A very dear friend passed away about two weeks ago. She had no living relatives as far as any of us know, and so my spouse and I and another close friend of hers have been pitching in to finalize her arrangements and to vacate her place. It has been a lot of sad, difficult work and we are by no means finished.
Since many of her friends only know me as a woman I am en femme throughout.
Today, cleaning out her kitchen, I was wearing pastel blue shorts and a t-shirt with hearts on it, almost no makeup, just mascara and lipstick.
As we were working, a neighbor came to the door and because I was closest I was the one to talk to her. We chatted for a while and I told her of our friend's passing.
"Are you her daughter?" she asked.
"No," I said, "We're just close friends of hers," and we continued chatting.
As she left she said, "Well, Barbara (my actual name), if I can be of any help just call on me."
Despite the sadness of the situation I felt a few moments of elation!
Hugs,
Barbara (Persephone on this system because Barbara was already taken).
