View Full Version : Saturday is the Big Day

Well, I looks like it's finally going to happen! The coming Saturday my Sweetie is taking me to get my first pedicure.
She has patiently suffered thru months of me agreeing, then changing my mind......Do I ask for polish..or not?.....Have it done in our small town, or go 50 miles to a much bigger city? These are but two of the questions I dreamed up.
So this is how we're doing it
1: We're going to stick with a small town (but not the town we live in)
2. I'm going to intentionally leave a small amount of polish in the edges of my toenails. This will inform the Tech of my wishes without actually asking.
3. Sweetie told me if I back out one more time she's withdrawing the offer to escort me.
I realize that lots of you are probably thinking i'm creating a lot of "DRAMA" over a simple pedicure, but i'm really nervous!!!
I'd love for some of you that are a bit braver to share your stories of your first mani or pedi

question. Why hint at what you want? The tech is going to ask anyway.
Your SO is very patient. I would have withdrawn the offer the first time...c'mon, wishy washy gets nothing.
My first manicure improved my golf game by three strokes.

My advice is to not be afraid. Times are hard, and the only hint of color you need to worry about, and the only one they'll care about, is the color of the money in your wallet. (Should be kind of an ugly shade of green.)
I can appreciate your nervousness - but they won't care. And if they do:
1. They'll take your money and do it anyway
2. What do you care what they think? :)
Best of luck and have fun! Don't chicken out - I'm jealous already! :p

Enjoy it and have fun! Ask for exactly what you want.
All of my mani-pedi experiences have been good. My only suggestion would be that it is one of those things where you get what you pay for. You don't have to overspend but generally you get better service from a higher-end salon than a no-name hole-in-the-wall place. Depends a lot on where you are and reputation, etc.
Best of luck to you.

Well don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to "butter up' the Moderator, but I've read many of your posts, and often wished I was as bold as you!

The first time my wife and I went, I was very nervous. But pay a little extra and get the leg rubs with all the good smelly stuff. It was wonderful. I had them put on clear polish. Go and have fun, many men have it done now a days. Now my wife will ask me all the time. Every time I look at my shiny toes, a little feeling of satisfaction flows through me. I even took a picture of the girl doing my toes and put it on Facebook. So many of my friends said they have been wanting to try it themselves
always been wanting to give it a try

If I can lose three strokes for a manicure, how many will I lose for a complete makeover?

I agree with Lorileah, don't hint, tell them what you want. Hinting will get you things you don't want or nothing at all. I understand the nervousness though, every "first" is a bit nerve racking, just go with the flow. Your Wife will be right there unless you chicken out again then you'll never know.
Stacy gave the best advice though, go clear the first time till your comfortable, and if you brave enough, an eyebrow waxed might not hurt if needed ;) I wish you luck!

If you are going to get color, why not go in with color? If you are getting color you are going to be asked out-loud what color you would like, whether you hinted about it or said plainly you wanted it.
Ore you trying to play out a little drama where the tech "suggests" color and your wife chimes in urging you to do it, and you "reluctantly agree" "to be a good sport" ?
If you want color but don't want to be asked out-loud, you can take your own bottle of polish in.
Relax and enjoy the pedicure. Tell the tech exactly what you want. Be honest, polite, courteous and a fun client. Also tip her well. She will love you for life.

If...you suspect they speak a foreign language at the nail spa...look up on Google and learn how to pronounce: "Good morning!" And "I want red!"
Grins all around.

Danielle,
Your sweetie has supported you for awhile, I think it is time to stop being a girl and support her.
After all she wants to see you as a woman with nice nails. Doesn't she?

When you go into the salon and are waiting for your service to start, browse the polish racks just like any woman would and pick out a color you like. Carry it over to the pedicure chair and make sure the tech sees it before she starts to work on you. That's all you need to do. Sure, you could get clear like any other guy, but what's the fun in that? You may get a smile or a brief comment from the nail tech when she realizes you want colored polish on your toes, but there's no way she is going to refuse or think less of you for it. I'm not meaning to sound just like Jamie001 here, but really, being a little courageous and assertive in the beginning will pay off with pretty toes you'll appreciate looking at for several weeks to come, and nobody needs to know about it except you, your SO and the nail technician. You may even make a new friend in the process.
As for my "first" story, it was 1997, I had been reading up on artificial nail procedures on the 'net for awhile, and thought the whole process sounded pretty neat. I had played around with polish and even "do it yourself" acrylic nails for years, but never wore them out of the house, and had never even been in a professional nail salon. I was on vacation about 1200 miles from home, and found I had several hours free on the last day before I was to drive back (three days of driving ahead of me, from Arizona to Illinois). I called a couple of nail salons that I found in the local phone book, more concerned than anything about finding one that could schedule me for an appointment on less than 24 hours' notice. The first call turned out to be the winner, and I made an appointment for 9:00 AM on a Saturday morning for a full set of nail tips with pink and white acrylic overlays. The technician was super and didn't act like what I was doing was weird at all. I didn't have clothes with me to fully dress up on that trip, but I did wear a pair of mid-heeled women's shoes and small earrings. I hadn't planned on getting color, but decided to go for a very subtle translucent shimmer polish over the pink and white acrylics just to add a little sparkle. I wore my long and shiny nails for the length of time it took me to drive home, including multiple stops in restaurants and hotels along the way, and took them off at a highway rest stop just before I arrived back home.
Within a couple of months I was wearing long acrylics full time, and the rest, as they say, is history.

If you are too chicken to ask, why not go with the nails fully painted? They will clean then off first anyway and will probably ask you if you want the same shade.
If I was paying for someone else to do my nails, I would go all out with the French tips.

Go For It!
Leave some polish on your toes, or take it all off...it doesn't matter. Do as has been suggested earlier in this thread...pick a color from the rack, and take it with you to the chair; hand it to the tech. Smile the whole time and keep it light! This IS a fun thing to do, and the tech won't mind at all. If you and the wife are having fun, so will the techs, and everyone will enjoy the event.
Lots of guys get pedis, lots get clear, and more than you think do color. I've kept my toes in color for a couple of years now, & host BBQs at my house all the time. The kids, the neighbors, and all my motor-head buddies know I keep my nails in color. --You'll find it is not too big of a deal.
Do enjoy the rush you're feeling about going/not going, but DO get off the fence or you'll simply wear out your wife, and not get to enjoy doing this with her! (I took my three daughters for a group Pedi about a year ago..what a party!)
Have fun! (and I'd recommend Pompeii Purple by OPI as a color choice)

My mother wasn't so thrilled about color on my toes. No-one else (including my wife) has minded.
I would have colored toes right now if I hadn't had to stop putting on toenail polish because of nail fungus.

Go with her and have a good time. It is a lot easier to go with someone than alone. The first time I went I went with a friend. The whole experience was amazing. First they sit you in the message chair and put your feet in the warm water with jets on them. The message chair remote is available to choose the type message your chair gives. If you act like you belong there, they will treat you like you belong there and other customers barely notice. I sat and chatted with my friend while they cleaned and trimmed all the toes. The whole experience is like heaven. I swear every nerve in the body runs through your feet and it feels so good to get your feet worked on. If you legs are shaved all the better, but either way works. After they clean them they wrap warm towels around your leg from the knee down. They put lotion on them and message them for a bit. They give them a final drying off, and then professionally apply the polish. The first time I just pointed to my friend and told them "I'll just go with the same color she is getting" It was french tips with rhinestones. I still love the look. Look half way down at my picture in my link and this is the look I did my first time. Go with your wife, if you don't you may miss the opportunity for this to become a girls day out tradition for you both to go out on a regular basis and get your nails done. If you bail and she withdraws the offer, it would be a crying shame. Go with her out of respect for her offering, and come back here and tell us how wonderful it felt. You have my guarantee that if you do it, you will do it for life, yes it's that good.
