YES! Kaitlyn has it right in her post regarding this journey really being a medical treatment. I do not want to hijack her thread, but i feel a need to talk about beginning my medical journey.
This really is a medical condition that requires a series of medical treatments. Like any serious medical condition, therapy is often part of the total treatment to be able to accept the condition, and the treatments required to get the condition under control. Until our medical community begins to also accept this view, our GD will continue to be thought of as a mental condition, and treated inappropriately, or not at all, as is now done in my town at Carle Clinic, Urbana, IL.
So...tomorrow I will stand in front of a Doctor at the Howard Brown Health Clinic in Chicago, for the first time as a woman, at least as much woman as I am. HBHC treats this as a medical condition. I need to do this to move my treatment from the current back alley approach to the light of medical propriety. The first step, hormones, are medically administered and termed something like Endocrine Deficiency Modification (not sure of exact wording) in all reports.
I will do whatever the Dr. asks to begin my series of medical treatments. I have no idea how many procedures i will require/be able to receive in what remains of my life with the family situation I so desire to also maintain, but I now realize it really is just a medical condition. Once this condition is on my records, i will let my GP know my full medical history, and we will begin to see what happens.
So, yes, this is really a medical problem requiring medical procedures to begin and i will nervously begin mine as a woman in hope of getting as close to that peaceful point.
Hugs to all
Barbara
