I dont usually dwell on the whole ma'am thing, unless improper pronoun use is clearly meant to be insulting. I had an experience this morning that really caught me (pleasantly) by surprise. I am in Charleston, SC on business and went out for an early morning run along the Battery. I was wearing compression shorts, running shoes, and a fitted underarmor T over a sports bra. No make up (running with make up - are you kidding?), just a couple simple rings and small necklace, and my natural hair is really short. I finished my run and was walking back to the hotel along a narrow sidewalk, all sweaty and gross and passed a man, probably in his 30's at close range. He casually glanced at me and said very pleasantly, "'morning ma'am",

After returning the greeting i actually had to stop and look in a shop window to see what he saw. It must be the boobs and decreased bulk, because i looked like a hot sweaty mess otherwise! It sure did make me smile inside, though!

He just saw the woman you have become....someday you'll see her too...but now you're still seeing the "guy" looking back at you from the mirror. I had WLS surgery almost 5 years ago and even after losing 140 lbs some days I still see that "fat" person looking back at me. Take the compliment and bask in it...if a southern man gives you an unsolicited ma'am, you DESERVE it!

It just goes to show that you're gotten to where you want to be...a woman, whether sweaty mess or your usual gorgeous self.

Ah! Nothing more feminine than a sweaty, stinky woman without make-up!

Congrats! If you don't think you pass now, you never will~!

I think Deanna is right. The changes have been so gradual and i have spent a whole life seeing a guy in the mirror that that is what i still see, unless i am trying otherwise. Its nice to not have to try as hard. As Stacy said, i am having to work harder at looking like a guy when i have to. I am guessing that i dont come off as very macho whatever i do, being down to 158 lbs, gloss nails, arched brows and the outline of a Spanx cami to smush my boobs showing thru. After all, though, thats the point of all this!

S'all good! I get Ma'amed all the time, but each time is just as surprising as the last. It always feels good :)

Just had a 15 minute call with a job recruiter and it went really well despite my manly voice lol... He never slipped up and called me sir or anything :)

You will get to the point that getting "ma'am" ceases to amaze as it becomes just an everyday part of who you are. When you were in "guy" mode, did you get all warm and fuzzy when someone said "sir?" Of course not! Same will happen here.

After all, isn't it the desire of all of us to be just simply accepted as being a "woman" with no conditions or labels?

BUT until you get there Bree continue to enjoy and marvel. OK "ma'am?"

My voice is my biggest challenge. But you should feel good about yourself Renee... I like to say "Perception is reality" in this case it clearly was. And whatever you look like at that moment.. you feel you are a women and you behave as one. That in and of itself makes is whats most important. Ive held back on doing my eyebrows.. I just think it will be a dead give away when Im in "Guy mode" am I over complicating this?

Yeah, I don't know WHY it marvels me so much... probably because I still don't have that great of self esteem. Heck, my BF still feels good when people call him sir... and unless he looks in the mirror, he forgets just how much of a man he really looks like. He's very handsome and people are always shocked to find out he's trans... we've both been transitioning for roughly the same amount of time, but I've never seen him look anything like a girl in the two years I've known him. He's far luckier than I am.

I love bad food too much. If exercising can't keep me in shape... I'm just gonna have to be a fat girl.
