit so that they will look more feminine and lady like. I am really wanting to get a set of those false nails and put them on. I am going to try to find one of those cross dresser conventions to go to in the next month or so and I WILL get a set of the false finger nails for that get together.

In male mode I use (daily) OPI Nail Envy Matte finish because I need a nail strengthener (long story of skin fungal infections). Tina uses the Nail Envy as a base coat and then uses color as she needs/wants it. Under the Nail Envy my nails are buffed to a shine.
The buffing is essential for a smooth nail, and a buffed nail (in my experience) dries much faster than a non-buffed nail. The Nail Envy goes on and dries in less than 5 minutes.
...She noticed them as I was giving her a present (they've been like this for the past two years so why she noticed today I have no idea) and exclaimed they were "creepy".
Then, over christmas dinner, went on and on about how they made me look like a girly boy, which whilst hurtful (I don't esnt to be creepy), is really funny since she has no idea how close to the truth she really is.
That was really nasty of her.
I'd ask her "I know you didn't realize what you were saying, but would you like it if I said equally hurtful things to you about some of your little peccadillos?"
Leave *which* peccadillos to her imagination. Everybody has a few thing that they don't want anyone else to notice!
The nice thing about being in our position is that we're actually more confident about our sexuality than most. Yep, I'm a girly man, but that concept no longer frightens me. It's much better to be girly than insecure!

I agree about the buffing. When I get my manicure done the technician also buffs my finger nails before she polishes them.

Over the years I have had my nails done by my hairstylist, my wife, my granddaughter, a female housekeeper, and myself. I always like them bright. But they rearly last long I always chip them right away or I remove them after one day. I tried clear polish when I was still working. I do not take the trouble much anymore. My fingures shake too much to do them my self. But when someone does my toes the polish does not come off until they grow out. Toenail polish once applied stays on even during medical procedures where the toe nails are exposed.

Well for nails, I'd gladly keep my toenails painted. It's easy to keep those hidden. As for my fingernails, I don't want to hassle with them much and certainly wouldn't want to wear them to my classes like that. I'd just give them a good buff, paint them, go about my business at home, then remove them before class. I'd go through polish and polish remover faster this way certainly, but awkward question would be avoided. Since I'm semi well known in the music department, avoiding those questions would be greatly appreciated.

I have also had several people do my nails but 98% of the time it is my nail technician that polishes them. She makes them so nice and pretty without any mess like I do some times. From what several people have told me the reason the finger nails chip a lot is because you are using them compared to just walking with the toe nails. What I mean about using yourfinger nails is that you do various daily tasks such as use the computer keyboard, etc.

The part about it that bothered me was she went to creepy straight away, not weird, or girly, or funny, but creepy, which sugests she sees any gender variance out side what she considers normal as deeply unpleasent and to be feared. Which is, alas, another dent in my confidence of ever comming out to my close fmaily.
In general though, I've found that even being out in the world as a man with sparkly purple nails doesn't draw any comment, even though to begin with you feel like everyone is staring at your hands.

I have manis and pedis done on a regular basis(a small Vietnamese shop). The tech who does my pedis, trys every time to get me to do a full set of acrylics. She's even told me that guitar players will come in and get sets for playing, cause their nail don't hold up. Even had her tell me I needed a brighter color. That's a good idea, I just had mine done at a salon and chose a very light cream color. You could still see my skin underneath and the white tips. It was nice but not noticeable, so I almost don't see the point. I thought about a light pink, something close to my natural skin color you see under my nails.
Hi have been getting my nails done at a salon for some time now and no problem at work my nails are the acrylic UV Gel pink & white i also get my brows waxed .

As I don't need to leave the house today I've just taken the plunge and painted my finger nails for the first time. I wear pink/white acrylics 24/7 no comments for the most part. I own the business so work isn't an issue. I meet with many customers every day and have had no problem with the exception of one , they weren't someone I would like for a customer anyway. It seems to not matter to most people ,most of our fears are in our minds. Toers are the same finish go for pedi and new acrilics monthly.

I will put on a coat of the base coat and then 2 coats of a red color and then a coat of the top coat polish. Usually when I polish my nails like this I will leave them polished for a week or 2. I do notice some peope in the stores that will really look at them and a few have commented on how nice they look. I especially have to polish them like this when I am going out on a date. I don't have to worry about how they look for work as I am retired.

I will just give you the advice that I gave my SO (who is also going through the same issues)...
If you haven't been doing regular manicures, chances are you need some nail therapy. Taking care of your nails is pretty easy to hide, but I think every man should be doing this anyway. Get some tools to give yourself manicures (files, buffers, cuticle remover, cuticle sticks, nail polish remover, etc.) and start taking care of your nails. Also, buy Nail Envy by OPI in MATTE. The matte version will not be shiny and you will be able to wear it out and about. Follow the directions of Nail Envy to grow out your nails to a desired length. (Obviously, not too long...but, long enough that they can be nicely shaped).
You can also do regular pedicures on yourself and have them in any color you want. Keeping up with painted nails usually requires me to repaint my nails every 3 days. So, after doing your Nail Envy process all week, you can paint your nails a color on Friday and remove the color Sunday night. On Sunday night, restart the Nail Envy process.

I go and get a pedicure and manicure about every 5 to 6 weeks. They polish my toe nails a red color then. They usually polish my finger nails a clear pinkish color. I do try to take care of my nails in between. I will file them and keep a clear Opi polish on them. I am trying to let them grow out but I notice a lot of times I will do something and break a nail and it is very frustrating to break a nail.
I am going to go look for nail envy as it sounds like it is what I need for my nails. Can you put on the nail envy and then put a colored polish on top of it?

I forgot to ask you something.
The edges of my fingers around the finger nails get dry or cracked or something like that. They peel, etc. I notice it especially at the edges under the nails. What can be done to help that?
I always wear nail polish with black or nearly black colours. I never paint my toes; why bother when you always wear boots? If anyone has any issue with my appearance it is more often that the majority of my clothing is black. Among the people I meet and generally associate with though, few people care about my public crossdressing. Most people are already aware that gothic males crossdress to some degree and just accept that it is part of the aesthetic.
Sometimes I let my facial hair and body hair grow but usually I am clean shaven and I have fairly thin eyebrows, long hair and pierced ears. I used to wear floor length skirts quite often but these days I am more inclined to wear band t-shirts and jeans because it is just more efficient. Some guys wear eyeliner or more makeup; I generally don't bother unless I am going out to a show or something because makeup takes time.
My wife could care less about having painted nails herself but she met me when I was wearing nail polish and all of the rest and we fell in love so there is no issue there. She was really upset when I shaved my head to cut off the black dye to grow my hair out again my natural colour.
I am an active member at a right wing Christian church and the people there are more concerned with the condition of the heart rather than the appearance of the body. Actions speak louder than words.
My workplace has no issue with my appearance but I think that has a lot to do with working in information technology. Geeks care more about your skill with technology than your appearance. The ladies where I work are more inclined to talk about nails and style rather than take issue with my appearance. I just present as a guy with a good handle on esthetics. Nail polish is a great conversation starter with ladies.
Keep in mind also that I am 32 and men my age and younger are painting their nails with greater frequency. At least in my age group, I have found that if I behave decently and with kindness, I get along with people and my style is a non-issue.
All that said, I never wear nail polish around my parents, my sister's family or my extended family because they don't like it and I love them too much to start such a trivial argument that is so easily avoided. I can always paint my nails again when I get home. And if my boss ever told me to take off my nail polish (unlikely), I would do so and start looking for a new job in my free time.
sadly for now mine are "open" as in nothing on the toes, need to clear up a problem. but my nails (hand) have clear on then all the time. and trying to grow them past the finger tips. they keep breaking, cracking, etc.
.
Breaking nails is badness. I broke a thumbnail today well below the tip. My other nails are a few mm beyond the tip. Thumb hurts and it'll take a month to grow back >:(. Pretty nails cannot be used as tools for anything or breaks happen. Oh why are they just so convenient for doing things?

Shouldn't matter if you do your job well. I've gotten many compliments on my usually pink or french tip acrylic nails.

Yep, nail envy can be put on like a base coat/under colored polish. Just let the Nail Envy dry before you put on the color.
For the dryness, I would try cuticle oil. If that doesn't help, try heavy hand cremes throughout the day and parafin dip treatments. You can get your own paraffin dip system for pretty cheap online. I have only and I notice thaty hands are extremely soft...but, I also use hand creams throughout the day out of habit.
