YES! Kaitlyn has it right in her post regarding this journey really being a medical treatment. I do not want to hijack her thread, but i feel a need to talk about beginning my medical journey.

This really is a medical condition that requires a series of medical treatments. Like any serious medical condition, therapy is often part of the total treatment to be able to accept the condition, and the treatments required to get the condition under control. Until our medical community begins to also accept this view, our GD will continue to be thought of as a mental condition, and treated inappropriately, or not at all, as is now done in my town at Carle Clinic, Urbana, IL.

So...tomorrow I will stand in front of a Doctor at the Howard Brown Health Clinic in Chicago, for the first time as a woman, at least as much woman as I am. HBHC treats this as a medical condition. I need to do this to move my treatment from the current back alley approach to the light of medical propriety. The first step, hormones, are medically administered and termed something like Endocrine Deficiency Modification (not sure of exact wording) in all reports.

I will do whatever the Dr. asks to begin my series of medical treatments. I have no idea how many procedures i will require/be able to receive in what remains of my life with the family situation I so desire to also maintain, but I now realize it really is just a medical condition. Once this condition is on my records, i will let my GP know my full medical history, and we will begin to see what happens.

So, yes, this is really a medical problem requiring medical procedures to begin and i will nervously begin mine as a woman in hope of getting as close to that peaceful point.

Hugs to all

Barbara

Hi Barbara Ella - I remember talking to you too about this last year. My, you've come a long way, hon! I'm so happy that you are going to be getting treatment for what is, after all, a horrible misunderstood and misdiagnosed medical condition. All I can tell you is that it gets better.

I treated this as a medical treatment from the beginning.

I'm so happy you are going to HBHC. I've heard nothing but glowing reports about the clinic. Their idea of classifying HRT as an "Endocrine Deficiency Modification" has allowed many trans-women to receive reimbursement when their insurance companies otherwise refuse to provide coverage. Please keep us posted on your journey.

I had many emotional wounds from childhood largely caused by being cut off from my natural gender identity and forced to adopt another.

Mainly severe social anxiety and PTSD which as they regressed into the background through therapy the original reason for the anxiety and PTSD emerged which was the gender dysphoria expressed and experienced as dissociative identity disorder and repressed/denied gender identity.

Therapy saved my life so I have a very positive opinion of it and all of my previous therapy faciliatated therapy related exclusively to my gender identity.

It is only a medical issue "unless" you are suffering emotionally and mentally which from my experience is true for a large percentage of transsexuals.

I'm personally a strong advocate for therapy.

The need for therapy related to gender identity is long gone but now I'm finding having a good therapist who is also a woman very helpful, almost like a mentor and guide.

In my opinion it is really important to find someone to lean on to make up for all that guidance from women you would have received but did'nt.

I consider therapy to be part of the medical treatment.
