Mine has got to be the classic 'Transformer' by Lou Reed.
Released November 8, 1972
Recorded August 1972 at Trident Studios, London
Genre Glam rock/Art rock
Length 36:40
Label RCA Records
Producer David Bowie, Mick Ronson

Not only is it a brilliant album in general, but the gender bending themes make it my personal choice.

Of course there is the universaly recognized 'Walk on the wild side', followed by the less well known 'Make Up', which was an important track for me as a youngster, the fact that a famous artist was openly praising us girls shamelessly gave me much solice.

"You're a slick little girl, yeah you're a slick little girl..." "We're coming out, out of our closets...".

So what albums/bands/songs with a transgendered theme have a place in your playlists?

I am what I am.

Sing along with me girls……………………..

I am what I am
I am my own special creation
So come take a look
Give me the hook
Or the ovation
It's my world that I want to have a little pride in
My world and it's not a place I have to hide in
Life's not worth a damn
Till you can say
I am what I am

I am what I am
I don't want praise, I don't want pity
I bang my own drum
Some thinks it's noise
I think it's pretty
And so what if I love each sparkle and each bangle
Why not try to see things from a different angle
Your life is a sham till you can shout out
I am what I am

I am what I am
And what I am
Needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the ace
Sometimes the deuces
It's one life and there's no return and no deposit
One life so its time to open up your closet
Life's not worth a damn 'til you can shout out
I am what I am

Its a great song - fun lyrics, great hook and rocks! But, ever since Weird Al's version came out, all I can think of is Yoda, Ya ya ya ya Yoda, Ya ya ya ya Yoda....

For me its:

Winter Wonderland ---Walkin' 'Round in Women's Underwear

Lacy things, the wife is missin'
Didn't ask, her permission
I'm wearin' her clothes
Her silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

In the store, there's a teddy
Little straps, like spaghetti
It holds me so tight
Like handcuffs at night
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

In the office there's a guy named Melvin,
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown
He'll say, "Are you ready?" I'll say, "Whoa Man!"
"Let's wait until our wives are out of town!"

Later on, if you wanna
We can dress, like Madonna
Put on some eyeshade
And join the parade
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

Lacy things- missin'
Didn't ask- permission
Wearin' her clothes
Silk pantyhose
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear

Wow! I want to be in that band, and I'm not a huge metal fan. :)

Thanks girls, there's some great tunes and bands in that lot, I wasn't even aware the NY Dolls were of our ilk. I tend to agree with you Talldrinkofwater, even though Lola is a classic, I've heard it too many times, but I love the kinks, Mr Davies is a legend.

Barbie, didn't you post that the other day on another thread? I'll let you off with a warning this time young lady! ;p :)

Sasha, I know the song, I never realised that's what they were about, I guess I was always too smitten with Shirley to notice?

Dead or Alive of course! Good music and really hot drag queen. Some 80s music I really like. In fact any glam rock is gender bending enough. Or at least redefines the idea of what gender is (for the time period anyway).

I'm in the process atm of developing my next musical project, I haven't quite sketched the outline of the idea yet, but it's most certainly going to be Pheobe's first outing into the world of music. I'm kinda thinkin' somthing along the lines of early Bowie/Ziggy glam rock, with a touch of house beat for the rhythm? But knowing my track record, it'll end up being the exact opposite.

I already have about 8000 fans on facebook, mostly from Thailand and Indonesia, so something with a trans theme may just be a hit in those asian countries where the trans scene is more accepted?

Ground control to Major Pheobe: It's time to leave your capsule if you dare!

I recently found this song by Suzanne Vega called As Girls Go:

You make a really good girl
As girls go
Still kind of look like a guy
I never thought to wonder why

If I could pull this off
Would I know for certain
The real situation
Behind the curtain

So beautiful
damsel in distress
Not exactly natural
Stunning none the less

What happened to you?
To make you more girl than girls are
Would you ever show or tell
Cause you're so good so far

You make a really good girl
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go

Let's chronicle
The dark side of the life
Did you ever keep the date
With the steel side of the knife

Doesn't matter to me
Which side of the line
You happen to be
At any given time

You make a really good girl
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go
As girls go

Well you should see Polythene Pam
She's so good-looking but she looks like a man
Well you should see her in drag dressed in her polythene bag
Yes you should see Polythene Pam
Yeah yeah yeah

Get a dose of her in jackboots and kilt
She's killer-diller when she's dressed to the hilt
She's the kind of a girl that makes the news of the world
Yes you could say she was attractively built
Yeah yeah yeah

I don't have any favorites, but a couple that some may not know of are:

The Montreal-based transgender indie/electro experimentalist just released their sixth album, I Can’t Keep All Of Our Secrets — an emotional electro pop exploration of grief and loss inspired by the death of a friend. Musically, it’s the former Calgary country crooner’s most electronic offering to date, a dance-floor friendly collage of heavily programmed production, analog synths and distorted electric guitars.

In addition to promoting what is arguably their best album yet, Spoon will also be publishing their first book, First Spring Grassfire — a semi-fictional, semi-autobiographical account of growing up trans in Alberta — in the fall, and the National Film Board has a documentary about the fascinating artist in the works.More at: http://www.uptownmag.com/music/features/The-evolution-of-Rae-Spoon-140032373.html

Rae Spoon - Ocean Blue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpPz1YNM_Hs) (trans artist, no trans content)

Cyndi Lauper - Ballad Of Cleo & Joe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybx6x8EiP4o) (At five o'clock he comes home to change
Takes him many hours just to rearrange . . . There's a woman in the mirror lookin' like a dream
And he works his body and he feels somebody And the working boy becomes a dancing queen)

and

My favorite song along these lines is probably Girls Talk, written by Elvis Costello and performed best by Dave Edmunds. I also like some of the older stuff by Cyndi Lauper and Gwen Stefani/No Doubt.

I mostly just like GG bands and girly songs. I like to hear girls singing about what it is like to be a girl.

Well you said music or band, so the band would have to be Chix. A Dallas based trans band.
Chix-rock.com
Kind of reminds me of an older trans-band, Temptress (http://www.temptressrocks.com/bio.html), although now the band is down to just one TG member. She's been around for quite a few years now. There used to be an all-TG band around here too called Transitt.

My favorite songs are As Girls Go by Suzanne Vega, Cherry Lips and Androgeny by Garbage, and I always felt that Strange Night by Heart was about dressing a guy up in drag, but they're never said one way or the other if it was intended that way. The Kinks also did a song about a CD called Out of the Wardrobe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj_f0Sdi3nk), always liked that one too.

Currently, there's an act called Evelyn Evelyn with Amanda Palmer of Dresden Dolls and a guy named Jason Webley and their concept is that on stage they appear as female Siamese twins with Webley in drag, an interesting concept, and not surprising, as Amanda Palmer is quite trans-supportive.

I got that CD right after it came out. About a week ago I heard a different song of hers on the radio and thought of As Girls Go. Put it on my ipod the minute I got home.

my fave TS lady in metal is Marissa (ex-Dan) Martinez from Bay Area grindcore trio Cretin. it's a killer band and she sure shreds! (say that three times very fast)

Keith Caputo from Life of Agony just came out recently too. now she's Mina (http://www.keithminacaputo.com/bio/). <3 unfortunately I'm not a fan of her most recent works, but I know she's been dealing with the transgender subject. This video is particularly touching -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9GhaCdLtd4

and also Wendy Carlos! A Clockwork Orange, album or movie, is very metal. lml

Well, there's that cool anti-uniboob song by The Offspring, "Gotta Keep Em Separated".
There's that Cyndi Lauper song about how you feel when you're wearing breastforms, "The Girls Just Want To Have Fun"
There the classic Beatles song, "Obladee Obladah, buy your own Bra! La la how their life goes on.."

There's lots more - you just have to listen to them correctly.

Roger Taylor looked so damn cute! I got to see Peaches and meet her backstage 2 years ago at a big festival I work at, her dancers all wore flourescent pink costumes with enormously exaggerated foam breasts that made Madonna's metal bra look puny. It freaked the hell out of a lot of the Tasmanian audience, but I loved it. Her music isn't my cup of tea, but as a live act, it was FAAAABULOUS!

I'll have to track down the pics and post them.

Actually, you need to go back a bit farther than that to get the original version. It's by the Replacements from the album "Let It Be" (1984). I suspect Joan Jett covered the Replacements version, not the Crash Test Dummies: Joan Jett and Paul Westerberg (singer/songwriter of the Replacements) did a duet that covered Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" in 1995.

I think all my favorites have been mentioned so I’m nominating Lady Gaga. She still needs to stand the test of time, but I think she has a good shot at standing in the company of the musicians already listed.

All in all, I think David Bowie pushed it farthest without wandering into Drag Queen territory.

Another that I like from Pink Martini

Bitty Boppy Betty

Bitty boppy Betty, bitt boppy Betty, bitty boppy Betty booboo,
On weekends she's your honey, then comes Monday, and that'll be sir to you.

Bitty boppy Betty, better known as billy, he's the up and coming local DA
A fearless crime fighter, political insider, sure to be mayor one day
But after work on fridays, off comes his necktie, and on come her diamonds and pearls
You better get ready, cause now billy's betty, everybody's favorite girl.

In the belly of the city, that's where you'll find betty, Friday to Sunday night
Is she working under cover, or just a fun mother, either way that's alright.

Bitty boppy Betty, what a bouncing beauty, so sophisticated and refined
She's a boy who doesn't show it, and though the guys all know it, none of them seem to mind
When betty starts a boppin, the joint starts a hoppin, she can twist and dance the whole night through
You really can't ignore here, and if you don't adore her, there might be something wrong with you.

On Mondays bright and early, Betty's back to Billy, working hard on behalf of our town,
Upholding law and order, talking to reporters, and keeping us safe and sound
If there's a moral to this ditty, it's not to judge Betty, Billy or anyone,
cause life's a lot richer with a healthy mixture, not to mention lots more fun!

Bitty boppy Betty, bitty boppy Betty, bitty boppy Betty booboo,
On weekends she's your honey, then comes Monday, and that'll be sir to you.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F47BUz5wJc Queen "I want to break free" There is a lot of gender bending songs, but these are some songs that are personal to me. Like Gwen Stefani "Sweet Escape" How about Jane's Addiction "Been caught steeling". Who remembers Boy George from Culture Club, or Pete Burns?
