I have spent the last couple days looking for a therapist online and I realized today that I do not appear to be any closer to finding one.

For those of you that have found good therapists, how did you find them? I am really making an effort to get things sorted out, but finding a therapist is turning out to be a daunting task.

Thanks
Candice

your best bet is to find a local TS support group and ask the girls there.

Not all are on the internet. I would try some local health service centers for the LGBT crowd. Portland appears to be a pretty open and tolerating city, so they should have some good therapists around to help you. You can also call some community hospitals and ask for recommendations, or names or those who are experienced in genders issues. The local university health care office may also have some contacts. The urnotalone.com website sometimes shows some health center contact info when you do a search for members where you live. Good luck and I hope this helps.

i got lucky on the psychology today therapist search site. lots of folks there claim gender issues as a form of expertise, and some are more expert than others. but it depends on what you want -- expertise, objectivity, advocacy, recommendation letters, etc -- we're all at different places. also, licensed sex therapists do more than teach married couples how to put the life back into their relationships - they also work with gender-identity clients and might be right for you...part of it is knowing what stage you're at and what you're seeking to explore in therapy. best wishes!

If you have an insurance, try asking the insurance company who they have contracts with and/or who they recommend.

Quote from Dr. Pettus's website : "My focus (and my passion) is with the LGBT community, though I certainly don't limit my work to 'family'! Rest assured, though, that my counseling is gay friendly. I work with all kinds of people from all walks of life and with all kinds of life challenges. Whether you're interested in individual counseling or couples counseling, I'd consider it an honor to work with you. My mission is to provide quality therapy at an affordable fee."

All of these that I listed past the initial one I found on Laura's Playground and are listed as Gender therapists.

Go and call.
