I'm a Pipefitter/Mechanic experienced in working in radiological areas with contamination at times and with hazardous chemicals. I'm curious to see how many other transwomen here are working in industrial environments.

I have yet to begin transition though and expect it may still be a year or so, but that I'll still be doing the same job for the next several years while I do so....

The variety of occupations, current and past, are even more wide than the variations in how, when and the extent that CDs do their thing--- amazing!
Currently I'm a management consultant and author but previously in the motion picture industry coast to coast in two countries, hardware-houseware wholesaling, coventional and discount retail chains --- but started out as a caddy and selling softdrinks as a kid door-to-door until I tasted what I was selling-awful! Then worked when not in college at a shipyard.

Stefan,If your fellow employees carry lunchboxes to work, don't do it there! It will never be easy!

Coming from the perspective of a young person who began work in an industrial environment about a year ago, there is a lack of options a lot of times for people in general in today's economy, but especially transgender people.

Looking at the professions here has confirmed what I suspected that STEM, medical, and trades jobs dominate the careers for transgender people. Here's my opinion on what some of this is. Business is trickier for us because the prejudices of other people prevent them from being as likely to trust us in that kind of position where we're dealing with people a lot as the face of the company. It happens, especially with experience on the resume, but in much of the US, the South specifically, it seems harder to overcome prejudices for this. Prejudices in the hyper-masculine trades jobs can certainly make finding work more difficult, but with simultaneous increasing shortage of people in these jobs and demand for people who can do them, there are people even in the South who will at least say, "Well, I'm hiring this person to weld, and the resume shows the ability for the job."

I got my Bachelor of Arts in History. I very much wanted to do museum work even though it's not the highest paying, or maybe even to teach. However, when I realized I'm trans, I realized those running museums and historic battlefields in Virginia are less likely to trust me as the face of the museum or the NPS. As for teaching, even if I were just gay and found out to be, I suspect in much of the state, all it would take is a single redneck parent suggesting that I would "indoctrinate the kids with the gay agenda" to end my teaching career. In some parts of the country (not so much VA) gay people are getting into teaching, but I haven't really seen the transgender teachers out there.

I was desperately looking for a way out of the blue collar world, but now am settled on apprenticeship (and increasingly content with it). If you're transgender in the South with this economy, I hate to seem cynical, but I say take the work you can get.

This is just my opinion though.

But I am just a CD and I can't for the love of me see how a transition would be possible on the job even if i wanted to.
The job has a lot to do with enforcing rules and imposing tasks on others.
I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to do it without my male persona. - I know my female colleagues do it - but I would have to start soooo again from the start.
But that's probably what being CD means.

I have worked in the medical field for 30 years in the laboratory side of things. Very analytical and not much direct patient care. My view of the work fields previously mentioned is that there are a lot of analytical minds in the CD community represented here. It is surprising and comforting to me. Do others agree? Is this discussed elsewhere in the forums?

I own a pub

Most people would think this is a dream job, but the reality is that it can be a real nightmare:

I regularly have to work up to 18 hours a day, 7 days a week
I have not had a single day off since I started, in February 2013 - and I cannot see the opportunity to have a day off in the coming future
I have to listen to a lot of rubbish spoken by customers
I hear everything, see everything but cannot say anything
When I am behind the bar, I have no friends - lots of acquaintances, but NO friends
Any problems - 'the buck stops here'!
I am constantly on the look-out for underage drinkers and people selling/using drugs on the premises, because it could cause me to lose my license
If the beer tastes good, it's good beer. If the beer tastes 'funny', it's my fault
I cannot have anything to drink, because it's a slippery road downwards
I cannot afford to lose customers, so I have to dress 'conservatively', cannot listen to the music I like and have to keep my thoughts to myself
Every person who comes through the door could pull a weapon and rob me
Every person who comes through the door could use abusive language at me
Every person who comes through the door could run off without paying for their drinks, thus costing me money

If you care to read the purpose of the TS forum

This section is for all members to post in, however, topics are restricted to Transsexual specific items and for Transsexuals to share their experiences. This section is also Gender Neutral, this section supports both M2F and F2M Transsexuals.

The decision on whether to move/delete/edit a thread is dependent upon the OP. The OP of this thread identifies as TS and alludes to her transitioning in her current job/career. As the OP did not request a specific section of the membership, it is quite valid for non TS members to contribute to the thread.

Rianna Humble

S1mone,

You already have your answer. The Original Post did not specify replies coming from only one section of the membership so all members have the right to post.

If you want a discussion that is limited to only MtF transsexuals, you have two alternatives:

1 Spell out clearly in the original post that you only want replies from MtF TS members - and draw the mods' attention if we overlook a response from someone else

2 Better than that post in Safe Haven

I disagree, Melissa and Simone . I think it shows that we are a very diverse and intelligent group. We have everything from Truck Drivers to Chemical Engineers to Electricians and even a Youth Worker. Many of us are still in traditionally male dominated jobs. I think it shows a TS that no matter what your occupation is, you can transition and you do not have to go out and find a traditionally female job to keep working, unless you want too that is.

stefan37
10-23-2013, 08:05 PM
That would be correct Jorja if only ts were responding. I would venture that the majority of the responses were from those individuals that have no intention of transitioning and will continue to work as a male. I will agree that those of us that are TS, gender variant,or across dresser have a many variety of.professions.

It sounds like the OP is TS but many of the replies are obviously not TS relative.

Yeah, I actually did put it in this section assuming people would take it to be a post for the TS crowd. Maybe a better question would have been what jobs people have transitioned in.

I thought your original post made that reasonably clear, but perhaps it's worth trying again and being even more explicit? I'd contribute again.

:Angry3:If members took the time to read the FAQs (http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/faq.php?faq=rules_and_guidelines#faq_specific) instead of criticising the moderators because the OP made unfounded assumptions, there would have been no need for the continuous bitching about who should post to this thread.
