I was at a thrift shop today looking at, and trying on, some ladies jackets (in guy mode) and one of the shop staff felt the need to tell me "the men's jackets are downstairs mate".
I just said, "yes, I know".
My first internal reaction was anger. Would she say something like that if a woman was trying on man's jacket? I doubt it. I just tried to not let it bother me and considering this store gets everything donated, they will often charge prices that are near new anyway when its 2nd, 3rd or 4th hand clothing

The prices are nowhere near new prices not around here anyway I never give more than 15 dollars for one @ yes I have a few fur jackets I got at that price.
If they still have the new tags on them they can go as high as 25.00.
Don't worry about what he said to you keep shopping!

it was a woman that said it to me. I just walked out anyway as there really wasn't much there. By no means are all the items at "near new" prices but it happens with regularity on certain things.

I've had women say that too but it doesn't bother me.

I had a SA say once, not in any derogatory way, 'We have some excellent deals in the men's department'. I replied 'I make it a point never to wear any men's wear'. She stood there stunned for a second, then we both laughed.

Maybe the sales person was genuinely trying to help. They probably see clueless, fashion impaired men in the store all day long.

She didn't know. She was just trying to help you.

I do know that she was just trying to help. As I said in my initial post, my response to her statement was "yes, I know"

Give the SA the benefit of the doubt. She probably just assumed you made a mistake. Remember, most men are deathly afraid of shopping in the women's department. My local Value Village has been my source of a pretty extensive and classy wardrobe for years now. The red headed store manager always smiles and encourages me in my shopping.

You handled it the same way I would have depending on the day :) If I was having a carefree day I would have said "oh good, I thought I was in the wrong section" leaving her guessing as to what just happened lol I have only tried on an article once to date so your a lot braver than me but Don't let it stop you from your shopping, just carry on as you were before the sales persons approaches you :)

About 10 years ago, I was traveling and stopped in a town for a break. I noticed a small shoe store across the street and proceeded to the store to look around. Well, it was a women's shoe store. The very nice lady who was the SA began following me around informing me that this was all lady's shoes. I smiled and responded that I think I know that. She continued to inform me of that fact, each time being more emphatic. I was finding it humorous. I didn't find anything I liked, but I was tempted to pick out a pair of heels and ask to try them on. She would probably have had a stroke.

I just smiled and stated that I didn't find anything that would go with my outfit and left.

I was about to buy a pair of tennis shoes when the "helpful" SA said THOSE ARE WOMEN'S. I looked at her funny like why are you talking? They weren't my size but I thought about buying them anyway.

Had it go the other way too. I had been looking at a woman's suit on several occasions. It was somewhat expensive. One day I came into the department store and decided to buy it. Ran into a different SA and purchased it. Next time I was in the original SA said, did you buy your suit I would have loved to sell it to you. If she had spoken sooner I would have purchased if from her.

I get the same advice all the time but I then say I am looking for a nice outfit so as I can look more attractive.
This prompts a quizzical look and, oh! you want to dress up like a lady.
Yes! I reply and away we go, usually great interaction from there on in.
Quite often get a ton of stuff cheap after three or four ladies have helped in the transformation.
I can relate on three instances of going in as a guy and coming out two hours later as a hot blond chick to middle aged dowager.
When I bought the bridal gown I let them wrap it for me.

When I bought summer sandals in the women's section of a sports store, a young female SA was trying to help and I replied the only shoes fitting my feet narrower than average male were to be found there, at the upper size of women's range, not in the men's section.
