View Full Version : Going Job Hunting

I'm taking the day off to apply for a job at several locales. I am working, but it's time for a change...
A couple years ago, I went to a Halloween party en femme. I was urged on by a coworker, who was one of several coworkers at this party. The next week we were BS'ing in the shop about the party, and our supervisor mentioned someone in the community that was a cd, and let his feelings be known. He's not a supporter, to say the least.
The plant manager is a Texas raised Southern Baptist, and his feelings toward the LGBT community are no secret.
Iowa has plenty of legal protections for transpersons, but I don't want to force this issue down the management's throat. A couple of my fellow employees suspect that I'm on the path and I'm sure they would suport me, however, they aren't the ones in charge. I'm sure some would call me confrontational (my older sister, to be sure),
but I'd rather avoid the fight.
That's the biggie, the fact that I really dislike my job is another factor. I'm ready for a change, need a change, and if I can change to another town, that would be even better. Smallville isn't the place for a supertranny!
Hugs,
Leah

Iowa is mostly made up of Smallvilles. I wish you luck in your job search and possible relocation.

The social transition is the difficult part. Once you get into full time, at a new job, new whatever, it is not so bad.
There will always be those who oppose TG but it is easier to find people who support or do not care once out and full time.

Good Luck, Leah. I hope you find a employer, that is a great fit. Keep me in the loop.
Given the choice between a friendly and supportive employer and a hostile employer who feels forced to employ you the choice is obvious. You'll have a more pleasant time and be a more productive worker for the supportive employer.
A smart employer will know this too. Being receptive to a employee's needs creates loyalty.
If you have to move to find the best job so be it. Most people have to move even if they are not TS!

Good Luck Leah, I hope you find a job that's a great fit for you!
I can completely relate to not liking your job, it's been a very long time since I've gotten any sense of personal accomplishment/growth/satisfaction/whatever from my job too. It's not a great feeling. I get the feeling that when I do come out at work it's not going to be received with open arms. I hope I'm wrong, but like you I get the daily commentary from management and co-workers regarding their feelings towards anyone anywhere in the LGBT spectrum. Let's just say it's not pretty.... Regardless of their feelings, I'm here and my day will come sooner or later. How it works out no one can know until it does. I'm pretty much to the point where I really could care less what anyone thinks anyway..... We'll see...

There are many things to consider when looking for a job, and those reasons are yours and yours alone. If avoiding the fight is important to you then that's as good a consideration as any, and you have my support.
But you are not forcing anything down anyone's throat by simply being who you are. If they gag on it then that's their problem. If there are legal protections in place this is the law, and Mr Intolerant needs to man up and deal with that. Coddling him only enables him to be a law-breaker.

Yesterday the weather was great, except for a bit of wind, so I rode the bike down to Des Moines. I filled out a couple apps, one person seemed impressed that I was friendly and "affable". It's driving a truck yet, but a much smaller truck and making deliveries around the state. And pays more than I'm getting now. Hopefully...
Felt good about that, so stopped by my favorite spot for a quick cold one. An acquaintance was there, and he didn't recognize me in drab. Great disguise...
Hugs,
Leah
