Got my passport today (with correct name and gender marker) YAY!
however, it expires in 10 years. I thought they were only good for 2 years prior to SRS.

The funny thing about bureaucracy is that sometimes the mistakes and inefficiency work in your favor!

Congratulations! The passport is the gold standard for IDs.

Congratulations! Policies may have changed. In any event what you have is great.

Be careful they know who you are now! :D

10 years, you can't ask for anymore than that.

It is 2 years with a Psychiatrist letter stating you are STILL transitioning and 10 years if the letter states you have completed transition (no mention of SRS is required).

Congratulations, April!

According to the Transgender Equality website the rules may have changed, "Under the new policy, you can obtain a full ten-year passport with an updated gender if you have had CLINICAL TREATMENT determined by your doctor to be appropriate in your case to facilitate gender transition."

Enjoy!

Hugs,
Persephone.

Hey congrats !!

You can thank Pres. Obama, they changed the policies at his request. Now the letter must state certain things, but you do not have to prove SRS.

Thanks Obama. Now cover my surgery and I won't mind the real estate transaction sales tax as much.

That is great!

I have a question maybe someone here would know - if you get the 2 year passport but fail to get SRS within that time frame can you still get another 2 years passport when it expires?

I think so, although it would require a new letter. The gov site doesn't specifically address this:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_5100.html

NOTE: for those interested in getting one, the link above has an example letter at the bottom. Have your doctor follow those words !

I have a question. When do I get my BC back!

Maybe they will screw up and fix that too:heehee:

BTW, did you apply for BOTH the Passport Book AND the Passport Card? The card is great to carry in your wallet/purse for ID.

Just the book the card seemed pointless since its only good for land crossings, I'm a pilot!
