Just got through watching the show "Whitney" and the story line was about her sister transitioning to a male. The actress playing the transitioning role was so UNconvencing. She did not walk like a guy or have mannerisms of a guy and made no attempt to be like a guy like someone who was really transitioning would. While the story line had everyone being accepting Hollywood did not do their homework on this one, in my opinion. Did anyone else see the show an have any thoughts?

Maybe that is how F to M people start out.
Put the shoe on the other foot and some of the M to F actors don't do a good job either.

I did not see the show so I cannot comment on it. It would be nice for a TV show to be as realistic as possible while still maintaining a positive image. It sounds like for the most part that was done, but the character could have been more masculine. Comedies tend to take more liberties with the most likely scenarios or truth for humor sake.

I know a few post-op transwomen and almost everything about them scream man. Just because someone is transitioning or has transitioned does not automatically mean they have all the mannerisms and appearance of their transitioned gender.

Hi Michelle, Hollywood likes to bend the truth a lot.

I'm watching the episode right now. My first thought would be why would she have to travel fro Chicago to New York for hormone treatment. Last Sunday on the Simpsons Helen Lovejoy's MTF sister apparently got hormone shots in Springfield.
Other than that I thought they handled it pretty well.

One other thing, I know I don't have all the female mannerisms down although I've been working on them.

Personally, I think that Whitney is a dumb show that is geared mainly towards teenagers and young 20-somethings who are part of the texting/facebook/twitter crowd and typically characterized by little substance and an even shorter attention span - just like the show itself. So yes, featuring that transitioning sister is probably part of the show's attempt to stay hip and trendy. Then again, maybe it has already "jumped the shark" and is desperate to create a buzz by being more edgy, and this is one attempt to do so.

Either way, not doing their homework and treating this serious subject in a superficial way is pretty much in character with the show itself. What I find especially irritating about it is the fact that the lead actors are so full of themselves that they are forever cracking up at their own jokes. News flash, folks - Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, and Tim Conway you ain't...

I just finished watching the entire episode I think they did a very good job with their homework. Actually they seemed to take the subject pretty seriously.
Let me point out some things.

-the sister did say she was going to see an endocrinologist.
-the phrase hormone replacement therapy was used.
-when they met the doctor the doctor said she had talked to the therapist
-the doctor went over possible complications, the consent form was 10 pages long!

other things I like

Whitney checking out the doctors diploma's " I would like to see a Harvard" I like that because my HRT doc went to Harvard Medical School
Whitney's husband giving his new brother-in-law the perfect gift-a new shaving kit.

It would be interesting to see if this would be a continuing story line so we could see the transition.

Here is the best picture I could find online of Whitney and her sister.

I watched this episode last night and while they did handle a lot of things well from a medical perspective and how people handled it, what took me out of the episode (and I commented to my wife about it during the show) was that is seemed like her sister still looked too much like a girl to be starting hormone replacement therapy.
Typically, wouldn't a person already start the "physical" transition well before starting the hormone therapy?
For example, I'd expect a FTM candidate to at least start dressing and looking more like a man first - in this episode, her sister still had long girlish hair and wore girl clothes.
I always thought that the first step in transitioning was to start living, dressing, acting like the other sex for a while before you start any of the medical procedures.
Am I wrong about that?

you and I are on the same page. I thought anyone transitioning FTM would be wearing guy clothes and and acting more male. That is my point. Maybe I expected too much from Hollywood. They rarely get reality. As a conservative, hunter, they have anyone who uses guns as idiots and rednecks and they don't know how people who actually hunt and carry guns act in real life. Why would a person as a cd or ts be any different?
