Hi All,
I suffer from acid reflux issues. I moved my Spiro dose up from 25mg to 50mg as I work my way to the does my endo recommends. It could be total coincidence, but I am having some heavy reflux issues that started around the time I moved up the Spiro dose. Has anyone had such issues? Thanks!

I had very occasional acid reflux for years, too seldom to be worth thinking about treating.
Since I have been on HRT, the acid reflux has been getting a lot worse, and is now to the point where if I skip my pill for one day, I will know it by the next afternoon. Minor things like a small package of salt-and-vinegar potato chips are enough to give me acid burn.
I was just finishing up with Spiro and switching over to cypro when the problems went into high gear.
But it is hard to say: I am taking enough other things that it could be one of them instead. For example, could be an effect of the anti-depressant over the years, or could be an effect of the anti-cholesterol.
It seems pretty certain that my body is producing a bunch more cholesterol now that I am on estrogen, and that cannot be ruled out. The symptoms I was having did feel much like I'd heard other people describe for their gall-stone (cholesterol accumulation!) problems.

I would call my pharmacist or doctor in your position. Reflux pains are surprisingly like cardiac arrest pains.

Thank you both for the info. I just had an echo stress test and came out ok. This is definitely reflux related. I stopped the spiro for a day and felt a lessening of the symptoms. I started it again this morning and the reflux started acting up again. But I will be talking to my endo about it. Thank you both again for your input!

I had an operation about 15 years ago to treat GERD. It wasn't medication related but the GERD had started to cause damage to my esophagus AND trachea. I now have permanent laryngitis.
So, don't let it go on too long before getting an opinion of what is the cause of the GERD and the remedy.

Joan Honey,
You are eating too much cooked food. Switch to fruit and salads and raw nuts. Eat only one cooked meal a day. Plus drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water. Your acid reflux will go away, permanently if you stick to this.
Good luck, sorry you are not feeling well.

Much of what we suffer from that is termed acid reflux can be mediated with proper diet. Coffee (caffeine), chocolate, alcohol, spicy foods, many carbonated drinks, cooked tomatoes, SMOKING (anything), all contribute to reflux disease.
Our modern diet is REALLY bad for us.

Hi Joan!
I had acid reflux long before I started low-dose Spiro so it may or may not be connected in my case.
But I did find this site (click here) (http://www.ehealthme.com/ds/spironolactone/acid+reflux) that says that 20 out of 17,000+ people who reported side effects (and they, of course, are a small number of those taking Spiro) reported acid reflux. That is just a shade more than one per thousand of those reporting side effects of any sort. So you may be in an elite minority!
Hugs,
Persephone.

I also cannot eat oranges, mint, cabbage, or many types of meat because of acid reflux and IBS. If you can deal with lower doses of spiro, it might be better for your body, and if you can't... You may have to cut a few things out most of the time!

Mint adversely affects some people with Acid Reflux. Here's a link that talks about it. :)
