My wife allerts me to everything she comes across on television that pertains to
transgendered/ transsexual issues. She really tries to be supportive and helpful
with my situation. Well this morning she calls to me too come watch a program where two young girls were disturbed about thier fathers transition. the program was the Dr Phil show. He was having a very tough time concealing how he feels
about transsexuals and I trully felt sorry for the poor transsexual father. Dr phil is a hater as far as I am concerned. I told my wife that he sells sensationalism and ought to do a show about the rate of suicide in this community. I am so steamed!!
He plants doubt in my wifes mind and is irresponsible in his approach to this subject !

We mainly see anti-trans rethoric in the media. In actuality, there are lots of trans people out there, but nobody knows that they are trans... and there are doing just fine. The 1 in 10,000 statistic is from the 70's. Experts estimates the population at around 1 in 2,500 nowadays. That means that your wife is encountering trans people at Wal-Mart, Price Choppers and at the hair salon, but does not know it. Whether or not your wife has doubts is irrelevent. You are the one going through this. Would you have doubts about someone's cancer? The hate speach sells and is part of the fear culture of the United-States. There is a lot of positive stuff too, but you have to look for it. It's your life, not anyone else's. Good luck with everything.

It's learned behavior to ignore the haters...

Dr Phil is a circus ring master..nothing more...He's Jerry Springer with a nicer suit. Don't forget that.

One thing that will help you is to be sure enough of yourself that you realize it truly doesn't matter anymore if no one believes you ...

Yes, I agree. Don't forget that Dr Phil is an entertainer, pure and simple. A hater? Who knows? I don't. But his show is ONLY about entertainment for money.

This is a perfect response. Dr. Phil, Dr. Drew, Jerry springer, Maury Povich, and others are Circus Side Show Carnival Slickers at best. I hate to say this because I do not want to offend but I question the people who actually watch this garbage. I would hope that we have better things in our lives than to watch this trash. Just look at the people who show up on these shows...what's that expression...Trailer Park Trash?

I would alter Kaitlyn's last sentence just a little by stating that, it does not matter what other people think, it's your life and your happiness.

I'm not worried for myself. I worry for those around me, those I care about. At the very least my desire for them is to have unbiased and helpful information. What they do with it is up to them

Traci,

My wife is the most supportive person in my life and rarely watches crap tv but if she stummbles across things
about this subject she wants to share it with me. Sitting in front of the tv Is really not that important to her.
She is way to busy and social for that kind of thing. One of the coolest people I know.

She should stop watching those shows, they will melt her brain.

Like most reality TV, they are partly scripted and when they are not staged, the people chosen to be on it are people who will bring ratings up. In some cases they are actors. I didn't see the show, but even if I did, I wouldn't be able to tell who are the actors and who are real anyway.

People appearing on the show also get prepped back stage. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Dr. Phil's people back stage instigated the unrest with the children. Show business can be quite heartless.

Stick to quality media, or better yet, science, which tends to be more reliable (albeit not perfect).

Yup, yet another one of Oprah's lackeys that got their own show. "Dr."??? I'd like to see his credentials and where (if) he ever really practiced. DB is more like it.

The study escapes me but I thought that 1 in 500 of transitioned TS was the more accurate number. That would make the transgender numbers to be as high as 1 in 250 by guesstimate.

Dr Phil gave up his license to practice a long time ago. What he does on TV is the shameful exploitation of people's problems....for the purient entertainment value. One also has to wonder, why are these people so desparate for attention that they'll air their personal problems on nationally broadcast TV. Like so-called Reality TV, I suspect that much of this is staged.

Whatever Dr. Phil is, he is not anyone I would talk to. I've never liked anyone that has that kind of attitude.

I can't remember which of Dr. Phil's predecessors it was, but one morning I remember one of the hosts of that type of show looking at his que cards and actually saying "We have crossdressers on today, must be sweeps [ratings] week."

Hugs,
Persephone.

Dr Phil aside, I'm still waiting for the first portrayal of crossdressers in any tv show that doesn't make fun of how they look, walk, or talk. It's painful that our stereotype is so awful, though I'm old enough to remember similarly primitive tv views of gays, Latinos, Asians, and African-Americans. our time will come.

I refuse to vote for a Mormon for our president. Does that make me a hater? To say Dr. Phil is a hater sounds a bit out there.

The estimate of 1 in 2500 M2F transsexuals is the number of SRS operations performed on US residents and citizens. The 1 in 500 is an estimate of all possible m2f transsexuals using other information available. Refer to the second introduction paragraph of this article (http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/TS/TSprevalence.html#Article)

This number also does not account for cross dressers, TV's and other TG's. If you include that, then the number is much less; like 1 in 250. Include any guy who has worn woman's clothes at one time or another and you are looking at a percent in the double digits. Now, add F2M's to the mix and include any woman that wears men's clothing and you are probably at like 75% or higher of the population. But yes, we are the freaks...

Again, the only precise number is the 1 in 2500 based on reported surgeries and male population in the US. Everything else is an extrapolation.

You will rarely if ever see these numbers posted on a show like Dr. Phil.

I'm a hater of Dr. Phil too but apparently he does hold a PhD.

Yes he does, from the University of North Texas. He practiced psychology through 1990, then found it more profitable to become a "hired gun" expert witness for tort attorneys. It was through this that he met Oprah Winfrey who provided the platform he needed to become an entertainer.

He was only licensed to practice in Texas and that license was "retired" in 2006.

So, basically he was a third rate psychologist/professional witness who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
