View Full Version : Does the vehicle matter?

If this baby could pull my 35' travel trailer while the back end is loaded with all my hunting and fishing gear like my ol' Ram 2500 - it would be mine in a heartbeat. But even a girl has priorities :heehee:

I like to work on classic cars for a hobby, and one of the cars I have is an 85 Corvette. I bought it for a song, but it needed body work. Now it just needs paint. I've been considering pink. Like a Barbie Corvette. I'm not out of the closet, but a car like that might make me get a pink baseball cap and a pair of womens sunglasses and head out for a drive. Oh to dream...

A while back one of my guy friends was floored by the fact that I do not have a dream car. Every guy is supposed to have a dream car, but I have never even really thought about it. Ever.

It's possible there has been an indirect influence, I have only bought one car from a male salesperson in my life, all of the others have been female. I just relate to females better. So that might have influenced my choices some.

The one car I bought from a man was my current one, which is a Civic hybrid. Had it since 2007, not one problem I have had to pay out of pocket for. I love that car!

Cynthia, Is AMC allowed? I just love my '73 Gremlin. It's Maxi blue. Kind of a bright blue that was a factory color. An annoying bodystyle with an annoying color. But it gets more attention than the Corvette. Besides, it was made in Wisconsin, and so was I. Just a year between us.

I can't get over someone admitting to having a gremlin LOL. That's almost as bad as a pinto isn't it. But I can't say much I've had 2 vegas. Didn't learn the first time. As for now if it can't pull my boat I don't want it.

A Gremlin with a 390 is pretty bad a$$
I had a 69 AMX with a 390 and it wasn't a slouch.

Cynthia Ann...... Last time I checked American Honda Motors was the forth largest auto maker in AMERICA. By ignoring them you might put someone out of a job here. They have plants all over the U.S.
A little research just might turn up a " Made in U.SA" sticker in the darndest places.

Go kick a Yugo... You have my blessings :lol2:

I only wish I could fit into some of the 'girl cars' that I've wanted over the years. In high school, one of the girls' boyfriends bought her a black and gold Lotus Europa (a real live racing car that was adapted to the streets). Later on, I wanted a Mazda Miata, but simply couldn't fit into it. Oh well. Right now I'm the 'dentist's wife', and driving my Porsche 928. The hottest cars were designed for people much shorter than I am. Dream car? Ferrari 599. But I'll have to hit the lottery to ever buy one of those. And yes, I'd buy one in pink.

I've never allow personality or fashion dictate the kind of vehicle I drive. My only concerns are cost, functionality and can I fit behind the drivers seat. But my favorite car of all time was a 1969 Datsun 2000. Wish I had it today!

I drive a pickup truck. My wife drives a sedan. When we are together we usually use the sedan but I drive. If we have to haul something, we take the truck. I don't really think of a vehicle as an extention of my personality. Maybe it is though, they are both "practical" vehicles and suited for their purpose.

One think you might want to consider if you're a closeted crossdresser but out and about - If you have a distinctive vehicle, people may recognize it and wonder who is driving "your" car.

I've thought about it, but just can't let that affect the type of car I want. I have a 1998 Nissan truck for hauling things and work around the house.

I just gave my (previously my wife's) 2003 Toyota Avalon to one of my brothers. Best car I've ever had, especially loved the response of engine to transmission when stepping on the gas. It had 206000 miles on it, so it was time for a new one, even though it ran like new.

I went with a 2012 Cadillac CTS AWD. Figured it made a good grandpa car ;)

Maybe when my daughter is out of grad school, I will be able to afford it.

If I owned a car, the Honda Fit ( as in the picture ) would be on the list, but not pink.

If I won the lottery, I'd get something in the practical, but street sleeper category. I'm thinking, VW Phaeton, and send it over to HPA motorsports in Vancouver, have them order in a V10 diesel ( available in the European model ) and turn it into a wagon. Huge space, comfort, handling, performance ( 600 ft/lb torque! ) AWD, classy, but slightly bland styling to avoid attention, yeah, that's the ticket!

I have thought about getting a more girly ride. Maybe a small red something-or-other. My current ride is a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with 465 HP. I've also added a more throaty(louder!lol) exhaust, so I can't sneak up on anyone with it! So much for flying under the radar. But that's OK with me. I want people to see me most of the time. One thing that keeps me from the small car is I wouldn't have nearly enough space to haul all my shoes!LOL. NO, SERIOUSLY. My other ride is an 89 Mustang LX vert with a 306, Flowmasters with a Dr. Gas X-pipe, and a 5" cowl hood, in a deep cherry metallic paint.

Has your feminine side dictated your choice of current vehicle?

A little, but the features did come first.

After 10 years with a 5-speed subaru- I bought a 2010 forester XT, and later added Whiteline anti roll bars- less sway in the corners; Cobb tuning ignition control and downpipe, and sticker tires.

The Forester is very popular with the female population... and the turbo model is rather a sleeper. With mods- 0-60 in less than six seconds. Not a race car, but not slow. The torque peaks at 2800 rpm stock, i usually run the ignition close to this- i lose a few Hp on the top end- but the torque at lower speed more than makes up for the hp loss.

Add in the 9 inch ground clearance, full time all wheel drive, and Subaru's reliability- this is a serious luxury car. Reliability is high on my list- so it qualifies as a luxury.

Rarely goes below 18mpg in rural fast driving- even doing multiple 0-120 runs...

I set up both the built in moving map gps, and the portable Garmin Nuvi so i have two ranges of maps- makes it super easy to zip through rural roads i've never seen before- ad still be aware of small roads intersecting ahead.

In the new model, the rear seat volume is much bigger, the sunroof is enormous in area.

And it has decent front seat room as well. Allows for a quick change in the car, if you get my drift.

And when it snows- turn off the skid control- and zip around in 4 wheel drifts, never even needing the top half of the rpm range.

Bike goes into the back without even taking off the front wheel, good usable volume.

It is very practical, & this somewhat feminine, and does not excel in any one area- but is does most things very well, no fuss, and starts every time-- something highly valued by the feminine populous.

Wow i didn't know that there were so many automotive enthusiasts around the forum!

That's great :).

It's nice to see everyone's different views on what would be their perfect feminine ride.

I currently drive a Nissan Quest, but I think the ultimate car for both male/female mode would be an Infinity G37s.

Although I am an import person, I do appreciate the American classics. I've always had a liking for mustangs hehe

I see I am not the only Vette girl here. I have a 2003 50th Anniversary edition, black and red. I love it, as I tell people, it is the only thing that keeps me sane some days. Of course it is a very noticable car, and I used to worry about what people would say if they recognized a girl driving "my" car, but I am out now and it is still my car, LOL. As for girly versus manly, the Corvette can go either way, so that works for me. I am a tall girl, and it has an amazing amount of legroom, plus you can get a huge amount of "stuff" in the back. Of course I have a bunch of vehicles I would love to own, a few more Corvettes, a Ferrarri (the classic Magnum PI version), a Viper, a Mustang or two, even a few of the two wheel variety (I used to ride a lot, loved it, then I got married). Are we seeing a common theme here? Yes, I love sporty, fast cars, always have. I have owned a slew of trucks, minivans and station wagons, but they were all "practical", not what I wanted for fun or pleasure.................Stephanie

Well,I built and drove nothing but hot rods ('29 Essex and a custom '46 Chevy) up until I went public with Paula .Even then I was a real hot rod girl until I had to sell off my '29 .... my estranged wife has the '46 now (sobs ).So when the '46 sells ,no more old cars in the immediate future;so I presently drive my '04 Highlander SUV.However once I settle in my new place in Alberta;I may look around for another old car to drive.Depends on the state of my finances and a place to keep it.I must say in all truth that it really makes no matter to me what kind of a vehicle I drive;as long as I'm enjoying my rebirth.

To me a vehicle is a necessity, not a male/female thing. I use my Dodge Ram for hauling boats, trailers, and tools, and my SO uses her Chevy Trailblazer for work also. The best part is we pay cash only for cars.

If you live in the US support the US. It’s real simple. I want to put my money into American jobs. Wouldn’t touch a foreign car.

My feminine side didn't dictate my choice of vehicle. My fiancee, however, did...so perhaps it is my "feminine side," from a certain point of view. :)

She wanted a Ford Taurus, and ONLY a Ford Taurus. So what do I get? A Ford Taurus, of course...a 2011 model, which is big and cushy.

I don't mind driving it as Amy, though. I've even driven it in heels...well, ankle boots with heels, anyway. :)

I just borrowed a friend's full-sized 4wd Ford pickup over the weekend to move some office furniture and stuff. As my wife and I were getting in it for the first time I mentioned "how difficult this would be to get into with a skirt on". She just shook her head but it's amazing/scary how much I catch myself thinking of the fem side of things.

Regarding the jingoism in a few earlier posts...and I'm not pointing fingers as I used to strongly feel the same way...but a few years ago my wife drove a Chevy, which was assembled in Canada, and I drove a Nissan Titan which was built in Mississippi. So much for 'American-made' based on brand name!

I don't like taking my truck when enfemme (Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab long bed - way too much of a guy's truck). Not to mention, something about stepping out of my truck crossdressed as Nicole with a personalized plate that reads '1SIKPUP' is a little too labeling for my liking. I usually take my wife's SUV (Chevy Equinox) if going out as Nicole.

I drive cars in the evening shuffling inventory for a rental car company - pretty much driven everything from a Toyota Prius, Lincoln Towncar, to Escalades, Suburbans, & Lincoln Navigator. Of everything I'd driven, if I was to buy a girl mode car, I'd probably look into something sporting the a Mazda 3 or 6 - zoom zoom - great zippy girly cars.

ChelseyD

KymmieLorain,
I understand yours and ChelseyDs patriotism to stay "Made in America" (as I feel the same). But to focus on too narrow of a picture will allow us to forget where the real meat and potatoes of the solution is. Not just "workers getting a dollar or 2."
(Base wages average about $28 an hour. GM officials say the average reaches $39.68 an hour, including base pay, cost-of-living adjustments, night-shift premiums, overtime, holiday and vacation pay. Health-care, pension and other benefits average another $33.58 an hour, GM says.)
It is true Honda has a return of profits. But not all of the profits go to Japan. Its "principal owners" are also everyday Americans who own stock in the company. Those profits stay here. As I said before, it's American plants labor who are Americans - living here, spending here. It's advertising dollars (2011 - $600 Million) gets spent here. Utilizing the infrastructure here that needs to be maintained by American workforce. Etc. etc.
The amount of residue profits ending up in Japan is very very small compared to the monetary impact America benefits from this type of arrangement.
As much as I would like to believe Jeep is totally American, one must remember its not.
For example, while Jeep's Patriot may be built in Belvedere, Ill., its transmissions originate in Mexico, Japan and Germany.
You think most of the electronics in Jeeps are made in America? Sorry. They had to slow down production when Japans tsunami took out major electronics plants. And the list goes on.

Domestic parts content labels, required on all new cars since 1994 as a result of the American Automobile Labeling Act, denote the percentage, by cost, of U.S. and Canadian parts in a given model, as well as the final assembly location and country of origin for the model's engines and transmissions. If you're looking for a car with high domestic parts content, U.S. assembly and U.S. sourcing for the engines and transmissions, you'd get a different list:
• Toyota Avalon: 85 percent DPC, built in Georgetown, Ky.
• Honda Crosstour: 80 percent DPC, built in East Liberty, Ohio
• Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator: 80 percent DPC, built in Louisville, Ky.
• Buick Enclave/Chevrolet Traverse/GMC Acadia: 76 percent DPC, built in Lansing, Mich.
• Jeep Liberty: 76 percent DPC, built in Toledo, Ohio
• Chevrolet Corvette: 75 percent DPC, built in Bowling Green, Ky.

Sorry to kind of take the thread off topic, and I really didn't mean for anyone to run out and buy the Fit Hatchback because it was so fem. I just wanted to open a lighthearted thread about what we drive.

We recently traded in my Dodge Durango when my wife got a new car. I then inherited her light blue Mazda CX7. at first, I thought I may be a little embarassed, as it is a little more femme than the Durango. But, Cate feels right at home in it, so my other half no longer cares and actually is happy Cate won't have to drive anything too masculine!

Has my feminine side dictated my choice of current vehicle? Well, I don't really know. I drive a 1994 white Mazda Miata. Some people think this is a little girly car and I must admit it is tiny ... but I'm not sure how girly it is. Here's a pic of my actual car.

This is my 1957 Ford Fairlane that I sold to a guy from the next town over. I owned the car for 12 years and it has ran like a dream but lately the cold moist air of the east coast USA has made thinngs a little challenging and expensive, and I do not have a garage with my house, and my neighbor shares my driveway, so I didn't put up the 20X10 Quonset style car tent these last couple of years because of the ice & snow that accumulated at the base of my driveway.
....maybe someday I'll buy the car back. However, boats are on my mind these days. I drive a an AWD Subaru Outback which magically allows me to cut through snow on 90 degree vertical roads. :D

Mimi and I took a look at a Fit the other day and were quite impressed. Interior room was quite good for four tall adults and the cargo space was huge. Honda's engineering expertise shines in that car. The design is clearly superior to the Ford and Chevy competition which is pretty good for a four-year-old design. We're likely to buy one.

Fits are made in Japan, so owners are less likely to find Bubba's beer bottle rattling around in a door. :)

Debbie's first car was a 1984 Mazda RX7 GXL. It was styled like a lotus, a two seater, and I wasn't half way to the red-line at 230 in 5th gear.
I eventually lost it in a flood, but by then I realized that the only women who would ride in a car like that were women who wanted to charge me by the hour.
After that I went with a Mazda Protege then a Ford Taurus, and now a Mercury Marquis.

The car that got the most interest from the most women was my 1980 Ford LTD. Women loved that there was room for their kids, their friends, AND room for lots of shopping bags or groceries in the trunk.

I haven't owned a car since 1987. My wife has and still does, but I was born in a truck, and will be buried in one! LOL

I always had thoughts of the Small BMW's being girls cars, but I bought a 323 convertible, several years ago, before Bobbi made her appearance.
This along with many other things show me I have always been this way but didnt know any better.
However the Vettes, and trucks are for my other 1/2. ;-).

My wife has a Mini Cooper convertible, with body-kit. Mine is a Mini CooperS Countryman all4.
Our cars are both economical without resorting to nasty poisonous diesels :)
Also not too big to be thought to be compensating for something......

No, not in the least. I have been a car guy since the mid-50's and have attend motorsports events all over the country; asphalt and dirt, road courses, bull rings, superspeedways, open wheel, sports cars and stock cars. Choosing a car for me is based on 3 things: performance, family needs and money. It is a fact of life that compromise is often required. Some of the more unusual and/or interesting cars I've owned are:

'72 Honda 600 Coupe
'70 Lotus Elan +2S
'75 Fiat 131 Brava 2-door
'84 VW Quantum 4-door wagon (Audi 5cyl)
'90 Nissan Maxima SE
'09 factory John Cooper Works MINI Clubman
All were purchased new, except for the Lotus. Engines covered 2, 4, 5 and 6 cylinders. All had manual transmissions; 4, 5 and 6 speeds. I've never owned an automatic.

The MINI gets high marks for stealth. However, underneath the skin is 208hp that results in 147mph and 0-60 in 6.7sec. Plus, we just got back from Michigan and it ran 32+mpg, cruising at 72 to 77mph with 2 adults and luggage. Works for me!

And here it is (bonus points if you can identify the location!):

Can't beat the Mini, we took our old CooperS (2002) to the south of France, fantastic wee car and you can get a helluva lot of good Provençal Rose in the back too ;)

I'll give a positive vote for the Fits. My wife has one and it is a nice little car. It handles great, is roomy for its size, and is solid. The downsides? Well a car in that price range isn't going to have a real potent engine and it doesn't. It is good but I have to merge onto the highway in a short distance and going uphill and I have to really pay attention to get in safely. And if they haven't changed it since 2008, the cloth on the seats really attracts lint. Two thumbs up from me.

My friends say I need to get another car; I have a F350 DRW V10. It is a little interesting getting in and out with heels and a dress, but I think it's kind of hot to see a "chick" behind the wheel of a big truck. I have a Miata, but its in FL. If I were to ge a new vehicle, it will probably be a Jeep Wrangler...unless I win the lottery! 911 GT3 RS, Z06, DB9

The first car I bought when I was 16 I still have, a cute 1970 VW beetle. I have a Chevy 3/4 ton diesel truck for the drab work mode. But my fav is my red 1982 Corvette, fast and sexy fun.

Hey Marlene... great choice... and I love the driving with the top down.

I have a 2001 Jaguar XJ8 in a teal color over a cream interior. I think my daughter in-law read me before I started dressing, she asked me why I had such a fru-fru car and dog (Bichon Frise). I also have 2012 Honda Civic in case I actually have to get somewhere. Hugs Jaymee

My 2010 White Ford Ranger is the most nondescript vehicle on the road. Nobody notices it and it does everything a truck should do. Roll down windows and AM FM radio. I love Ford for offering that vehicle for all of these years. AND THANKS to the post about the hybrid. My wife bought one against all of the naysayers advice and we love it. That's our girly car. No boyz allowed.

When I got my MINI Cooper I was always asked why I bought a girl car, but that never crossed my mind when I picked it out. I got it because it was small, cheap on gas, handles great, and built better than most all the "throw away" small cars. I wouldn't trade it for anything, it's the perfect car for a single person and city driving.

I consider a car an item of transportation to get me from A to B reliably with good MPG. Therefore I am on my second Honda Civic. I bought it for my wife and never bothered taking her butterfly seat covers off when I started driving it, after she upgraded to a CR-V. I used to own "American" cars and trucks (Chevy, Dodge, Buick) but they sucked and broke down constantly. I bought the Dakota brand new and it was nothing but a nightmare from a reliability standpoint. There are days I miss having a truck, but only needing it a few days a year doesn't justify owning one to me, especially with a 25 mile commute each day.
