View Full Version : Another Beautiful Day

So this morning started like any other. I arrive 15 minutes early to work, get clocked in, grab my iPad and head out to the sales floor. Slow gray morning.

About an hour and a half in, a gentleman in maybe his 80's comes in with his son. His son is going over in his data and needs help with email. I start working with the phone and helping them. A minute or so later, the sales rep freed up and came over (A GG). As she and I are helping the customers, the father says, "They don't give you LADIES chairs to sit in?" We explained that we had no problem standing but if he needed a chair, we could go get him one. He declined. I started talking to the son about how by getting hundreds of emails per day, it was eating up his data plan. The son is in his own little world talking over me to the sales rep. The father says, "Son, this woman is trying to explain this to you, listen up!" He turned to me and started paying attention. I'm giddy by this point! After explaining everything, the dad wanted to get a tablet and new phone so I bowed out and let the rep do her job...
This story continues later on...:D

Several hours later, I'm working in the back office doing paperwork when our Dunbar guy comes to collect the store deposit. This is the first time he has seen me since I went full time. As he's checking the paperwork, he notices a mess up. While talking to the other back office rep, he jokingly says.. "I blame Adam!" I turned around from my desk and jokingly said, "Adam doesn't work here anymore!" He got this serious look on his face and said, "What happened?? You don't work here anymore??" I just grinned really big and said, "I still work here, but Adam is gone." Then it clicked. He holds out his hand and introduces himself in all seriousness and says, "It is a pleasure to meet you Aly!" He then asked how I was feeling about everything and I explained how well things were going. As he left, he nodded his head and said, "You ladies have a wonderful day!"

Back to first story!
In the late afternoon, the father came back to pick up his phone because he had to leave early for a doctors appointment. The rep he was working with was busy so I grabbed his new equipment and showed him how to use it. He then asked if I would kindly pair his phone to his car. Typically I don't do this sort of thing because of safety reasons, but I couldn't see an 80+ year old man overpowering me. As I'm sitting in the drivers seat pairing his phone up, he says, "It amazes me how much you young girls know about all this." I just smile to myself and continue working. After finishing, I step out of the drivers side and he is standing there. He then takes my hand with both of his and shakes it saying, "Please allow me to buy you girls some lunch. You have been so helpful." I declined saying that we couldn't accept gifts but thanked him for the offer. When he let go of my hands, I found a $20 in my palm. Sneaky man! I tried to give it back and he just smiles and proceeds to get in his car. I thanked him and walked back inside.

:daydreaming: Such a wonderful day! :daydreaming:

I couldn't decipher your name badge, but then I realized you took the picture in a mirror.
You look great.

Hahaha Jorja! I'm innocent I swear! Its just my cute look and stunning personality! J/k j/k. He was just a very kind person.

Yeah, for whatever reason, if I take a picture for Facebook messenger, it doesn't correct the mirror effect. It's kind of strange. I noticed that too when I originally sent the picture to a friend.

How wonderfully affirming Aly. Sometimes it's the older generation, whom you might expect to be more conservative and / or more critical, who un-self consciously "do the right thing". I had a similar experience of tremendous courtesy, from a reasonably elderly ex-army type, the second time that I was out & about fully dressed up. He wasn't so elderly as to not 'make' me but he behaved as if I was indeed a young woman - even hold open the carriage door of the train for me. I was so nervous that all I could do was smile and mumble

Sweet experience Aly - and a tip to boot! :cheer:

I think there's a lesson there for all of us about how being gracious and pleasant to folk that go out of their way to help just makes everyone's life better... like the 'Pay it forward' thing...

Great story, Aly! Thank you for sharing that. I think the best part was the Dunbar employee's acceptance and concern for you. :)

It's really nice to see those who interact with you treating you with professional courtesy. I'm sure the elderly man has seen much during his life; the good, the bad, and the ugly. When you start to "age out" in this world, you begin to realize what matters most. I think Judith (above #17) experience what I am saying.

I try to share my stories on here because if I do nothing else for anyone, I want to have given you ladies some courage to step out and be uniquely you. We all have good and bad experiences, but regardless of the experience, if you aren't being true to yourself, then you're living a lie. And that's no way to live. Be encouraged and always live your life for you! Love you wonderful bunch of ladies!

Aly, it's so nice to hear your story about a genuinely nice man. The fact that he was nice is only part of the story, the other part is that you were diligent in giving superior customer service. So many businesses do not appreciate the value of good customer service and do business in what I like to call the "supermarket" style. In that style you pick what you think you want/need and go pay for it, if you didn't get what best suits your needs, that tough!!

I'm glad you had a good day!

Hugs, Bria
