Tonight I was wearing my denim jumper (2" above the knee) with silver buttons, gold ear studs, a silver necklace, white slingback sandals, a long-sleeved soft cotton shirt, Chanel No. 5 and MY OWN HAIR!!! Also Sally Hansen "Airbrush Legs", but that's another story. My makeup was minimal, I hadn't even put on eye shadow.

I went to the supermarket, and two 30ish girls in line behind me struck up a conversation with me, chatting with me as though I were also a GG! :D I remembered to mind my posture and to use my "breathy" voice. ;)

Then I had to stop at 7-11 and got "Ma'am-ed"! :D

OK, it's entirely possible that they all clocked me and were just being nice. It doesn't matter. It was still THRILLING! *floating on air*

Love

Congratulations!!! Thats a cool adventure and way to go. You have to really be good at dressing, mannerisms, voice to pull that off.

Sounds like fun!

What is a denim pullover?

I thought a pullover was a jersey.

well THAT'S a nice step outside! Very nice, Rachel Ann. So what if it's not a night out in Casablanca? Look at the satisfaction it gave you. I think it's great.

In the US, a jumper is a dress that looks like this

This causes a lot of confusion on both sides of the Atlantic! :)

Rachel,

Getting out and being who we are is such a wonderful experience. Congratulations and I know you are going to be going out more and more.

I would say you were not clocked. On the slight chance you were, you were good enough for a gg to want to start up a conversation with you. Either way you can say you were a sucess in the way you presented yourself!

Shame on me for taking so long to thank all of you for your wonderful notes about this! :)

It has occurred to me since that the GGs at the Safeway might have started the conversation to figure out whether I were "real" - and succeeded. But I choose to continue to humor myself. :D

sometimes the more we try to pass the less passable we are ... and the more we just be ourselves the more we pass as ourselves ...I absolutely agree!

Way to go girl. I went out last week on a Friday afternoon. Just got in the car and drove. When I was pulling back on to my street I saw my neighbors in front of their house so I got scared stopped turned around and waited for them to leave or go back in the house. I admire you, and maybe one day I wont chicken out

Oh, you are all SO sweet! I do have a few unfair advantages from my early life (ages 17-25 or so):

1. When engaged in - er, um, - activity that you wish to keep others unaware of :p , you learn to blend in, to be invisible, to speak and carry yourself in a way that is exactly appropriate to the situation that you're in.

When en femme, that includes posture, voice and the whole "energy picture" for me. It's not unlike acting. (Well, actually, it is acting. Method acting.)

2. I came of age in NYC, where everybody is hostile to strangers, even people from the next neighborhood over. That helps you learn to be pretty thick-skinned with respect to how others feel about you, especially strangers.

3. When I became accustomed to getting the "hairy eyeball" (i.e., being regarded as a menace), I got my "what are YOU looking at?" stare down cold. Sometimes I can almost make people faint with a look, like Prizzi. But this is something that you save, it's a last resort for after you've been clocked and somebody is about to give you a bad time.

Love

p.s. Because of who is next door and their relationship to others in my community, I can't come and go from my new apartment dressed. A no-tell room at $60 per occasion was starting to eat me alive.

But, thanks to Jo-An at I Love It, I now have a lightweight, waterproofed ankle-length coat with a big hood. It will conceal everything but my shoes, which I can change after I get in the car. :D (I can also defer hair and lipstick so even if someone sees my face from any distance, they won't notice anything. :) )
