It's been awhile since I've posted so I thought I'd give an update!

I'm progressing on my plan to wear a southern belle gown to a cosplay convention. Wife continues to support it, in an understanding way. I'd be happier if it was enthusiastic support, but I'll take what I can get. :-)

So far, I've finished the hoop skirt (180 inch circumference), and am currently having the corset made by a professional (expensive but going to be soooo worth it). I've also gotten a bunch of makeup and have practiced several times, and while it's getting better it's still pretty scary looking. Also got the wig, but I need to make some styling adjustments to it.

I'm also thinking about getting a lolita dress, complete with petticoats to do a doll costume next year as well.

Sounds so fun!

I've always wanted to be a Southern belle but have never had an appropriate venue. Please post pictures as soon as you feel it is appropriate!

By the way, for those who want to do something similar but don't need the exacting authenticity that the OP is striving for, you might check out Quinceanera dresses. Here are some examples (click here) (http://www.newyorkdress.com/Quinceanera_Dresses.html).

Hugs,
Persephone.

Oh, my, a Southern Belle, every since the first time I saw Gone with the Wind, I've wanted to wear one of those. But you have to be careful with those, many young lady fainted, with the vapors, during that fashion period, Seems no matter how good that small waist looks, to much of a good thing turns out is not good for you, no over lacing!
Forgot to ask, what color, what fabric, more details!

I know this is slightly off-topic, but has anyone seen the classic Carol Burnett sketch "Went with the Wind"? Her dress designer (Bob Mackie) made an absolutely brilliant dress with a curtain rod on the shoulders. She says to Rhett "I just saw this in the window and had to have it!" :)

Bob Mackie is a genius: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Mackie

dawn - I remember that skit. It is a classic and gets replayed occasionally.

If anyone in the San Jose area wants an authentic antebellum gown, my dressmaker does exquisite work. In fact she does great work with any style and is a costumer for the San Jose Opera and San Jose Rep and is VERY CD friendly. www.karalins.com

It's going to be purple tafetta, based on this gown from the mini-series Champagne Charlie.

I like the Southern Belle gown I think that is great.
Take it slowly and that way keep your wife interested.
Don't turn her off by pushing it.
