I am diabetic, and I have significant amounts of neuropathy in both legs,
and into the groin area. At the end of last July, I stepped on a tack, and did
not feel it. I noticed it the next day, pulled it out (again not feeling it), and
went to work. By the end of the day, it was a bit sore. That was Monday.

On Tuesday, I was laid up in bed fighting the infection. The next day, I did
not go to work because I could barely walk. But Thursday, Friday, and Saturday,
I went to work as normal, despite my supervisors saying I should really have
the foot looked at ...

On Sunday (seven days since I stepped on the tack) ... my room-mates and I
were eating at a Chinese restaurant near the hospital, and so I told my room-mates
to drop me off there, they could go do their stuff and pick me up on the way back,
thinking this would be a couple hours ...

NOPE!

The doctors did a lot more testing than I thought necessary at the time, and
I was informed that not only was my foot infected, but I probably had a
system-wide blood infection. "So, I am going to be here a while," I said. The
doctors nodded, saying I was going to have to be admitted. At some point in that
process, I called my room-mates and told them. I had them get two or three changes
of clothes, which included underwear. That was how my room-mates discovered that
I cross-dress.

ouch! And big OUCH!
Unplanned outings are not what I like.
Then again, take care you your health--that is what is really important.

One of my room-mates works where I do, so she sees me in
female attire. (She started working there after the hospital thing...)

The other room-mate is the husband of the first, and he has made
it clear that he does not approve. So, under the idea of not wanting
to cause stress in the home, at home is generally when I am in my
male mode.

You should check your feet every day, being diabetic and having neuropathy. I do as well.

My dad died from MRSA, after getting a tiny cut on his toe and not looking after his feet.

I'm so sorry about your hospitalization. And I'm sorry your friends had to find out about your CDing this way. I'm also curious about how they reacted?

Amyjacks:
I also have neuropathy as well as being diabetic.
I can understand your condition. It is a wonder you did not get Gangrene.
Lets hope and pray the doctors can fix you up in a short time.
My wife had a diabetic ulcer on her foot; It took almost a year to fix that one,
she had to wear a special boot to keep her foot steady.
Good luck and speedy recovery.

Robyn, I was surprised that they brought me female underwear. They really
had no choice, as the male clothing is largely in deep storage far in the
closet. After the hospital stay, which was four days, on the ride home, I
brought up the subject by saying: "I guess we need to talk about a couple
things," and my friend replied with: "We know about it." Sometime later, he
said he was sorta okay with it, provided I didn't "advertise" it ... whatever
that means.

RADER, I was STOOPID about dealing with that injury, and ever since,
I have tried to be more careful. I was basically playing with my life, as
I had a blood infection. I am lucky to still have a left foot, and it is in
relatively good shape. I am working on keeping the skin in as good a
shape as I can, and I try to avoid what I can. However, the injury was
from back last August or so. :)

Thanks for the best wishes though!

Amy, I have type ii diabetes for over two years now. It's pretty much under control with insulin pens. As Donna said, I check my feet and other extremities every day to check for feelings. So far, so good with no neuropathy. Hopefully it stays that way. Any time you want to talk about anything feel free my friend.:)

Look at the bright side, I am assuming you still have your feet, which is more important than anything including being outed. Add extra points for having eye sight, functioning kidneys etc. Check those blood sugars, feet, and limit the carbs. Word!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy,
I hope the eventual outcome is positive.

I have to join the chorus of those with type II diabetes. I was not diagnosed for more than 15 years, which resulted in acquiring peripheral and autonomic neuropathy. I am able to control my glucose with diet and exercise, although the neuropathy is not going to go away.

Before posting I checked the "About Me" tabs in your profiles to see the ages. I know some of you are old enough to have been in the US military and served in Vietnam and were exposed to agent orange. If you are a vet who served in Vietnam, look into being classified as a service connected disabled.
