I have said before one of the things I have the most trepidation about is visiting the auto repair shop or tire store. In fact in the past I have dressed as male when I had to go there. Since it was pointed out to me by a few of the more experienced sisters here "if you are full time you don't go back and forth".

So yesterday my SO's 95 Windstar needed to go to the shop for bad wheel bearings on the front drivers side. I know this because for about 10 years back in the day I was a mechanic. I still have the knowledge to do the repairs but my back won't let me get down under a car any more. Besides that I don't have a press and really don't want to spend hours on the project. I took it to the nearest mechanic that was recommended by someone my SO knows. I walked in the front door and expecting the worst, was greeted with a "good morning Ma'am, Hiw can I help you". I indicated that there was a noise in the front end. Most likely wheel bearings and he offered me a seat and said he would drive it in a moment and see what he could hear. After a while he took the keys and went for a drive. When he came back he said "definitely a wheel bearing. Can I give you a lift home and then I'll call you when I get it in the air?"

A couple hours later he called and explained what it needed and we went back and forth over details and price.. At the end of the call he said "OK sir I'll call you when it's ready" OOPS

This morning he called and said it was done and I could come and pick it up and again ended with "thank you sir" DOUBLE OOPS

I went up to pick it up a little nervous (not sure why) and a little mad.

When I walked in I was again greeted with hello ma'am. I have your bill right here.
As we were going over the bill he asked "did you husband explain about the price to you?" Somewhat taken aback I replied yes he did, paid the bill and left. I was both elated and a little pissed.

I know I should just focus on the positive in all this as that's what's important, but I can't help but think that he believed that it must have been my husband on the phone because how could a woman know that much about cars.

Still I did check off a big one on my bucket list. I will celebrate that later tonight. Woo hooo!!!!!!!!!

Hip Hip Ho-ray! It sounds like you need to practice more on your voice. Having someone call you sir on the phone is a pisser.

The voice will out you every time. At least he used the correct pronouns face to face. What more can a girl ask for?

You brought up an interesting question, all things being equal will knowledge reveal or bring into question a persons past.

There was a Dutch Amstel beer commercial made along these lines where a man asked a woman a question in a bar about soccer because he and his two friends were not sure if she was GG or TG and her answer than answered there own question, rude commercial but interesting from a sociological perspective.

We betray much once we speak regardless of the sound of our voice, people stereotype based on the knowledge that you possess.

Your voice did not betray you, your knowledge did. Very interesting thread, Thanks Michelle !

Please tell me you know better than this Michelle. Your voice needs work, there is nothing wrong with that but if you delude yourself into thinking it doesn't, than you won't do the necessary work to allow your self further freedom. It's not a big mystery, you simply stopped monitoring your voice when you were talking "shop" with another man. It's muscle memory, you fell back into an old pattern. There is a lesson here, and it's certainly not that you know too much about cars.
