How do I know what size skirt to buy; in other words how do men's measurements translate to women's measurements.
Thanks,

You want to look at the hip size. Not the waist as normally.
Like said below my post... above the belly button (hips)

Depends upon how you wish the skirt to fit. 38-40 inch waist, elastic waist on skirt....size 18. No elastic waist...hmmm...20 or 22. You also need to look at the waist size from the woman's waist, not the man's. That means it is normally above the belly button.

Christina,
So called standard skirt sizes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Ideally you should try before you buy.
If this is not practical for you at least get a return receipt so you can get a replacement or a refund if your skirt isn't a proper fit.

Measure your waist, then get your size from ebay listings of skirt or skirt suits. You can get a skirt that's up to 3 inches tighet than your waist. I think I'm a 30 to 29 inch waist yet I fit into size 4 skirts at 26 to 25.5 inches.
Most online stores have size charts you can consult. Take a look at them. Usually, you can go one size smaller than your actual measurements would prescribe (or even two, depending on how tight you want it to fit). At Victoria's Secret, usually, if I pick the sizes from the size charts that most correspond to my measurements, I end up with loose stuff.

Christina,
I suggest you do this:
Get a piece of string and wrap it around your waist. Cut it off where the ends meet, then fold it in half. Take the half and discretely compare it against the width of one or two skirts in the shop. You will then magically know your own size!
It worked for me.

If you buy skirts with elasticized waists and a stretch material then size is not such an issue.

jcOh Jenny what a picture you conjure up in my mind.
You flitting about the skirt racks with your folded-up piece of string.
Me walking around and round trying to work up the courage to buy a dress or a skirt!

The string method is very cool. I like that! Think I'll try it.

Hi Christina1,
I was going to suggest you take a tape measure and then measure the width of the waistband on a pair of pants that you know fit you. Then take your tape measure to the store and measure for the same measurement on the waistband of the skirt you are planning to buy. If it's the same you know the skirt will fit.
But, I think you should go with Jenny's string method - it's much more discrete :D

Christina (and everyone),
I'm glad to be of help. Of course you can use the same method to get the length right too.
Which is something I should have done yesterday I think! I spotted this really cute little skirt in Miss Selfridge. It was obviously very short, but it looked all glam and perfect to go out in on new years eve. So I got myself all dolled up, and showed the gf. She sat on the sofa and told me to walk back and forth across the room. As I did, she kept shouting "I can see them - I can seeeeee them!". She was of course referring to my undies. So she told me she wasn't going out with me wearing "that", and so I wore a skirt a wole inch longer instead!.
Anyway, when we got home a couple of hours ago, she suggested I put it back on! And then she proceeded to chase me round the house trying to pinch me! We had lots of fun :D
So as it turned out, it was 12 quid well spent, despite the fact I never got to wear it to go out!

She took this before she began chasing me:

This is from my sister from my mom from her mom -- all seamstress
You always have a tape measure with you....just get your measurements
For me
end of thumb to first crease 1"
thumb to little finger spread but not extended 8"
same but really streached out 9"
middle finger to center of elbow 18"
but always try it on if you can or make sure the store has a good exchange policy

I found out this week the best way is to try before you buy.
I was shopping last Wed, bought 3 skirts. All 3 were marked different sizes and all 3 fit very well.
They were on the sale rack, so if I had tried the size i usually take, only one of the 3 would have fit.
I was dressed femme at the time so trying them on was no issue, even though the stores were a little busy.
It is cold now in my part of the country, so was wearing slacks. Was in a fairly large mall. Fit right in, as for about 3 hours when i was in the mall only saw 2 girls wearing skirts, and they appeared to be working in one of the offices

Aubrey,
Did you ever see the the UK sitcom."Allo Allo!".
It featured a "German" female secretary called Helga who wore the most beautifully tailored skirt suits.
And of course being a British farce it wasn't long into the plot before her skirt was off to reveal panties, stockings, and suspenders!
