Well, I had one of those life moments a month ago in early July, one of those incidents where I ask isn't it better to just face the muse? Here I am having a delightful late morning dress up and "selfie" photo session outside our kitchen door while hearing a lot of racket next door. I new the neighbor's car was gone but assumed one was still at home and didn't know they were on vacation, until a couple days ago, so didn't bother to investigate. Too bad as it were, a shame sometimes to have to be so selfishly closeted, especially if someone's life or property is at stake. Next time I told the neighbors to let me know when they are on vacation- as if there's another emergency, got to confront the situation. (just a written reminder to self and others who might get into a similar predicament.

You probably wouldn't have investigated even if you weren't en femme, so don't beat yourself up too much.

If the neighbors had told you they were away on vacation and to watch the place you could have telephoned the police. My neighbor tells me when they are away and to watch the place. The house next door is a rental. After I introduce myself and my wife I always notice and ask them what cars belong to the house, occupant or visitors. Recently a different neighbor in another house had a burglary. He even had a monitoring firm. The thieves were in and out before the cops could respond. He has added me to his telephone list, so, if there is another break-in while in is long hauling at least I can start taking pictures.

You're not at fault, whether en femme or not. There is no sense of risking your health and well being for material items. But, had you know, you could have called 911.

Just be glad they weren't in your house! Like others have said, they should have given you the heads up they were out of town and to call the cops. Don't confront criminals no matter how you are dressed!

Alarms do virtually nothing for burglaries since as you note they were in and out before the cops had a chance. Most cities police have slow arrival times anyway and alarms have poor reputation for 'false alarms.' They are better for CO2 and gas in the house which do not require the cops come.

I agree with calling the local constabulary and not confronting the miscreants. They know how to deal with these individuals without undue risk to anyone.

At this point, chances are good they won't be caught unless fingerprints or other identifying clues are found. If any jewelry was taken, chances are good it has been melted down by now.

Don't fret about it, although it is frustrating to have missed out on seeing the perpetrators.
Next time maybe the neighbors will ask you to look out for them.

Sad, but it doesn't matter where you live now days, the grab and snatch thieves are everywhere. You can even be at home and they will hit. I just hope I have on a cute outfit when the police come to recover the body.
