So yesterday I was making a purchase in the local Radio Shack, took it to the counter and the clerk says, "You know that's a switch, Ma'am?". Quick look around, no one behind me, I say "Yes, it is". Carry on with the purchase and the clerk did not hint of his mistake but did not address me again.
I found this very wierd because I was dressed normally as a male, male jacket, absolutely no fem cues that I could see, and yet...
My hair is longish for a male but it is a male cut, so I just don't get it. If I ever get ma'amed it is usually if a waitress comes up behind me at a restaurant or something like that - almost never happens.

Some RS clerks act "superior" by trying to display their "vast" technical knowledge. As you observed it is more likely that they just stick their foot in it. I've had the same thing happen to me and I have >35 yrs working as an engineer; and I was en-drab with a buzz-cut then! Fun to watch them try and recover...
