Trying to make lemonade from a major lemon

I have been waiting months for all the pieces to fall into place for my spinal fusion surgery and this past Friday I was SUPPOSED to meet with the neurosurgeon for a final "inspection" and Q/A session. Friday at 3:00 am I woke with a bad headache and realized I had had a stroke. Numb face, weak legs, and L arm no grip and the L hand and slurred speech. I was discharged yesterday with a "it should get better' diagnosis and treatment plan.

the only good thing is now I have a legit reason to wear a nightgown ll the time since pants and shirts are difficult to handle right now.

Thank God for modern medicine! A few years ago a stroke was usually a major debilitating event.

No family but my room mate and her daughter will help. I WAS the caregiver for my RM , now her daughter will have double duty.

Sorry to hear about this. I guess you're now aware of the reason specialists are called in for an opinion in advance of surgery: reducing the risk of complications. A stroke is a major complication. Not a MD, but I think it's a safe bet you're better off having the stroke without the anesthesia to cope with as well. That said, I won't wish medical issues on anyone.

The spinal surgery will have to wait until you're stable for a time to be determined by your medical team. Doctors generally decline to perform surgery if the patient is unlikely to survive the procedure or it is likely to worsen the problem.

Well this is a high risk procedure for anyone as the spinal implant is placed through the open abdomen. IT is a MUCH better end result than the old titanium rods in the back and 2 surgeons had already approved the surgery until this happened. Strokes cannot be predicted as all my bone tests and blood work came back as perfectly normal- even for a big gal like me. CT scan, -post stroke- is also clear.
