Any published story goes through editorial, they highlight certain parts, dwell on some aspects of the story, remove others, and so on. Why shouldn't you have the same latitude? Don't want to include parts of your life? Just leave them out.

I guess it depends on how factual you want your story to be. Is that part of your story essential to the telling of the story of "thechick"? Something else to think of, are you ready for the spotlight? Can you handle the questions, good or bad that will come your way?

From a pure prose point of view, does the episode you describe contribute to the narrative of your life, especially as it is now. If it was a long time ago and was to an extent no more than "another job" to pay the bills then I would suggest it deserves no more mention than say that Barack Obama may have worked in a Mcdonalds growing up. IF however it contributes dramatically to the narrative, e.g. you met someone through that work who became a lifelong role model, or perhaps worse you had a friend through that work who's health was significantly impacted and this caused a major shift in your attitude and progression of your life, then perhaps you would consider putting it in.
To be genuinely frank I think most biography's and autobiographies are excessively tedious because of too much detail on facts and events and not enough exploration of feelings and motives.

I think that you should do it, and just leave out a couple of details if you don't feel comfortable about it

You have said that "a publisher" has asked if you want to but you have not gone into any detail about what they publish. Look up the type of publications they produce, are they the sort you want to be associated with? Will you have any control over the published article? As you have said, "I will think about it", do so, very seriously, its your life that will be "up there in lights"

I would simply ask yourself if you think telling your whole story can help someone else. To me that's the point. Is there someone out there right now doing things they don't want to to survive that may come across your story and find a way to change things? If so, then it's worth it in my opinion. I know for me growing up in the dark about any kind of gender variance precluded me from developing as a person and I would do whatever I could to help someone else not to suffer through life like I did.

My advice is you should go to a bookstore and find a book called 'The Writer's Market' and look for this publisher inside. The Writer's Market lists all the reputable publishers and where they fit into the market. If they are a fly-by-night deal or have burned other writers then they are removed from the list. As far as writing it... you will bring some unwanted attention to yourself but the more of us that can be visible and tell our stories the more informed the general public will be about what transgenderism is. That part in your past you may not want to share could be omitted but if it had a profound impact on your life or could be used as a point then you would not be doing your story justice... Maybe focus on why you in that situation instead of the situation itself. Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide and keep us posted :)
