So a couple of week ago I noticed this, posted by an Essex based Heavy Metal gig and cd review group on facebook. I'm pretty sure based on a few comments that the guy who runs it has said to me and a couple of members of my band, that the guy who runs it is a heavily closeted crossdresser, and I think this supports that idea. However it's the comments this post got that interested me most.

'Bit of an odd question been sent in to me, but i'll post it anyway:

'What do you think about men wearing women's clothes, should it be considered normal and this stupid gender barrier broken? Would metalheads accept a transvestite metalhead or metal band?'

The first comment just said 'haha. trannys' but the guy that said it liked his own post and has quite a racist profile picture, so I think we can be glad not to count him among our supporters, the rest of the comments were much better however.

'I'd accept trannies'

'i don't care much about how they look or their sexual preferences.. what matters is how they sound.'

'Yeah it was pretty much accepted in the 80's when there was still Glam!!!'

'Who gives a ****? If someone can scream slayer real loud and bang their ****ing head thats all that counts'

' Poison - look what the cat dragged in.....'

'People should be allowed to do whatever it is that makes them happy. And providing they don't shove their ideologies in the faces of others, or expect some kind of special treatment - why shouldn't they be accepted?'

plus a couple of comments from me and my bands guitarist, who is openly a crossdresser. For a heavily male dominated genre that is often accused of all kinds of bad things it is really nice to see this kind of acceptance.

when it comes to metal there is a lot of different types ,.. at a TWisted Sis, Poison, Joan Jett ,judas priest etc concert you would probably be fine ,.. go to an actual Slayer concert and you better have a few gurls there with you to watch your back

ive loved metal all my life ,. and while there is alot of very good smart people in this , for that number there is also the same number of mindless idiots out there that listen to this music for no other reason but to release aggresion ,.. i know i would not want to be in a cute dress and heels while in the middle of a mosh pit , lol

Certainly not haha. My friend Luci (the other crossdresser in my band) went to a Rammstein concert dressed as Snow White in London though, even got hit on by a few girls haha

There is an eclectic mix of outlooks amongst metal groups.
I think it is what ever any one wants they will get.

I actually think that the Metal audience would be among the mopst accepting music genres for our lifestyle. Now, show up at a George Strait concert dressed and all bets are off. :)

You'd also probably be OK at a Nightwish concert, which is symphonic metal. Some of the GGs I saw there were very nicely dressed indeed (both Goth and otherwise). I would have loved to be able to wear a few of those outfits!

Metal is such a diverse genre of music way too many facets to lump together.
I love 80's glam.90's thrash and everything since then pretty much.
Melodic metal is big on my play lists at the moment and some old school punk.
I been really fortunate to see some of the metal pioneers when they first came on to the scene.Way too many shows to list all the bands I have seen over the years.
What s really cool is you are playing a club and your idols are in that club watching YOU, talk about fear of making a mistake.LOL

I've played to country audiences all over North America en femme. From the roughest honky tonks, to family amusement parks. Country audiences are fiercely dedicated to the music, if your playing from the heart, they don't care how your dressed. I've met lots of GG country artists, and when we compare notes, we're treated about the same. I've had a handful or rude comments, my boobs groped, and some truly creative pickup lines, but never anything that made me feel in danger. I'll never forget hearing-
'That was a dude playing guitar'
Other guy- 'Of course it was, a chick couldn't play like that!'.

I think Glam Metal (unfortunately a genre I don't really like) and a lot of the Symphonic, Gothic or Industrial Metal gigs it probably wouldn't be a massive issue, at least on the softer end. Bands like Nightwish, HIM, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, maybe even stuff like My Dying Bride or Cradle of Filth it would probably be pretty much fine. Control Human Delete or The Berzerker? Perhaps not lol.

I actually had the chance to see Nightwish in London a few months ago but I had a gig myself going on at the same time

That's good to hear (mostly lol). My mum is hugely into country music as her Dad was a well known country musician when he was alive. I think the metal scene has a very similar dedication to the music. I've noticed that the more underground nature of metal has caused two general types of metalhead though, one that is fiercely elitist and won't give anything not metal a chance. I met the guitarist of Destroyer 666 not too long ago, which is a band I really like, and was discouraged to find out he was pretty homophobic. The other side of the scene though is hugely tolerant of anything that doesn't hurt people and thankfully I know more people who are in the latter group
