OK...

I know this may be me saying I am a retard (no offence to retards... if I am one I am now part of their community... and I shall embrace it!)... but... I am a muso.. ok serious guitar player... and I have always hated girly American Country music. OK I did cover some Shania Twain, and Emmylou, and that sort of thing but preferred Bonnie Raitt (blues girl)... great slide guitar playing!

But recently when dressed I have these songs going on in my head and I am thinking...WHAT! And they are what I would say are female songs... things I would have never have entertained before are now in my head!

Has this happened to others? I have a rehearsal with my hard rock band tomorrow... I need to stay grounded!

Not for me.

I'm still deeply influenced by very dark industrial as well as progressive jazz and classical.

Velvet Acid Christ, Cabaret Voltaire, Nurse With Wound, Current 93, Throbbing Gristle, NON

Well Kaz, I don't play an instrument, but if your thread is also aimed at whether we have different tastes because we are crossdressers, and do we listen to different music while dressed, or perhaps lean more towards a certain kind of music....then, no - my musical tastes have always been sort of 'female' oriented. By that I mean, I like a lot of stuff with female vocalists and I much prefer bands or singers that are female. I listen to the same types of music whether in drab or when dressed.

Oh My God Kaz!!!

Go quickly to You tube and type in Nurse With Wound 1138 and listen to the song "Words For The Dying"

This should remedy the situation.

Or NON with the song Total War.

I know this is a shameless plug, but I have nothing to do with them, just a fan.

ZZTop. Tom Petty. Bob Segar maybe the Eagles now and then.... but the country music thing just don't do a thing for me, unless I wanna pipe in the exhaust fumes on the truck and take a permanent nap.

Probably not a popular opinion, but one I share.

( From "Oh Brother Where Art Thou ?" ) ..

"Oh, Sisters, let's go down .. down to the river and pray" ...etc .. just beautiful!

It's a big subject, Kaz, and I won't go listing all my loves, hates and reasons why now .. I'd be up all night!

I'm a massive Rolling Stones fan .. but on New Years Eve I put on my "Prom" dress and grooved, grooved, grooved to Cindy Lauper .. :heehee:

as to the country girls .. well ol' Dolly Parton is certainly floating my boat these days :)

Don't give in to the dark side, Kaz!

I'm pleased to say Rachel's taste in music is the same as her male alter ego's!

Have you got a link to you band?

This band are mainstream biker-rock so it is AC/DC, Lizzy etc... but they seem to want to do it harder... The drummer is really into Pantera! The bass player is AC/DC... I just do guitar and sing!

Dolly wrote the theme song for Transamerica "Travelin Through"

And Shania's "Shoes," well, the girl can speak for herself:

Tell me about it...
Ooh!
Men.
Have you ever tried to figure them out?
Huh, me too, but I ain't got no clue
How 'bout you?

Men are like shoes
Made to confuse
Yeah, there's so many of 'em
I don't know which ones to choose
(yeah, yeah, yeah)
Ah, sing it to me
If you agree

There's the kind made for runnin'
The sneakers and the low down heels
The kind that will keep you on your toes
And every girl knows how that feels
(yeah, yeah, yeah)
Ouch, ah, sing it with me

[Chorus:]
You've got your kickers and your ropers
Your everyday loafers, some that you can never find
You've got your slippers and your zippers
Your grabbers and your grippers
Man, don't ya hate that kind?
Some you wear in, some you wear out
Some you wanna leave behind
Sometimes you hate 'em
And sometimes you love 'em
I guess it all depends on which way you rub 'em
But a girl can never have too many of 'em

It's amazing what a little polish will do...
Men are like shoes...

Some make you feel ten feet tall
Some make you feel so small
Some you want to leave out in the hall
Or make you feel like kicking the wall
(yeah, yeah, yeah)

Ah, sing it with me, girls
Ooh! (yeah, yeah, yeah)
Mmm..

[Repeat Chorus]

Some can polish up pretty good...
Ah, men are like shoes..

It's amazing what a little polish will do
Some clean up good, just like.new
Some you can't afford, some are real cheap
Some are good for bummin' around on the beach

You've got your kickers and your ropers
Your everyday loafers, yeah some that you can never find
You've got your slippers and your zippers
Your grabbers and your grippers
And man, don't ya hate that kind?

[Repeat Chorus]

I ain't got time for the flip-flop kind...
Men are like shoes!

Great lyrics....!

As the girl said (Bonnie R)... Let's give them something to talk about!

Has this happened to others?

Yes. I decided that I should femme up my musical tastes so have opened up a little. I have found that I really like Britney's Femme Fatale album. I am also listening to Girl's Generation (Korean) more often and have opened up to some poppy/dancy I dunno what you wanna call it stuff like Rihanna. But also... since I cancelled my gym membership since I am obviously no longer trying to bulk up, I have been dancing in my room almost every morning after work as my cardio work out. I want to lose another two inches and get my thighs down a little. I used to be really into weightlifting and was squatting 175 when I weighed 165 so now I regret the muscular thighs I have built up lol. Anyway getting a little off-track. So ya that is another reason why I have been looking for more dancable music. And it just makes me feel a lot more femme and I am sure puts off a femme aura to my co-workers when I am listening to the girly stuff at work hehe. I am just waiting for when somebody at my work starts to question me... especially with my manicured nails (just clear polish) and suddenly getting both of my ears pierced and my thin eyebrows and everything lol.

Oh ya and you girls should check out this song, Androgyny, by Garbage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVs6Fekh0RY&ob=av2e. I really like it because I think I look pretty androgynous right now with my short hair (it's growing!) but ya sometimes it's really nice because I feel like I am free of gender and it feels like my mind is just much clearer.

This may be a bit far on the hard rock side but try Jack off Jill, Scarling, and Kittie. Jack off Jill is kind of Like an all female version of Marilyn Manson. Kittie is closer to a Pantera.

apologies if i'm re-iterating something already said, but girl country... you need to investigate how darn right f*cked up some of the lyrical content of trad country is. dolly, loretta, tammy et al, all had songs - admittedly, partially co-written with the male of the species - that went into Hank Williams/George Jones/Lefty Frizell/Johnny Cash territory of lost my car/dog wife/truck/cheated on/cheated death blah blah etc etc.

that became rock'n'roll. that became prog. that became punk. that became etc etc. a heartfelt emotion brilliantly executed lyrically (perfect example, "Careless Whisper" by George Ugh Michael) is still right, no matter what the musical backing.

and it's quite awesome to see Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle name checked anywhere, let alone on a CD board!

As a male I'm a classical violinist, what is usually called an "accomplished amateur" although I certainly do play gigs for cash :).

We wondered how Tina was going to fit into all of this obesession I have with classical music, and it turns out she has taken the "classical" answer: she really enjoys playing the harpsicord! For those of you who don't know, the harpsicord is a precursor of the piano where the strings are plucked, not struck as in the piano. The harpsicord was often considered the "feminine" instrument and was often found in the female "quarters".

The mind is really an amazing thing, and finding out how my mind is split between its feminine and masculine sections is just fascinating!!!

Kaz, I think you should seriously consider proposing your band to cover this song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH475IxSMTs

^ ^
(Big Business also made a great version of that song --> here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umc4Uxs89CU))

and to help girl/rock your world, here's a quick top of my fave girls in metal <3
click the name to listen to a song on youtube
Witch Mountain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTgS7pLQp9I) -- classic stoner/doom firmly rooted in blues... calling all jams! Uta Plotkin's voice is pretty amazing.
The Gathering (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5PySbFS6Tg) -- dutch as Shocking Blue ^ ^ I listen to this band a lot. compositions and lyrics are so great. plus Anneke's voice is just. so. perfect. I was happy to see her live last year and I cried my heart out when she sang the song I linked :x
Battle of Mice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3v-b3-hLD8) -- Julie Christmas' vocals are as deep and insane. their only album is as awesome as difficult -- as in hard, heavy, depressive music. but it's worth the trip sometimes. this was a one-off project; also check out her other band, Made out of Babies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XMY4TMrxkg) -- way heavier, on the post-hardcore side. she also released a solo album last year, which included this wonderful ballad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuoM9f46c4Y) (aptly called "secrets all man keep")
Worm Ouroboros (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QT4GWuqqLY) -- atmospheric and touching, in the same vein of The Gathering, but with added doom and gloom topping. a basic trio, but with double (clean, beautiful) vocals by guitarrist Lorraine Rath and bassist Jessica Way
Landmine Marathon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdLAeARPdSY) -- grindcore featuring the voice of Grace Perry, the most beautiful woman to ever do death growls. watch their live footage: she's insane on stage. but the sweetest person out of there.
Grayceon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5yQysTxm_M) -- one of the best things that happened to metal in the last years... is a progressive power trio with a cello? oh, you bet. Jackie Perez-Gratz also plays on Giant Squid and Amber Asylum. <3
iwrestledabearonce (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xadbOTtzXc) -- "hipster deathcore" is not exactly my cup of tea, but I'll admit this band as a guilty pleasure. Krysta Cameron is not only cute, I love her growls!
Kylesa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgdqizS5wCA) -- power sludge with two drummers and a gorgeous blonde? win.
Galmet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1CZBbkiOAg) -- all-girl cute-japanese power metal. need to say more?

...did I just wrote all this? yeah, I usually get carried away on this subject :x hope something there catch your ears! ^ ^

I love listening to female singers, so much more so than male singers. I often dream of being that Sherrie Austin or Sunny Sweeney or Shania Twain...to dream of being female singing songs of the heart that are deep, feminine, meaningful. And do it wearing a dress. :D

Although somewhat outside of my "generation" I have always been a big fan of the Pet Shop Boys. Once, a female friend of mine commented that I "really listen to some gay music." Funny, I just thought they were good.

When you let your feminine side out for a breath of fresh air, you sometimes discover that you allow yourself to enjoy something that might not fit well with your masculine stereotype. That is entirely okay.

But for me, they've all been one and the same.

Love the Pet Shop Boys. Also love artists such as Heather Nova, Fiona Apple, Natalie Merchant. But I also listen to "metal" ... yet most of my favorite metal bands have female singers!

Examples: Within Temptation - Nightwish - Echoes of Eternity

C'est la vie!

Well I like classical music these days, but I wouldn't consider that particularly girly, I mean how girly was Hannibal Lecter. Anyway to me gender specific music is more about music and dance. I wouldn't headbang in girly mode, and I wouldn't Lambada in guy mode (well actually I wouldn't do either now, but I'm talking about my youth). There is a place where dance and music slip over into girly heaven, that is ballet. And you haven't lived as a girly girl until you've worn a tutu, the quintessence of girly girlishness. .

OK, my roots go back pretty deep, and my favorite female singers include Linda Rohnstadt, Emmy Lou, and Bonnie Rait. But somewhere in the mid-late 90's I just stopped caring about popular music. I'm not sure what happened. Guess I just couldn't relate to the stuff my girls were listening to - Brittney etc.

This thread reminds me of this movie for some reason:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZohbsqgklY

In the end, the two undercover cops that happen to be males end up kind of liking the "girlie" song.

Even though it's a pretty dramatized car scene, I can't say that I haven't been there doing something similar with my girlfriends to some stereotypical "girl" song.

But, I just really wonder about gender-influenced music. "Guy" music versus "girl" music. Isn't there just music that we like, or that speaks to us in some way? Or, is it that while you are crossdressed you are able to listen to music that you would otherwise get made fun of because it is not "masculine" enough?

In other words, do you Actually LIKE the music...or, are you just liking it because it's about being a girl?

Kaz
01-11-2012, 05:19 PM
Thanks Girls... some great leads (for me at least). Isn't it brilliant finding new bands/musical genres that you think are ace?

Kim, Bonnie Raitt may done some pop but she is a blues rocker! When I hear her playing slide guitar I melt!

Shanna's that is a girly song!

They all are great and yes I love classical too... my music tastes don't really change with dressing... let's face it... I just love music! Well... there is some that I don't... but there you go!

Just for Suzie... 10 days away... I will be playing AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Cream, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, etc.. and shredding my 73 Les Paul! Will the rock-chick burst loose?

kimdl93
01-11-2012, 06:47 PM
Kaz, I have to admit to being pretty eclectic in my tastes. I love Patsy Cline but also love Sarah McLaughlin. Of course Bonnie Rait, regardless of whether she's doing the slide or something more ballady. My favorite of her's is still probably Nick of Time, closely followed by Angel of Montgomery and I Can't Make You Love Me... And then, there's the other gender..,Beatles, Eagles, and Steely Dan are tops for me.

Kaz, I THOT this thread was going to be about music! See, music only requires 2 things. A melody and to NOT hurt your ears! Which eliminates MOST country and western singers! ALL rap! And, any singer that can't hold a note for longer than a split second!

My gosh! Beethoven must be rolling over in his grave! Oh yeah, the Beatles sang about that didn't they?

I would say dressing sort of opened me up to some new music I never would have listened to. Mainly Lady Gaga and Madonna. I guess it sort of had to do with the fact as a guy I wouldn't necessarily keep up to date with fashion or pop culture in general, but I would follow sub culture. I really like Lady Gaga and Madonna, probably becasue I like alot of other dance so I'm not really surprised I got into them. But really I'll listen to whatever suits my mood when dressed. Industrial, Techno, Ambient, Classical, Pop, Rock, Goth, you name it.

So far I have noticed no difference. Old school punk. 999, Blowholes, Stiff Little Fingers to name a few. Some new punk, Rancid and Greenday. Dropkick Murphys, Pogues. Acid jazz, bosa nova, some jazz, and meditation music. My musical tatses are all over the place, I know what I like when I hear it, and that doesn't change when I dress.

My god I so want to be her when I grow up. And one of these days, I will go out in my femme punk rocker outfit to a karaoke bar to belt out "I Hate Myself for Loving You." It's on my bucket list.

I'm not into country music. But for the past year have really been into the female singers of today. Lady Gaga, katy perry to name two. My taste had always been for the 70's rock. Boston, foriener,Pink floyd, The cars. My wife use to make fun of me that I wouldn't know the new music out there. Now I only listen to this music and she can't stand it and now she listens to country or what I call the oldies now the 80's music. I like the 80's music as well but I think I prefer todays music a little more.

Since I've learned about this "other person" inside of me, I've began taking inventory about who is into what. Music has always been a huge part of my life. My iPod literally has music spanning 10 decades. And I've played keyboards for almost 50 years. Another 50 years of practice and I'll have it down. :)

But after giving it some thought, I have been able to distinguish between her music and his. She plays classical, jazz and blues on the piano, and is pretty accomplished at it. He can't dance. When my wife and I try to dance we end up in a fist fight. Bouncers have to break us up, it's embarrassing. :heehee: She loves traditional jazz from the 20's and 30's. He likes hokey instrumental tunes from the 60's….”Theme to the Match Game”, “Baby Elephant Walk”, “Summer Samba”. She has started listening to Chill Out Lounge Music. He has listened to classic rock since it was just called......rock.

I have always found it interesting that when people list their musical preferences, more times than not, it comes down to a discussion about country music. I have actually heard people say "I love all kinds of music. I mean, I listen to both kinds….country and western". :)

Check out Artie Shaw’s arrangement of "Begin the Beguine" sometime. Or Dave Brubeck's "Take Five". Or Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. Then there’s Phoenix’s "1901". And she just can’t help cranking up Ke$ha’s “Blow” anytime it comes on the radio.

And don't get me started with Lady Gaga, the most fabulous cross dresser since......Elton John. I admire the hell out of her. Incredible voice, does her own music, is wild and crazy on and off stage, dances around without any clothes on. I mean that hasn't ever been done before.....well, not more than one or two thousand times in the last hundred years......but still. :heehee: And the best part about her.......she doesn't look like Elton John!

Leyna,

A guy I knew in high school almost got his ass kicked by Joan Jett at a concert.

I'm weird in that my musical tastes don't really change whether or not I'm dressed. Here's what's usually on my playlist....

Metal:
Opeth, Death, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Atheist, Cynic, Decrepit Birth, Suffocation, Exhumed, Decapitated, and Obituary. Basically it's a lot of old school death metal.

Punk:
Ramones, Sex Pistols, Misfits (Freakin LOVE misfits!!!), Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and of course my favorite local punk band The Morticians.. They're basically like the misfits...

Blues:
For me it's ALL about Stevie Ray Vaughan. I like Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters too...

Classical:
Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethoven, and Paganinni.

Shred:
Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Guthie Govan, and Paul Gilbert

Prog:
Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Rush

I try to keep it diverse, but I mainly listen to the metal and punk genre.
When I'm femmed out, I'm tolerant of pop stuff like Pink and Christina Aguilera, even though I won't go out of my way to listen to it, but in guy mode I start wanting to smash my head into a wall when it gets put on. I get that way in either mode whenever anyone puts on rap that isn't 2pac.

Anyone else into Celtic music, Step Dancing, and Highland Dancing? Chieftains, Tannehill Weavers? Nothing better to really burn off the calories than ten minutes trying to keep up with The White Cockade.

When I'm en femme I prefer listening to stuff like Rihanna, Shakira...sexy dance music, I guess. Not so much when I'm not en femme, but when I'm dressed up that type of music makes me feel sexier.
