Some countries have optional genders on passport applications also.

The high school my son attends sent home an information sheet to be completed. Address, phone, etc. Then it asked for his gender. Surely (don't call him Shirley - haha) they wanted to know his sex. Some folks don't know the difference.

I prefer when the questionnaire asks "Sex"...I just put, "yes thank you".

Good answer.
When they ask for "length of residence" I put "40 feet not including the garage"

"When is your birthday?"
"September 14"
"What year"
"Well every year, of course"
I love the grammatical absurdity of the questions on questionaires or interviews.
Or when the headwaiter asks "Do you have reservations", the best reply is "Yes but i'm eating here anyway"

To stay on topic, you are so right. I cringe every time I see "gender" when what they mean is "sex".

True story: my wife is Asian. After our son was born, a lady was completing some forms, and asked some questions including: What is the child's race? I answered: half Caucasian and half Asian. She said: pick one.
Sorry - got off topic.

Interesting topic. For those of you who would have written "other", what would be your reasoning?
If you are transgendered, that usually means that your the gender with whom you identify does not correspond with your biological sex. So if you're biologically male and you're transgendered, then you would select "Female", and vice versa. So putting "other" would denote that you don't really identify with either gender, or you're somewhere in between, or you consider yourself part of an alien race.

I recently had to fill out a form in a medical office and under "gender" they offered the 2 usual choices as well as transgendered. I chose that one. Of course this clinic has a large LGBT client population so that is expected.
