From my 9 year old...
So did you know there are levels of being a girl?
Oh yeah?
Yes. There are girly girls, girls, and tomboys.
So let me guess, you are a girly girl.
Right.
And what about your sister?
She's just a girl. She doesn't like to wear dresses.
But she likes to wear skirts.
Yes, that's why she isn't a tomboy.
Who knew!!! :)
And a later on, her 11 year old sister makes an observation while looking at her grandfather's workbench and tools.
So boys just collect tools like girls buy makeup and stuff?
I guess that's one way of looking at it.
And this bench, it's kind of like a vanity, huh?
Yep.
(Who am I to argue with that logic!)

Interesting comment on there being levels of femininity.
My two daughters have never mentioned anything like this but they are a different as night and day.
The oldest is an adrenalin junky who wears feminine clothes. This one would be the "girly girl".
The other prefers jeans along with hunting and fishing. She claims she isn't a "tomboy" because she does wear skirts and dresses so I guess she'd be the plain girl!

A girl is a girl, is a girl.
Boys are the same.
Put them in a pot together, and they breed like bloody rabbits.
That's what makes the world go round.
Girls I luv 'em. :)
You have to be nine years old to explain the meaning of life.

Life through the eyes of the innocent. I wish we could carry that through into adult life sometimes.
Did make me laugh though, but I'll never look at a workbench in the same light.

And we can have threads here with hundreds of posts trying to figure that out.

I had long hair through the 80s and carried a bag for all my stuff, and i wore eye makeup. The neighborhood kids (mostly the girls) would ask me when I'd go out to get in my car if I was a boy or a girl. The answer was, what do you think?

Blue Orchid:
Art Linkletter on one of his shows had boys compete at dressing as a girl.
So I went into the bathroom and put on my Aunt's clothes using a watch.
Then I said to myself who am I kidding
Still wearing women's clothes.

That's funny cause all three of my daughters were big Tom Boys, always trying to do things my son did. They turned into great moms and to this day very much Tom ( soccer) moms and I have eight grand sons by them. Maybe there is some truth to the words of a child.

Who says a girly girl can't hunt or fish? My youngest, the self-described girly girl, LOVES to fish.

Kids always seem to know how to be honest. I love her explanation about her concept femininity. More the reason why to be female. CHOISES that males don't have.

Neat story for sure. My sister will tell my 5 year old niece, "you're such a girl". This thread leads me to ask the next question, what are the levels of being a boy? Are they as acceptable or accessible for males?

I've actually talked to a 20 something women who described herself as "not a girly girl". She said she can't walk in heels, and she would prefer to wear sweats, even though she was already wearing scrubs. In case you haven't figured it out, she is one of my nurses.

It's a bit more complicated than your three levels. First, you forgot the butch. Second there are different dimensions of girliness too, and they aren't always in alignment.
Examples:
A girly girl who likes to go hunting and fishing.
A butch lesbian who is the bottom in a relationship.
A femme lesbian who is the top in a relationship.
A girl that likes wearing skirts but also likes to play baseball.
A girl that loves wearing dresses but hates makeup.
A girl that loves wearing makeup but wears exclusively jeans.
A girl that wears skirts with flats.
A girl that wears jeans with heels.
A girly girl that is a computer programmer.
The tomboyish hairdresser/cosmetologist girl that never wears a skirt or dress, and likes makeup and football.
The bossy lady that always wears skirts, dresses, heels, and lots of makeup.
The quiet, polite girl that wears jeans and sneakers.
The girly girl who wears jeans and sneakers along with lots of makeup.
A butch lesbian that happens to be a graphic designer (and is quite bossy too).
Can a girl be part tomboy, part girly girl?
Oh, I forgot, the girl who is both logical and emotional?
And while we're at it the girl who is neither logical nor emotional.
I can add to the list ad infinitem.
Oh, and finally, what constitutes a girly girl, a girl, a tomboy, and a butch?
