View Full Version : Estrogen patches provoke a taste?

I have noticed that if I have gone a bit of time without my estradiol patches, that for a bit of time after I put new ones on, I get a sensation of taste towards the sides of the middle of my tongue. The taste always reminds me of copper, even though I would not say it was necessarily the taste of copper.
It used to be that it took well over a month of going without the patches before I would feel the taste, but these days I get the taste after 4-5 days without wearing the patches. There is a possibility that the difference in timing is related to the fact that I have not been taking any anti-androgens for several months, so the estrogen is in a sense having to "work harder".

I wouldn't be surprised. Almost certainly it's the carrier that the estrogen is put in to make it absorbable. I don't use estrogen patches, but I've experienced it with other things. Some chemical they use when I do the plasma pheresis gives me a metallic taste as well. It's amazing how rapidly it appears.

Since patches are placed on the body, I am not sure what would cause them to create tastes in your mouth? I've been on patches for 7 months and have not been more than 5 minutes without one on. Why would you want to go periods of time without a patch on?

The chemicals start being absorbed into the blood stream fairly quickly, and can reach the taste buds through the blood supply. willnotwill is correct that the taste can develop fairly rapidly; in my case, unquestionably in less than a minute.
Going without patches does not happen to have rapid effects on me, so I do not have much of a body reminder if I forget to put the patches on for a few days. I can end up going without for longer periods because patches can get in the way sometimes. In particular, I have weekly massage concentrating on my lower back and hips and upper butt... right about the same area where patches usually go. They interfere with the massage if they are there, and if they massage right over them then the patches fall off. So I end up hesitating: "I have a massage in two days and it would be a shame to waste this patch.... I'll put it on after the session. Okay, not then, as I have physio on the area two days later..."

I am guessing you are not pregnant :battingeyelashes: but changes in estrogen levels can cause dysgeusia (metallic taste in mouth).

Hey, cool! I knew I wasn't imaging things!
It has not been a problem for me; I just found it interesting. I noticed it the very first time I put on a patch, along with a feeling of a "rush", somewhere in-between heat and prickling. Which I got again last night along with the metallic taste.

I have been on Estradiol patches for a bit over 3-months now and have noticed no similar effect. Then again I have a terrible sense of taste and smell so it would likely not be noticed by me. The main effect I have noticed is a calmness and "mellowness"; much appreciated by my wife as well.
