there would be no obligation to them renweing my contract. But I spoke to my friends boyfriend (who used to work there) and he said that the company have to give a reason for not renewing my contract and as such any anti-transgenderism reason wouldn't hold up in court.
Is that true?

Any definitive answer would depend on the contract details, but as a general statement, no-one has to provide a reason for not renewing a contract. Now if someone says something to you about gender, you have a toehold, but it's only that. You would still have to prove the discrimination itself (always a tall order), demonstrate its relevance to renewal, which is an entirely separate question and, of course, go through suing someone.

A fixed term contract is just that, for a fixed period of time. Having said that, you should review the contract to see what terms were given with regards to renewing. Better still, check it out with a union or CAB.

If a reason for non renewal is required, then the company have to abide by UK law which means they are subject to any anti discrimination legislation.
