I would be inclined to agree with suzy on that but there are pockets of place's in big city's that are OK if you are not alone.
I get the feeling that there are the two extremes in the USA place's where it is very acceptable and place's where it would be completely none acceptable , I think if you are sensible in what you are wearing then most people will leave you alone .

CDing will be accepted/not accepted worldwide depending on the people and their acceptance of folks viewed as "outside the box" ......... I accept,my son accepts and many of both our friends accept .........

I am from wales UK!! i went out clubbing in liverpool last weekend dressed up and did not even get a wink..!! no one bothered me at all.. had a great time..

so yes there is places to go and no go.
