View Full Version : I get to dress as a woman for 1 day at work, is this mean spirited?

Its a fund raiser. If everyone under me brings in a certain amount, I have to dress as a woman for a day. But its more to humiliate and joke and see how funny I will look.

Is this not discriminatory in a way? Or is it not

If you replaced "dress as a woman" with dress as a visible minority, you can see what I mean.

I see what you mean. But what strikes me is the possible pressure placed on employees to bring in money, whether it's money raised from others or donated themselves. Not everybody likes to solicit donations, and not everyone can afford to give that certain amount. It's another kind of discrimination.

Well if this happens go to a make up artist to look your absolute best before you go into work. I can't see a problem if your look is clean, pretty and your not wearing a S!ut outfit.

Its only a couple of bucks and most of the people already have the required amount. The cost is spread out over many 100's of people so it works out to $2 a person. SO money is not the object

But I have to be at work at 8. Can I get make up put on and sleep in it?

I do hope you will go dressed presenting as the best possible representative of our group, even if they will have no idea. It is mean spirited, and indicative of how little society thinks of our situation. They are uneducated, many are unfeeling, and many more are haters. I hope that when you do this you will be well received and not subject to any derogatory cmments that may make you uneasy.

Hugs, Barbara

Out of curiosity, how did this come about? Who suggested you should dress as a woman? There must be some history that we are missing. Are you 'out' to any of the people? I suggest, since this appears as a done deal, to solicit the assistance of a female co worker to assist you with the makeup and hair styling. Ask her to come in early and do your makeup. It should not take too long to change from male to female attire. I read in a previous post you're not into wearing dresses. For this occasion I would suggest wearing a dress and heels suitable for a business environment.

Be prepared for the employees to whip out their cell phone cameras for this event. Company newsletter?

Have fun.

I wanted to dress a little ****ty or provocative! Knee high purple striped Thigh High Stockings with black Gogo boots, a short ( a little above the knee) black dress with a Sequin tank top, glitter on my face and purple lipstick.

There is no history, the women of the workplace decided this and though we would have fun with it. They also have to dress as men.

Money is always the object, or this event would not be happening!

No, you can't sleep in makeup. You'll have to do as a GG would by getting up earlier, depending upon how long it takes to get ready.

Now, my propensity would be to do my best to present in age- and job- appropriate attire such that I would be mistaken, at least at first, as a GG colleague. Of course, this is dangerous if you are worried about someone thinking that you do this a little too well! Most men who participate will probably treat it as "Dress Like a Hooker Day" or will make only a token attempt at it so my blending approach would, ironically, stand out a bit.

As others have suggested, enlist a GG to help you get made up, if you're unsure of your technique. As for attire, I agree with Eryn, go in an age and business appropriate style. You really should strive to look as professional and put together as possible. Give them their money's worth!

Sounds like this could be fun! Your coworkers may look at this as a way to humiliate you, but how you handle it is completely up to you.

This is really a great chance to wow them. Do your nails nice, shave your leg and other hair (if you don't already) and plan a kick ass outfit that will knock them out, then tell everyone how much fun you're having. If you go through this with confidence and presence, you'll get the chance to send a real message about yourself.

I hope you embrace this chance, Frillee, you never know when you'll get another one like it.

I'm with Stephanie on this one. By enlisting the help of GG colleagues and wearing clothing similar to what they wear to the office you will "Legitimise" what you are doing. Dressing a bit tarty panders to the stereotype that CD'ers are all gay drag artists or a bit strange in the head.

Do your hardest to dress age appropriate and look sharp.
No over the top trashy stuff just do your best to look better than the most attractive female employee there.
They may even offer you a new position, did you consider that. :)

You need to tell us how this fundraser came to be. Who suggested it? Do you not want to do it? Why are you comparing it to dressing as a "visable minority"? What is a "visible minority" anyway?

Im not sure . do your coworkers know about your dressing? If so knock their shoes off. Id go dress appropriate to your work surroundings. My coworkers knew of me dressing and one New years eve we use to always hang out at a casino lounge for the night. I went fully dressed up and got so many compliments. It may be better to met them someplace away from work that way management cant say anything.

If I got the chance to do this, I'd grab it with both hands. I wouldn't go ****ty, but I'd go about 20 years younger than my age (I'm 68!), certainly dress or skirt suit, but as near drop dead gorgeous (for daytime) as I could get; heels too, but not too high. And go around as though you own the place, if you're the boss, maybe you do!

You must tell us how it went, with pictures.

On that last question...what is an invisible minority?

The OP used the term "visible minority", I was asking what she meant by the term.

As for the term "invisible minority", I have seen the term applied to hearing impaired people. One cannot see their impairment and they are a "minority".

Back on topic, I'm having trouble understanding the original post and was hoping the OP would explain it better.

It is common to have fundraisers in a lot of places that are designed to slightly "embarras" the person who has to participate. Such as shaving a head if such and such team wins, and various other things. You can get all in a fuss about discrimination, or take it with the spirit ment, which is to have fun. I agree with Erin and others, dress your best for business. A nice dress, heels, wig and great makup. No you can't sleep in it, just get up early. Looking great will shock the h out of them. And carry yourself like a woman all day........grinnning inside because only you know how much your loving it.

What an opportunity.

First I don't think this is a bad thing intended to degrade any group. I think the juxtaposition part makes it fun for folks. If you were old - dress like a teen, If you were a teen, dress like an old person. My theory doesn't work for "dress as a guy" because it's so simple and so many women already dress as men every day.

Don't go trashy. Get help to do it right. Day time outfit, make up and accessories, not club or evening gown. Age and setting appropriate. Look great. Get a great wig. Be classy.

Good luck. Can't wait to hear how it goes and to see some pics.

Just my two cents: do not pander to "conceptions" - dress for success!!! start now and find a GG or makeup artist who may help with early morning application. This is an opportunity to represent yourself as to your concept of CDing.......if you need to pander to the "provcative" presentation-that is your choice...however, dressed to the nines as a working woman(office that is) is the better presentation......you will also feel a bit moer comfortable throughout the day

You will not believe this, I found some breast enhancements ($15) that look like silicon forms and a wig at value village. Got a bra and a glitter x-mas top. I want a short glitter skirt, the kind that is popular for the holiday season. I am going to wear glitter on my face and in my hair. Getting a manicure too!

So dress to the nines and enjoy yourself. They might think this was going to a fun silly thing. But maybe its time to let 'her' out into the real world.
Do your best and you might be on a new road to happiness.

If you go ****ty and glittery I see this not working out well at all.
Go classy and stylish you could pull it off. Put your fetish to the side for this deal is all I'm saying.
Involving a GG girl in the process of make up is a smart plan.Maybe have another help you pick out a nice outfit.
She isn't going to pick out anything trashy because she has her reputation on the line.By that I mean other women will give her grief over a bad outfit choice.

if it were me i would have on a cute skirt just below the knee, and a "basic" pastel blouse, under a lite grey or black jacket. two in heels (black). and hose.

modest length earrings (i like dangles) and short neck-less. a bangles bracelet. (i like the jingles).

of course my good wig and proper make-up. if i could arrive a bit late for work or get a early appt time get it done by a mak-up pro. (yes for this day i would spend the bucks).

just right for a day at the office.

but what purse to have....???

I'm with Meghan, go kickass. Kickass does not have to be ****ty. I have a high waisted black pencil skirt and high collar white blouse that when paired with the right heels. . .well, you get the idea. The skirt is below the knees (which is quite unusual for me) and the blouse covers everything and is not tight. With good makeup and nails, jaws will drop honey. And anyone who wants to joke or ridicule will be reduced to ash.

Go slow with it, let them know that you are enjoying yourself, and let the cameras snap. Among hundreds of employees, someone is going to be jealous of you.

I dont think the tone is to dress as a "visible minority"...it's just a laugh for charity and I doubt there is any mean spirit behind it, exaclty the opposate in fact.

Try and go looking as femme and kickass as possible, floor them with your looks and enlist a couple of GG's you know are skilled in things like make-up and style and get them to prep you. :)

If I was to do this, I think I would dress work appropriate but slightly upscale. No glitter or miniskirts. I would follow the company dress code, but try to out do the women in the office with upscale office fashion.

It would probably raise eyebrows though to show up in expensive clothing for a one-off stunt.

It's only discriminatory IF THEY KNOW you are TS ... if you are CD, then, it's kinda busting your balls a bit.

But ... take the opportunity ... and do the best job you can. A visit to a professional makeup artist would be well worth the money for this! MAYBE YOU CAN CONVINCE THEM TO DO IT MONTHLY!!!!

Ultimately, it is your choice if you do it and how you dress, regardless of what other people think. However, I'd really think twice before you bring your dressing into your workplace. While you could probably get away with it, there is always a risk people may start to wonder... are you sure you can deal with that? Things can hard enough in a workplace without the risk of that hanging over your head.

Christina Horton

Ok. Everybody will be expecting you to dress like a hooker. So shock them and dress to look as best as a REAL women. Walk talk and be a women for the day and don't break the lady like day. That will floor them more then if you dressed as a ****. If you need to wear glitter do so only lightly. Believe it or not but less is more. You'll have way more fun if you do it as if you've been dressing as a women there for years.
Just my 2 cents.

Last year about this time I dressed for a fund raiser. It was an adult prom and I tried to look the best i could, with professional make up and the works. I acted as myself not at all femme, and it was a huge success. I helped raise over $1000. So if you do it have fun with it and don't worry about it.

If you get along with any of the GG's offer to help them dress as a man if they help you dress as a woman. If you give them good ideas they may also suggest you do more, like shave your underarms, get a pedi... This should be fun and you haven't mentioned them suspecting you so go for it. When I would dress for halloween I always tried to do little things that would be noticed only by some. Like piating my toes but wearing peep toes with hose or wearing a toe ring or anklet. Please let us know how this goes.
