I was listening to Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN this morning and they were talking about crushes during their youth and rating who they liked more from the show Gilligan's Isle--Ginger or MaryAnne. Of course my head went to which style do I want to adopt for my femme self. I am more comfortable trying to be the girl next door rather than the long lanky sexy woman.

Which style is more you?

For you youngsters wondering what this show is it helps to be at least in your mid to late 40's, I am late 50's-that's a different story.

Oh for me most defiantly Mary Ann, loved her looks and who can forget her short shorts something I love to wear still.

MaryAnn all the way. Loved those shorts.

Well, Gilligan's Isle wasn't big (or even on at all..) this side of the pond until satellite opened up decades of outdated, generally poor quality, network pulp to be screened 24/7 and repeated quarterly until... well, I digress.

Ginger for me - but then I am fatally attracted to redheads and freckles and the long legs are just a bonus

I'd like to present like Ginger, but date MaryAnne.
I love the way they look in this episode.

Definitely Mary Anne I like the more average type of girl. And yes to the short shorts!

I'm small and brunette so MaryAnne and she was so cute. I did like Ginger's sexiness and her gowns though.

Mrs. Howell of course, she is one sexy fox!

Just like American Pie was movie that popularized the term "MILF", Mrs Howell is the one who popularized the term "GILF". And those outfits of hers- haute couture has nothing on her. Pity though, since she never posed for a centerfold. :-(

And notice her diet on the show-- lots of salads / greens-- I guess she eats like a rabbit too!

day to day, i have to say Marry Anne all the way, but when i go out, then Ginger is my role model.

If I could combine both Ginger & Mary Anne that would be a fun wardrobe......grew up in the Midwest so farmer's daughter would be great during the day but styling at Ginger at night would boost the glam!

I guess my style is usually in between the two but I loved Mary Anne best!! but I love dressing up like Ginger too , lol, they brought all those outfits and heels for a three hour cruise? lol and their make up should have run out about a month into the first season let alone the razors to keep their legs so nice and smooth!

For me Mary Anne with a touch of Ginger

The recipe for me, Start with 2 1/2cups of Mary Ann, add a cup of Ginger, and a 1 1/2 cups of Mrs Howell and a tablespoon of the Professor (I have a knack for fixing things)... Mix thoroughly and bake.

Geez, tough one. I've done all of them, Mary Ann, Ginger, Mr. and Mrs. Howell, the Skipper, Gilligan and the Prof in imitation. That boat must have been a TARDIS to fit all the junk they used on the island though. Think they were all Time Lords. :)

I'd like to be MaryAnne.
No wonder the ship wrecked, they obviously had too much stuff on there.
No one has mentioned it, but I guess you all realize this came up because Russell Johnson (the professor) died yesterday. Now Tina Louise (Ginger) and Dawn Wells (Maryanne) are the only ones still living.

Mary Anne, if I remember from a recent wikipedia article I read, polling back in the day, the majority of GM found Marry Anne the more attractive of the 2. Something about her overall down home girl next door beauty that just really stands out.

There are varying levels of beauty. Mary Anne was my choice because of her more natural looks even though there was definately make-up in there (another thing with a never ending supply on the ship). Ginger was absolutely glamorous but I prefer more of accentuating natural looks instead of changing them if that makes sense.

I vacillate. Usually I prefer Mary Anne and want to be a sweet girl. But sometimes I just wanna be the bombshell.

Oh yeah, Ginger's wardrobe was to die for. Sequined gowns, high heels, what's not to like?

RIP Russell Johnson, the only character in the history of television who could make a radio out of a coconut but couldn't patch a hole in a ship. Hugs, Michelle

Like others, I always liked Mary Ann best. She's the predecessor to Daisy Dukes to me...
As I've been CDing...that side of me appreciates Ginger more. But still MA's for me :)

And I dunno about suspending disbelief..
but I sure suspend the logic half of my brain watching the show.

I usually plan to look like Maryann, have the sex appeal of Ginger, have the resources of Mrs. Howell. But in the end I wind up looking like the Skipper in drag. :(

I always liked Mary Ann. I heard she was a lesbian. That makes two of us!

I read recently that the reason Maryann wore the shorts was because Ginger was so tall (around 6') that Dawn wanted shorts so that she didn't look too short when they were standing together. She felt that the shorts made her legs look longer.

Mary Ann is more my style.
It was a shock to me when I found out that this fall will 50 years since Gilligan's Isle first aired.
Also sad to hear that the only surviving cast members are Ginger and Mary Ann......since the professor just passed away.

As long as I don't get to be Mrs. Howell. I could never stand when Thurston Howell referred to his wife as Lovey.......ick!

I have always answered Mary Ann when asked this question. She always seemed the more approachable of the two. Ginger is of course very hot also.

Remember WKRP, Jennifer or Bailey? Jennifer was the unapproachable blonde and Bailey was the hot brunette girl next door. Bailey or Mary Ann? Is the real hard question to answer.

Marcelle
01-17-2014, 09:00 PM
Definitely Mary Anne . . . Not only was she a knock out in that girl next door look but I am sure if push came to shove she could be a bit more naughty than Ginger :battingeyelashes:

To me, Ginger was always the unattainable Goddess, and in many ways I was smitten by her in a Playboy Centerfold kind of way as a teenager with raging hormones. But that was just my libido speaking...

As for my mind...and in the words of Harry Belafonte's calypso classic: "All day, all night, Mary Ann..." ;) .

Rhonda Darling
01-17-2014, 11:04 PM
I was Ginger in my dreams; Mary Anne as I woke up to the real world each day; Mrs. Howell is how I view myself when I'm wide awake and rational; and Gilligan in drag is what my friends see. Does that count as the best of both worlds???

When I watched the show (long long ago) as a young lad I was definitely a Mary Anne fan. And seeing the re-runs now, I still am. My tastes in dressing now are more practical, thus more toward Mary Anne rather than Ginger. I do have to agree, however, that it’s a tough call between Marry Anne and Baily Quarters.

Wow, I was just about to bring this up when I saw your post. I adored Bailey. Same kind of thing with Three's Company. Once I saw Joyce DeWitt in a leotard that was it.

I would watch Gilligan's Island everyday after school and fantasize about being one of the girls stuck out there in the middle of the ocean. I actually loved the idea.

As long as I don't get to be Mrs. Howell. I could never stand when Thurston Howell referred to his wife as Lovey.......ick!

That's probably because like most wives, she controls the purse strings.

Approachable, Mary Anne for me. I can't eat a banana cream pie with out thinking of Mary Anne. The down to earth, girl next door. You can have a conversation with Mary Anne, all the while thinking about Ginger during her replies.

Oh and the professor(RIP), was the Max Factor/ Sephora, of the island.

In real life she did also. From what I have read Mary Ann was her caregiver in Natalie Schaffer(Mrs Howell) in her later years & ginger was left a great deal of money in Natalie's will.

Maryanne, of course! Ginger on special occasions.

The actor who played the Professor, Russell Johnson was often asked why the professor, a guy who could make radios out of coconuts, couldn't patch the hole in the boat.

His response was that he was the the most attractive man on the island with Ginger and Maryanne and he'd be a fool to be in a hurry to leave!

I remember watching Gilligan's Island a short time after seeing a truncated version of 'Some Like It Hot' on the afternoon movie when I was a kid. So I associated Ginger with Marilyn. It was back when I had first 'discovered' that I was supposed to be a girl, and I had watched Marilyn very closely to pick up tips on how to behave. So, for me, it was all about Ginger, always trying to be the prettiest girl as possible.
