View Full Version : How do you "handle" your pictures?

This is just a curiosity kind of question really, as I sit here going through some of my new pictures recently taken and hoping for at least a couple to have come out somewhat nicely, but how do you handle your pictures? This is more aimed at the closeted or DADT girls on the forum more than the ones who don't care at this point in their lives.

Do you just save them to your PC/Laptop? Save them to an external HD? Save them to a Pen drive? Are they around for anyone to "find" while your not home?

My routine may seem a bit much to some so that is why I ask lol I save mine to a 8GB pen drive with a password. This is where I kept ALL of the pictures I have ever taken. Then I have the copies on the external where I pull the best of the best out and have in separate folders, where they get lightened, cropped, and sharpened if possible, and they stay there. The rest get file shredded using Guttman Algorithm with 35 passes.

Looking at what I just typed, yeah it may be a bit much but not being out to anyone but my SO it gives me a sense of security.

Any girlie photos I have are saved to a CD.
Most of my material is backed up on two drives and CD.
You finish up with many CD's the same but you can destroy them quite successfully in a microwave oven.
I do recommend other ways of disposal though.
Put them in a plastic bag first and only give them a short burst.
They are prone to burning with a flame briefly.

I am a little more paranoid than most, I figure. I use an AES 256 encrypted folder controlled by a program called Espionage. Any other system of concealing pics can result, too easily in accidental discovery. "Oh, what's this CD?" or..." of, "Oh look, pictures on a USB stick."

Keep my picture on 8GB drive and on my hard drive at work, the 8 GB turn up missing, not sure where it is or if someone has it. That was over a year ago. There is nothing on it to connect to me other than the picture. And I don't think anyone could make the connect looking at the picture of me fem and of me in male form.

This is good method to destroy cds and dvds. But I could envision a way with using a 4 axis robotic arm and a nice laser to read the pits off the deformed surface and reconstruct the original tracks. I'm thinking of a blow torch to turn the whole thing in a molten unreadable mess. But, somebody would have to really want to get the data off the cd using the aforementioned procedure. ;)

This has got me thinking though on how I want to handle my eventual pictures in a secure way. This has been a great thread!

I keep most of mine on an external HD. Plus on memory cards. here at home, it is just Snow White and I, and she knows all about me, so strangers in the house ever. And if family comes over for anything, they do not go into our computers. I have given thought though, that what if a burglar broke in while we were gone, then they would find out who I am, and could post Tara pictures in bad places all over the net. That would be crushing.

Cool question. I am the only one who uses my PC, but even so, I've made a folder called "Do Not Open - Private" and have loaded everything in there. If anyone, and the only other person in the apartment is my daughter were to "find" them, she'd first have some "splaynin" to do, as Ricky would always tell Lucy. I also upload all pics to a privately marked Photobucket account in case the HD crashes. I've got several personal favs on my iPad, which is passcode locked.

I guess, I'm not going out of my way to seal these away, but am putting up a few things that will need to be bypassed to demonstrate an invasion of privacy. After someone saw them and got grilled by my as to why, I'd then tell them, yeah, I like to dress up like a hot chick. All you had to do was ask. I'm more concerned right now as to why you invaded my privacy and steal their thunder. =)

Cheers,

Kalista

Mine are all saved on a sdcard . The sdcard is in my phone and from there I have an app on my phone that is called keepsafe that allows me ti move all those pics to a vault folder that can only be opened by a password and the app is also hidden in my phone so any normal person could never find it.

I labeled a folder "Software License Agreements," so I imagine no one will have any interest poking around there. But, my wife knows anyway, and there's not a whole lot of other people using this computer.

Speaking of pictures, my avatar is brand new! I know it's dark and grainy, but it makes me smile. Have a great day!

I use a flash drive and mislabel the folders and subfolders intentionally as stuff like "2003 Turbotax Setup" knowing anyone who sees it will likely lose interest and not read it. I keep said flash drive hidden away if not in use.

I live alone so I just keep them on the HD. I have used USB drives to transfer them but thought that it would be to easy to lose, and be found by someone else.

The only ones I hide are on my smart phone -- downloaded an app "Quick Pic" allows to controll and hide folders/files - all other pic are on my lap top and work computer (I'am the boss) in appropriate folders of online or shopped or different occasions / trips - wife's seen em all but other people use my phone from time to time so hidden phone files for pics works well.......................Debra

I just keep mine in a couple of folders in my PC. There is no danger of "compromise" since I am the only one who uses the thing. Note also that for every real pic of myself that I post as my avatars at least nine ended up on the cutting room floor. They are all unedited and with natural ambient lighting.;):)

My kids sometimes grab my computer and long in. They know my (male) password. Stephanie has her owner user setup to log into my computer. So the pictures are all in dated folders, but anyone would need to know Stephanie's password to be able to log in and see them. One time the kids saw this other user and asked who it was, and I told them it was operating files that my IT guy had on there.

Mine are on a password protected USB thumb drive. I keep it in a drawer with other drives, pens, pencils, etc.

Now my wife knows I dress and I dress around her but I haven't talked to her about pictures. I've never found a reason to.

A lot of great responses :D I am glad I am not the only one ( how many times in our life do we actually think this? lol ) who takes extra measures to make sure that private things remain private :)

You finish up with many CD's the same but you can destroy them quite successfully in a microwave oven.
I do recommend other ways of disposal though.

This is why I think keeping them on a pen drive is a good idea. If you want to get rid of them quickly, you could burn the pen drive but at the same time, it's a lot easier to hide some place if you really wanted too.

I am a little more paranoid than most, I figure. I use an AES 256 encrypted folder controlled by a program called Espionage.

The Guttman Algorithm with 35 passes is the same as used by the DOD (department of defense) so I feel that is the safest way to destroy all of the copies that I don't want seen or retrieved. Because deleting anything on your devices can be retrieved if someone knows how.

I have given thought though, that what if a burglar broke in while we were gone, then they would find out who I am, and could post Tara pictures in bad places all over the net. That would be crushing.

Another good reason to store them on the pen drive or CD's. Realistically if your house was broken into ( and I pray that never happens to any of us) the first things they might be stealing (other than cash or jewelry) is electronics and your PC would certainly be gone.

How coincidental is this thread. I have mine on both encrypted and non encrypted USB keys. However, my old work laptop now serves as my general purpose web design and training unit, resplendent with all my Rebecca photos on. Took it into to work today.................and left it there .

Hope we don't get burgled this weekend

Oh well, I do look pretty in a lot of them, if I say so myself!

The files I physically have at home I keep on encrypted hard drives. I got a lot of stuff between pics and videos.

The ones I have posted on amateur porn sites are there for anybody to see. In makeup I look nothing like my guy self and I have been careful to keep the backgrounds nondescript. In more than 5 years nobody has come close to discovering my secret identity.

External hard drive with program called "hide folders" which requires a password. However will look at what a couple of others here have used to be more secure. That said what about recovery software. I used to edit on my primary hard drive which I still have and now do that on and exteral hard drive. Should anyone get on either hard drive with a picture recovery software such as Pandora or Recuva many of my images will pop up. I've done it when I deleted pics I shouldn't have... Other than wiping the hard drive anyone have a suggestion to prevent this....

Truecrypted NAS partition inside a private keyed .dmg file. This is the third one. The other two I forgot to pull my private key when re imaging computer and lost the pix. Kinda sux cause I had some really good pix from an ex that I can never get back unless I had some 500 years to try breaking the encryption.

Truecrypt is a closeted person's best friend. I have a single large file (10GB) on my computer with no file extension to indicate what program should open it. That file is actually a container encrypted with two different 256-bit encryption algorithms (AES and Twofish), and without my 33-character pass-phrase and knowledge of how to use Truecrypt, you're not getting into it. :)

Before the land of digital photos, I would get the pics and negs back from the photo mat....look at the pics for while and then destroy by fire all the evidence that Renne ever existed.... then came digital.. phew. Like some others, I use a 700gb slave drive and bury the pics deep in a generic file folder subdirectory.....

I'm timid with putting pics on anything 'cept this site due to hackers... sooner or later someone will expand the facebk facial recog software and I'm toast. Then again, I've accepted that it's not a matter of IF I'm discovered, it's a matter of WHEN I'm discovered.. just a matter of time...

The only problem is that some of these schemes rely on only having one copy of a file on one device (like a USB drive.) It really is important to have multiple copies of anything you care about, since all media can and eventually will fail (flash drives in particular have a finite lifespan, as do hard drives.)

"Ohhhhhh, you will never find any of my photos anywhere", wink , wink, nod nod, say no more, say no more'

.. When I saw this thread , i started wondering how many SO and wives now have a road map to members photos, after reading the posts here.

I don't use the recycle bin any more. It doesn't truly delete anything. I use a file shredder that I got at http://www.fileshredder.org/

I used Recuva to see what truly wasn't deleted and horrified at all the pictures it had found. I ran the free space shredder (which covers the recycle bin) and tried again and found nothing. So it worked as far as I can tell and now when I gop to delete I just do it through the shredder. The initial run though took 4 hours but worth it.

We have a family computer, so once I upload my photos to this forum, I delete everything.

Maybe but they aren't truly deleted and any one can google how to recover from the recycle bin.

I keep my pictures on a USB flash drive attached to my keychain, in a folder that's marked "hidden." It's unlikely they'll be seen by anyone else that way...or, if they are, I've got bigger problems! :)

I keep them in a folder on a second internal drive (of three). The folder permissions are set to "write only" so I can drop new pics in easily but I can't - and nobody else can - see them. If I want to, I use the master pw to change the permissions and when I'm done I change them back.

This is, i admit, not the most secure system, compared to others, But then, I'm edging out of the closet. My prior, deeply closeted security system was real simple: no pictures ever. Foolproof.
