My girlfriend and I were texting back and forth the other day and her phone auto-corrected something she wrote and made it seem like she was calling me Abby. Which kind of is growing on me and feels more right than Julie. Anyways, it got me curious to know how many times people around here have changed their names.

Hi Julie, I really have no need to change my name.
I picked my name because it had no connection to anyone
past or present it's just my favorite color and flower.

...it's just my favorite color and flower.
:D It's got a connection to you and that's what matters.

Dear Abby,
I'm thinking about changing my name to Julie, because it's a beautiful name.
Hehehehehe It is. It would look gorgeous on you as well.

For a long time I never associated myself with any sort of female name. Then one day in my early 20's I was looking at myself in the mirror and I just knew I had to be called something to match that feminin side of me. I choose the name Sarah, something from my past, and I have never looked back and never regreted having taken that name.

It seems for some that the changing of their name seems to relate to their exploration of themselves. If they learn something new or enter a different level of the exploration, then they might change their name as a result. Of course some change their name as part of their transition. I haven't felt the need. My journey has been pretty linear and I haven't felt like there has been a new me at any point. I am quite happy with it and don't see a need for change.
Ressie
10-01-2013, 08:24 AM
On a chat site in the '90s I used the name Kat. Resserd (dresser spelled backwards) had been used mostly on internet sites in the last few years, then Dee, yet I just changed my name here to Ressie which is an actual girl's name. I like Dee, but it turned out to be an overused name on this site.

Once :o
I used to go by Celeste, but my girlfriend absolutely hated the name and said I sounded like a fancy female escort :P I just liked it because it reminds me of a color ;p But at the same time it's easier to sound like a genetic girl with a more common name in my opinion so this works!! n_n
Allison or Alli was one of the other names that I really liked and she ended up loving it too so here I am with it :) It shall never be changed again <3
The other ones I had thought about were Erica and Teagan as well :o
Candice Mae
10-01-2013, 08:34 AM
I used to be Crystal, but for going full time I didn't really like the name. So I changed to Candice and added Mae as a middle name, which with my last name sounds like it was meant to be.

I have changed it twice, once was the name I thought I should be in my teenage years, but in my thirty's I name my second daughter it, then I went with Teresa, but it really did fit me too well, so I am very happy with Stacy.

I have thought about it several times, as there are many unique names out there that I fancy, but in the end, I doubt that I would change my name, as it was my first name that I chose for myself, and ppl normally don't go around changing there names the whole time.
TGMarla

Really, only once. I went by the name "Elena" for a while, before I landed on Marla. I kept it as a middle name, though. So now I'm Marla Elena Stein.

I will be requesting a name change soon, when I joined the forum I hadn't given much thought in to a femme name, Sarah was an easy and common name to use. Since I have been accepting this part of me more, I will be changing my name to something that I like more and keep it for a long time hopefuly.

Have had the same feminine name ever since I had need of a feminine name. The 'Dee' part was a necessary addition as my salon already had Robin A, B and C in their database. Hence Robin D or Robindee ;)
Pretty simple I guess.
Hugs, just plain Robin

I haven't changed my name, just amended it. "Zelda" was the only choice after a brainstorming session with a friend. "Rose" was a nom de plume I used that sounded like a good middle name.
Yes, middle name. Well, actually, one of them. I never use them, except if I want to sound really pretentious, but they're there as tributes to two friends who were very important in my life. And I do have a last name but I don't use it, though it's known to a few people out there.

I don't particularly like the name "Dawn". I just blurted it out at a CD meeting when someone asked what my femme name was (I didn't have one yet.) But it seems to have stuck and I'm to lazy to change it. :)

was christened Jennifer by my Aunt at the ripe old age of 10. Never saw a need to change it. I added the middle name Marie when I transitioned.
Kate Simmons
10-01-2013, 10:57 AM
Many times. The names I choose reflect who I am as a person at any given time. I was originally Heather, then Victoria , then Ericka, then Salandra, then Arianna, then Denise, then Abigail, now Kate. Actually my full name at this time is Katherine Megan Simmons.:battingeyelashes::)

With apologies to T S Eliot TGs are very similar to Practical cats. here is the edited version; (change cats to TG and you get it)
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey—
All of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
(This is the name you call them... The name only YOU use. This is the name you chose here and it changes with the season, the wind or just on a whim)
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover—
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
:)
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

Tina B.
10-01-2013, 11:55 AM
Never really changed my name after figuring out what it would be, I toyed with Karen Sue, that's what I would have been named if I had been born a girl, but then I decided, I was a grown up, why go with what someone else thought about a child they didn't even know, when I could find something that fit me better, I came up with my name, Tina Lynn Betterman. Tina Lynn is playing with my initials, the Betterman comes from the movie Tootsie " I was a better man as a women than I ever was as a man." That was a choice I made, almost 20 years ago, and it's been my female name every since, I think it would feel strange at this point to change it, I feel it's who I am.

I always had Amy. I always liked it , but also it's from the Pure Prarie League song, Amie, I just think that sums up my realtionship with Amy. The stuggle between my male and female self. Glad to say though Amy is winnen the day!

I first went by a name very close to my male name then changed it with online security (and maybe some paranoia) in mind. I haven't really settled on a real name, as I want my wife to help me come up with something we both like. The one I use here is my favorite band, just misspelled.

I have been Laura for as long as i can remember, i starte using it when i was in my teens, But just recently, my Wife said we should change it to Jackie, then she could call me it in public even when in drab. She has been using it and it is begining to grow on me, so i may change it.

I also have two email addresses and two telephone numbers.

10-01-2013, 12:49 PM
I have only changed my name once. When I signed up it was "Miss Joanne" but this I saw other girls signing up with MissJoanne, and Miss_Joanne and I just didn't want it to become confusing or for either one to post something and others to give me the credit , or the blame, for such posts because they didn't read the name right.
I just dropped the "Miss" so whether that counts as a name change or not depends on how you look at it.

I haven't yet, I'm seriously thinking about a different first name, and taking my mothers maiden name when things get serious, as in full time.
I'm off to a gender identity counselor this week, so I suspect I should say in the near future.

I tried on a number of names when I was younger and trying to find my name. After a while I decided on Margo and used that one for about 12 years. I changed it to Sabrina because I wanted a name that fit me better. Also margo had a bit of baggage attached to it and shedding the name helped bring closure to some of that baggage.
Jenara
10-01-2013, 03:27 PM
Jenara is a fantasy name I've given myself but in the unlikely situation that I decide to transition to become a woman, I might go with the name my parents would have given me had I been born female, Samantha.

Several times. It's a bit trial and error, a bit like clothing itself. Some names fit for a while but then went out of style (for me, anyway). Veronica was sort of given to me, and for who and where I am in life right now, Veronica works. :D

I have been Maureen Fleming, Katrina Maureen, MissArlene, Beyonce Welch, over the course of my CD like. Arlene Raquel will likely be my last female name.
Phoebe

Changed my name once. For many years I used Janet, log on name JanetCD or Janet_cd on various forums. Changed to Phoebe in the last year. Found that Phoebe was the name my mother was going to give me if I were born a girl. Also like the meaning of Phoebe - Phoebe (given name), a female given name meaning "bright and shining".

Kathryn Philips
10-01-2013, 06:05 PM
When I was born I was given just a first name and no middle one. My male name is Philip and my real surname start with the letter G. When I first neded to chose a female name to open a profile on website for CDs, the name Katie Philips was what came to my mind first. As you can see I adapted my first male name to form an alternate surname for my female self. I liked it so opened an email account with this name. Since KatiePhilips was taken, I decided to spell my femme name Kattie Philips so I could use kattiephilips to form my email address. I used this name for several years including a long period without actively dressing. As soon as I resumed dressing I figured I was too old for a "Katie" so decided to use the full length version. Faced with the 3 most common spellings (Catherine, Katherine, Kathryn ), I opted for kathryn; the name you all know me as. Today there have been developments following having just come out to my parents. Their acceptance and support means that I want to keep my family name when I eventually change my name to begin my transition. I have decided to add a middle name; "Philippa". With this name, being the female version of Philip, I will keep a link with my given name and thus honnour the my parents original choice. So, at some point in the future I will change my name to Kathryn Philippa G...

In my first stirrings of thinking of a femme name (though I didn't know it was called a "femme name" at that point), I had thought of being "Suzanne."
Later, I put together my first femme name from a feminized version of my male middle name (spelled the way a friend of mine in college had spelled hers), my maternal grandmother's maiden name, and, as a middle name, the name of the original avatar from Second Life, "Ruth." (One of the glitches that used to happen in SL was that your avatar shape could temporarily be replaced by Ruth's shape after teleporting. We called it "getting Ruthed.") So I became "Jaymie Ruth Tapie," and even had that label on my makeup cases and so forth.
Then, once when I was on the phone with my mother, I asked her about how she'd given us our names (mine came from the "family book," so I was named after some ancestor), and then what name she'd have given one of us (she had three sons in all) if we'd been born a girl. She said she'd always loved the names "Amy Gale." Right then, I felt it was right for me, as her firstborn, to give those names a home. So I became "Amy Gale Ruth Tapie" at that moment, and Amy I shall be forevermore. :) (My mother now knows about this side of me. She's actually pleased that I took those names.) That's the label that's now on my makeup case and hair-accessories case, as well as on the "Transgender ID Card" in my pocketbook carried in my purse, and I sometimes wear an "A" pendant as well.

Dalva
10-01-2013, 11:58 PM
I tried using variations of my male name but I never liked them to begin with. I ended up choosing Dalva because of my admiration of the title character of a novel by Jim Harrison, plus I think it sounds pretty.
Stephy
10-02-2013, 03:47 AM
I took the female version of my male name because I want to still be myself, just female. I did think at one point of calling myself Melissa because I love the sound of the name. Another possibility was Catherine - what my parents had thought of naming me if I had been a GG, but I have known too many girls with that name so it has associations - both good and bad.
BOBBI G.
10-02-2013, 06:16 AM
The name I have chosen, and will be mine legally soon, is Erica Bobbi Gruetter. Erica is remembering my daughter, also from one of my middle names, Bobbi, from my boy first name, last name was given name. all have meaning and soon will be on my DL.
Other than the name I was born with, this is the only one I will ever have, too much meaning.

It was immediately clear that my newly-found femme self needed an identity so I generated a short list of names I liked and asked my wife's opinion. She chose Tina from that list and I filled out the rest of the name when Tina got an email address. I can't imagine changing it!

I have two names, the male name my parents gave me and the female name that I chose for myself based on what my mother would have named me if I had been born a girl. Just as with my male name, I've never seen a reason to change my female name even though it is much easier.
So to answer the original question - never.

When I was younger I always loved the name Heather, so when I began to dress on a regular basis that's who I became when enfem. Now as time has gone by since I don't go out enfem I went with a more generic name that can go either way.

Changed? No... Modified sort of. I've always been Wynonna Breeana R------. However What I sometimes do is use my middle name and call it Bree for short... This works as my legal name (Brian) I can say that's Bree-an give the I and E sound...

I've changed my name only once in 16 years of dressing up and discovering myself. Back in the day I used to go by Gothic_Zarabeth (or just plain Zara). As I got older I decided it was time to shed the moniker and go with something that represented the evolving ME better, so... I decided upon Bethany Chloe-Ann Lovely as a full name (also what I use on my applications for stuff which is legal).
I'm still evolving, but I the need to change names is no longer at the back of my mind. Plus, I'm still the fun-loving gothic/eccentric/Victorian/Renaissance girl I've always been ;)
