I have been walking alot of variuos trails of trails since I live an hr away from college. I am down 25 lbs!. I also tought about walking early morning figuring it would be a bit less busy I want to walk in my skirt to say, hoody and of course my wig (if it ever gets here!) I figured a skort would be my best option since I could quickly flip the skirt part up to expose "short" if I felt any threat coming my way. But then if I at least resemble a girl a bit maybe it would not matter so much. I do live in heavy redneck area and I have not yet experienced a bad experience. I think maybe I am overconfident that they will just walk by me without any problems???A good idea or should I just go some solid colour such as black girl shorts. I really like the openess or "freedom" of a skirt though. amanda:)

The weather has started cooling down in Canada so for my morning walks with the dogs, I wear capris to cover my knees and keep them warm
Let us know how the skort works for you

All you need to do is ask yourself, " If I read in the morning paper a woman was assaulted while walking on the trails wearing a skort.............." and you thought to yourself, " well, what did she expect, a welcoming party?", then you might want to consider wearing whatever everyone else in the neighborhood wears while walking on the trails. Otherwise, go for it.

Wear a Hooters outfit if that is what you want to wear.
And carry a boat whistle around your neck.
Problem solved.

It sounds like the walking is doing you a lot of good! The main thing is your safety! What ever you decide to wear it may be wise to have some potection with you! Pepper spray comes to mind! Good luck!

I do live in heavy redneck area
Here we go with the "redneck" comments again. :thumbsdn: If we want people to accept and not stereotype us, we can't be doing it ourselves.
As for wearing a skort and turning it into "shorts" at a moment's notice, have you ever seen or worn one? The inside (the "shorts" part) doesn't really look like normal shorts. A skort is not really a skirt sewn over shorts, it's more of a skirt with a sewn in slip that has two pieces, one for each leg. It's just for modesty.
Go to the store and examine one if you haven't already.

I doubt that you have much to be concerned about, particularly on morning walks.

My experience with denim skirts is most people don't seem to notice. They are the same length as shorts and made out of pretty much the same material. When the weather is warm and I dress casually I wear skirts more frequently than shorts.

Well, I got about what I thought for replies, support for and against. My major concern in all of this IS safety and I am not talking about remote trails 4 in the morn.
As for skorts I probably am not that familiar with them enough, but my wife has a few and it looked like the flip could be done. I will check out a very few soon as the summer clothes stuff is on sale. I was going to go with that Thirt/sweat shirt material type, but JohnH has a good idea. I was looking at some shorts on sale and at first I thought they were the denim skirts, from a distance anyway I do say they would be hard to tell apart. :)

I walked most of Hadrian's Wall wearing a 'hiking kilt' ( AKA a cheap unlined womens knee length skirt from a Scotch Plaid store in London) and regular guy everything else. The only trouble I encountered was the foul mouth little brats, and mean that in the nicest way, in Carlisle. Otherwise, all I can say is its insanely comfortable hiking in a light weight kilt. If yours looks kilty enough like mine, you might be mistaken for a crazy scotsman instead.

I never thought about raising the skirt part, but from my experience, the shorts in mine tend to ride up. That would defeat the purpose for you. When the legs are in their proper place, they tend to look like biking shorts. However, some are also more like panties rather than shorts. That wouldn't work at all for what you need.

Never thought of that. This area was heavily settled by Scotish. Matter of fact the local High School Band the guys wear the kilts.
By the way, I just tried on a few of my wife's skorts and it does appear that the ones she has anyway could be flipped and the end result look like shorts. The skirt is only a inch or so longer than the short. I have seen some that the short part would only be a modesty part.
My primary goal in all of this is to start to get out in public a little bitsys at a time and to build my confidence and comfort level. I wear a denim mini almost all the time on my farm. I think someone would have to get real close (which is unlikely) to tell, but I know that I will be seen sooner or later. I seem to care less and less if that happens as time goes on. My wife really does know. DADT:) Amanda

I thought doing it that way at first (fipping if necessary), but a skirt is really what I NEED. I know I need to ease into this...

I can understand your desire to wear a Skort while hiking, but I've hiked more than 300 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and my observations indicate most genetic women wear cargo shorts or pants, the same as men. The extra pockets are the important items, not style. Sometimes a wig can get very warm and sweaty when hiking in warmer weather, and as a tip you might consider a clip-on ponytail which you can thread through the rear of an adjustable ball cap.

I have several skorts in two different styles; one style has a skirt look in the front only, and the other style looks like a skirt front and back. The shorts part underneath is made from a stretch material in both styles.

If you've already tried on a skort, you can judge for yourself if it could be disguised as a pair of shorts whenever another person is in view.
If you're going to spend the entire time worrying about turning a skort into shorts everytime someone comes along, I don't think you'll have much fun on your hikes.
Personally, I have a couple of skorts my wife gave me but I would much rather wear longer skirts. Skorts feel like shorts so what's the point?

If you look online you can find various cargo skirts. They come in Khaki, denim, camo and other earthy colors. They have various pockets and pouches and most people will never notice that they are not shorts.

Our first instinct is that it would be better if I went out when no one else is out. However, that means you are sneaking around when others might be sneaking around. It means that you will be out when there are few people to defend you, when bad people have less to hold them back from saying or doing whatever they want to do. With that said, we all sneak around like this. I took some night walks around a lake in a park in a skirt. Night walks in a place like that in any clothes was dumb. Later I took morning walks. Normally, I would only encounter two or three people per morning. They said hi and went on. They sometimes glanced back. I found that the same people took the same walks every day. Normally, I was wearing girls' clothes with my man head. At the start, it was shorts and nude hose. Later it was a skirt that had shorts under it. I could pull the skirt up and look manly enough. Eventually, I would wear a skirt true black skirt and dark hose. This was the outfit that earned the glances backward after passing people.

An early morning nature walk in a skirt sounds like heaven to me. I still havn't gone out in a skirt, just jeans. Working up to doing it on halloween. I understand you need to stay safe and look after yourself, a skort sounds like it would be good. You go girl.

Just wondering if at first you got nervous and how often pulled the skirt up? Anyway I decided against a skort. Well ... I went skirt shopping today. Not much left in the stores...summer clothes put up. I then went to 3 Goodwill stores and took my time looking at the skirts. Last store I picked out 5 I thought would fit according to the size tags. I went into the dressing room and tried them on. DO IT, TRY THEM ON!!! when you go shopping! Luckily the camo mini one fit just perfect, 3-4 inches above knee. I got my walking skirt! I am not sure but I think from a distance it is not going to be noticeable at all, just not sure how close it will be notieable. I just need to find that comfortable park, time to walk and do it noticed or not. I am thinking early morning, but broad daylight. I am waiting for the wig and then go in girl mode. Amanda

Can I please point out there is a MAJOR difference between a redneck and mountain men.
Rednecks chew tobacco, speak broken english, and have either old rusty trucks or very nice jacked up trucks. they tend to look forward to hunting season and nascar than anything else.
Mountain Men are the creepers who attack people in the woods.
I'm a proud redneck and how offended we get about what people call crossdressers and trans people something offensive, it is just as offensive being called a predator because i like to hunt and love driving my truck through the mud.

Did you know?
It's virtually Impossible to solve a red-neck 'crime of passion'.
First: All DNA matches.
Second: There are NO dental records.
I'd really appreciate it if you didn't make jokes. It is impossible for people to have matching DNA. Do some rednecks marry family members? yes. But that does not apply to all. It is honestly very offensive what you just said. I don't know what I did to you, but I feel what you said was unnecessary, especially since you posted the same "joke" two times in a row.

I see...and what you wrote would no offend my TN mountain folk? Hmmmmmmm?!?

Just quoting you.
Yes. I said that because when you do hear of that tyoe of stuff happening, it is a "mountain man." In Idaho on my trip to Boise for a football game a few years ago, there was a big to do about a missing woman and they ended up finding her in some mountain mans shack in the woods.
