I have thinning hair, you know, typical male pattern sunburn and age related thinning. It's not thick enough to work into a convincing woman's hairstyle, but I play with it none the less. However I've been letting it grow out and it's frizzy, curly, down to my shoulders now. Although I'll dress at home and leave the wig off, that's as far as it goes, and although I have photos, they stay hidden because I really do look ridiculous without a wig. So when I'm going to go out, even to support groups I pull it back, bundle it up and hide it under a wig. There is no question about it, a wig makes me look much better, younger and even closer to semi-blendable. None of that would be the case with my natural hair. So here is the question, why should I continue to grow my hair out? It takes time to fuss with and clean and I almost always keep it pulled back in a pony tail when I'm in guy mode. Maybe I'm just channeling my inner hippie or something, but it's just something I wonder about.

Do any of you with this kind of hair continue to grow it out? Why?

My hair does the same thing when I try to grow it out. Finally gave up and buzz cut it. Lot less hassle.

I have grown my hair out long and it is thinning a bit. So I use hair extensions similar to this one: http://www.sallybeauty.com/hair-bang-accent/DESNLT17,default,pd.html#start=6

It looks pretty good and is a lot more comfortable than a wig. Genetic women also sometimes cheat and add some artificial volume. :)

Mine is not thick anymore so I have founf a wig is the only way to go.
When I as young I was a long haired blond for a while.

I would say no sense in it unless you like it in male mode. But if a wig works a lot better for your look then I think you already have the answer.

I have hardly any hair. What I've got, I keep closely clipped to keep it from showing when I wear a wig.

I've always had fine hair and have grown it to the bottom of my shoulder blades; it stops beyond that, mostly due to breakage. The only gray I have is at the temples, so I have short sideburns, which isn't bad for someone who is pushing 70. I have found that an extra body hair conditioner combined with a styling gel work wonders as to giving me some loft, so you may want to try that before giving up on it.

There are advantages to having natural hair. It looks natural and it won't move or fall off.

The main advantage of a wig is, you can have short brown or grey hair as a guy and longer blonde hair as a female. This helps as a disguise if that's something that concerns you.

I started growing my hair out but as you point out, it's a pain to take care of. Also, folks might think it strange that at my age I would decide to have long hair. Long hair on old guys looks a bit strange.
